Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Thirty years ago,  today, February 13, 1983, the shooting and killing of U.S. Marshal Kenneth Muir and Deputy Marshal Bob Cheshire in Medina, ND, set off a nationwide manhunt for fugitive Gordon Kahl.

Nearly a hundred U.S. Marshals and FBI agents headquartered out of the former Post Office building in downtown Jamestown, ND, as they searched for Kahl and Scott Faul.

The tragic event spawned books, movies, TV movies, and countless news stories by local, state, and national news media.

In 1983, CSi TV photographer Kent Katterjohn and reporter Christine Sheppard interviewed law enforcement officials from the FBI and U.S. Marshal Service, and joined the media group as the search went to Medina with comments to the media by Dr. Clarence Martin.  Some of the CSi video was used by CBS and ABC  in national stories.

The Replay Channel is editing the several hours of 1983 video, some of which has never been aired,  into a look back at the event,  from after the shooting to the point the search left ND for Arkansas.   The project will premiere on The Replay Channel, CSi TV 10 at a date to be announced.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – United Blood Services of the Dakotas is urging people to donate blood in the wake of the weekend blizzard in the region to ensure a stable blood supply.

The organization says the storm forced the cancellation of several blood drives, and few donors were able to venture out Monday in the aftermath of the blizzard.

United Blood Services of the Dakotas has North Dakota offices in Bismarck, Fargo and Minot, and South Dakota offices in Aberdeen, Mitchell and Rapid City.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Officials say North Dakota’s economy remains strong but appears to be entering a stage where growth is stabilizing.

State Budget Director Pam Sharp and an executive with Moody’s Analytics told lawmakers on Tuesday that revenue during the current two-year budget cycle is now expected to be about $41 million more than the forecast released late last year. But in the next two years, revenue is now expected to be about $45 million less than the earlier forecast.

Officials say a big reason is fewer oil drilling rigs in the western oil patch.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state is still in strong fiscal shape.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Republican members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say the approach to the nation’s debt problem that President Barack Obama outlined in his State of the Union address won’t get the job done.

Sen. John Hoeven says in a statement that more taxes, more spending and more regulation won’t work. Rep. Kevin Cramer says he doesn’t think Obama recognizes the extent of the debt crisis and out-of-control spending.

Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says in a videotaped response that she hopes Obama’s speech Tuesday night is “the beginning of a dialogue” and that bipartisanship will prevail.

WESTHOPE, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has been charged with killing another man with a rifle.

48-year-old Timothy Carl Mundt has been charged in the shooting death of 40-year-old Jessie Kirk in Westhope earlier this month.

Mundt is being held at the Bottineau County Sheriff’s Department. His bond has been set at $500,000 cash or corporate surety.

Authorities have withheld the circumstances surrounding the killing.

A preliminary hearing in the case has not yet been set.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) – A New Salem woman has pleaded not guilty to child abuse or neglect related to the broken arm of an infant.

36-year-old Kyann McLaughlin pleaded not guilty to the felony at the Morton County Courthouse on Tuesday. She also waived a preliminary hearing.

Authorities say McLaughlin broke the arm of a 7-month-old girl in December at her in-home day care. McLaughlin called the girl’s mother and told her she thought the girl’s shoulder was dislocated when McLaughlin picked her up after a diaper change. But doctors said the girl’s arm was broken. They said the only explanation was that the arm was pulled forcefully and twisted.

McLaughlin’s next court hearing is scheduled for March 18.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison on a federal drug charge in North Dakota.

Tomas Dieguez pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Authorities say Dieguez and Arnaldo Guerrero sold meth in the Fargo area in July.

Prosecutors asked that Dieguez be sentenced to 12 years in prison. Defense attorney Jesse Lange argued for a term of not more than nine years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple sees no need for a new governor’s mansion but some lawmakers want to build him one.

The North Dakota House is slated to vote on a measure Wednesday that would authorize the construction of a new governor’s residence on the state Capitol grounds, along with a so-called executive conference center. The measure would authorize $3 million for the new dwelling and allow another $3 million from “private donations or other sources.”

Dalrymple spokesman Jeff Zent says the governor believes the current Governor’s Residence is fine.  The residence was completed in 1960 and is an example of prairie style architecture.

A major renovation was completed in 2000.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A state Senate committee has given a do not pass recommendation to a measure aimed at curbing the oil industry’s practice of wasting natural gas.

A vote before the full Senate is slated Wednesday.

Natural gas is a byproduct of oil production and companies can burn off or “flare” natural gas for a year without paying taxes or royalties on it. Companies can then ask state regulators for an extension because of the high costs of moving the gas to market.

Sen. Tim Mathern introduced the measure and says the amount of natural gas burned off each day in North Dakota’s oil patch could heat more than 500,000 homes.

Opponents of the measure say companies have invested $4 billion to move the gas to market.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The largest man camp operator in North Dakota’s oil patch is selling its properties to a multinational company for $625 million.

The  sale of Target Logistics’ Bakken properties to Algeco Scotsman is expected to close at the end of the month. Algeco Scotsman owns modular worker housing and storage facilities in several countries.

Target Logistics operates man camps in Tioga, Williston, Watford City and Dunn County. More than 3,400 workers are housed in the facilities.

Target Logistics’ spokesman Randy Pruett says there won’t be any immediate changes for the company because of the purchase.

Pruett says Target Logistics’ name and logo will remain intact. A tag mentioning Algeco Scotsman will be added.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An Iowa boxer has been suspended indefinitely in North Dakota after allegedly taking a dive while boxing a former Minnesota Vikings football player in West Fargo.

Combative Sports Commissioner Al Jaeger says a video review of the fight between Nicholas Capes and a much larger Ray Edwards clearly shows Capes was not hit before he dropped to the canvas. Officials are continuing to investigate.

Event promoter Cory Rapacz says Capes was a last-minute replacement for a couple of no-show boxers and didn’t realize what he was getting into before he got into the ring with Edwards, a former Vikings defensive end. He says officials expected Capes to try but says the backlash against Capes is unfair.

In world and national news…

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) – The San Bernardino County sheriff’s office say it’ll use forensics to confirm it, but it believes that a charred body found inside a cabin in the Southern California mountains is that of fugitive Christopher Dorner. The search for the former Los Angeles police officer ended yesterday when a man believed to be Dorner bolted from hiding, stole two cars, then barricaded himself in a vacant cabin and engaged in a shootout in which he killed one sheriff’s deputy and wounded another before the building erupted in flames.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is asking Congress to focus on attracting jobs to the U.S., training American workers and boosting investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and clean energy. In his State of the Union last night, Obama also said he wants to raise the minimum wage to $9 by the end of 2015. Today, he’s heading out on a three-day road trip to pitch his proposals. His first stop will be Asheville, N.C., where he’ll visit a manufacturing facility.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Republicans are dismissing President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address as nothing more than a call for big government spending and tax increases. But a quick sip of water may have gotten more immediate attention than policy positions. Sen. Marco Rubio stopped in the middle of delivering the GOP response to reach for a bottle of water. On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the Florida Republican says: “God has a funny way of reminding us we’re human.”

BRUSSELS (AP) – The European Union and the United States have agreed to pursue talks for a trans-Atlantic free trade deal. The 27-country EU says such an agreement would be the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated and could add 0.5 percent to the EU’s economic output. Trade officials say talks could start by summer.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) – Soaring prices for rhino horn in Asia are causing a sharp spike in poaching in South Africa. South African officials say at least 96 rhinos have been killed so far this year. That’s a dramatic increase from the 1990s to 2007, when poachers killed an average of 15 rhinos a year. There’s a belief in Asia that ground-up horn can cure diseases even though there’s no medical evidence to back up the theory.
