For more information call Dana at SAFE Shelter at 701-251-2300, Monday through Friday between 9-a.m., and 5-p.m.

About SAFE Shelter…

Safe Shelter is committed to empowering victims of physical, emotional, and sexual assault by offering information which will allow them to choose their own course of action and by supporting them as they act on those choices.

We are further committed to educating the public on the issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault so that, together, we may challenge societal attitudes which condone the use of violence as a means of maintaining power and control over another person.

We serve our community by offering a 24-hour crisis hotline, temporary emergency shelter, crisis intervention, follow-up services, information and referral services, peer support groups, therapeutic support groups, emergency financial assistance, an extensive court advocacy program, a children’s advocacy program, and prevention and education programs for high school and college students.  All of our services are provided free of charge.

Safe Shelter Volunteers are a necessary and invaluable key to our operations. They are primarily responsible for staffing the 24-hour crisis hotline during non-business hours. They go through approximately 30 hours of training in which they will receive valuable knowledge and information that will prepare them for volunteer advocacy.  Members of Safe Shelter staff will work with each trainee to make sure they feel comfortable, knowledgeable and ready to volunteer at the end of the training session.  We ask all volunteers to commit to one shift per month for at least one year.

You can make a difference one life at a time.  Together we can offer hope to people suffering with Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Sexual Violence.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have identified an 87-year-old Williston man killed in a crash in Williams County.

The Highway Patrol says the sport utility vehicle driven by Robert Barkie collided with a semitrailer at a U.S. Highway 2 intersection north of Williston midday Wednesday.

Barkie was declared dead at a Williston hospital. The semi driver from Georgia wasn’t injured.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A federal court jury in Fargo has convicted a Minnesota man in a drug-related homicide at a Grand Forks truck stop last year.

Thirty-five-year-old Modesto Torrez, of Angus, Minnesota, was found guilty Thursday of several charges including drug counts and murder in furtherance of a drug trafficking conspiracy, after a five-day trial. He’s to be sentenced Dec. 1.

Torrez was accused of ordering a hit on 24-year-old Austin Forsman in March 2016. The woman accused of killing Forsman, Krystal Feist, pleaded guilty in February.

U.S. Attorney Chris Myers says Torrez also led a conspiracy to traffic meth in the area. Thirteen people were indicted in connection with the ring.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — No one was seriously hurt when a motorist hit a pedestrian and then crashed into a business in Grand Forks.

Police say the driver’s foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas pedal about 8 p.m. Thursday outside a Little Caesar’s restaurant.

The car went over a curb, hit a 17-year-old bystander and then struck the building. The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment of what authorities say was a minor injury.

The driver was cited for care required.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — An historic former school in Mandan is being transformed into affordable housing.

The building through its history has served as the city’s high school, its junior high, an elementary school and a sixth-grade academy. It closed in 2009, and earlier this year was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Commonwealth Companies, of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, finalized its purchase of the property in late September. The building is now undergoing asbestos abatements and interior demolition.

The $6.2 million project will create 39 units of affordable housing known as Historic Apartments on 4th. Mandan’s Business Development Director Ellen Huber says renovation should be in full swing after Thanksgiving.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Microsoft says it will team up with communities in North Dakota, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Wyoming and Washington state in a program broadly aimed at fostering economic growth in rural and smaller metropolitan areas.

Company president Brad Smith launched the TechSpark program Thursday in Fargo, a metropolitan area of more than 200,000 people that includes a Microsoft campus with about 1,500 employees. Smith says the six communities are different by design and not all have a Microsoft presence.

Smith says TechSpark is a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment meant to help teach computer science to students, expand rural broadband and create and fill jobs. North Dakota currently has more than 13,000 job openings.

The company has also selected Appleton, Wisconsin as one of the sites. The other communities will be announced later.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Farm Rescue farm aid nonprofit in the Plains has reached another milestone.

The organization this week is delivering donated hay to south central North Dakota rancher Doug Bichler. He lost his right arm in a hay baling machine accident this past summer, while also dealing with devastating drought.

It’s the 500th case for Farm Rescue since it was started in 2005.

Farm Rescue provides free physical labor for farmers and ranchers in need in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Montana and Nebraska. Founder Bill Gross says he considers it an honor to have been able to help 500 farm families who have experienced crises.

Bichler is still recovering from his ordeal and says the assistance from Farm Rescue will help him keep his herd of cattle through the winter.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Federal legislation aimed at protecting Native American women and girls from violence, abduction and human trafficking is named for Savanna Greywind, the pregnant Fargo woman who was killed and whose baby was taken.

U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp introduced Savanna’s Act Thursday in Washington. The legislation would improve tribal access to certain federal crime information databases. Heitkamp says that access will help solve crimes and develop prevention strategies.

The bill would also create standardized protocols for responding to cases of missing and murdered Native Americans. And it would require an annual report to that would include statistics on missing and murdered Native American women.

Two of Greywind’s neighbors have been charged with conspiring to kill her and take her infant. They have pleaded not guilty.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has issued a proposal that would compensate power plants for keeping coal on hand and add value to North Dakota’s coal.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the proposal issued Friday to the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission would pay power plants for having 90 days’ worth of fuel on-site. The department says the proposed rule would make power plants more reliable and necessary to power production when renewables aren’t available.

Opponents of the proposal question how much on-site fuel improves a source’s reliability.

The coal industry in North Dakota competes mostly with wind energy. The state’s mines are located in the mouths of power plants, making the coal power generated in North Dakota more comparably priced to natural gas plants.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) became the ninth player in major league history to homer three times in a postseason game, leading an 8-2 rout of Boston in Game 1 of the AL Division Series. Altuve hit a pair of solo homers off Red Sox starter Chris Sale and added a third against reliever Austin Maddox. Alex Bregman also homered and Justin Verlander allowed two runs over six innings to improve to 7-0 since being acquired by Houston on Aug. 31.

HOUSTON — Red Sox designated hitter Eduardo Nunez will miss the rest of the AL Division Series against Houston after reinjuring his right knee in the first inning of Thursday’s loss to the Astros. Nunez missed 19 of the Red Sox’s last 20 regular-season games with a knee injury and was wearing a heavy brace when he pulled up running to first base on a groundout. MLB has allowed the Red Sox to replace Nunez with outfielder Chris Young on the series roster.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Trevor Bauer and Jay Bruce were the stars as the Cleveland Indians took the opener of their AL Division Series, 4-0 over the New York Yankees. Bauer carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and limited the Yanks to a pair of hits with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3s. Bruce smacked a two-run homer and hit a sacrifice fly after scoring the game’s first run on a double-play grounder.

In world and national news…

OSLO, Norway (AP) — In Japan, the only country to suffer an atomic bombing in the closing days of World War II, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize resonated with many. Sunao Tsuboi, a 92-year-old survivor of the Hiroshima bombing, said he was overjoyed to hear of the Nobel Peace award going to those who were also working toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. He says that “as long as I live, I hope to work toward a realization of a world without nuclear weapons with ICAN and many other people.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Australian officials say the girlfriend of the Las Vegas shooter is an Australian citizen who is entitled to consular assistance. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation says that Philippines-born Marilou Danley became an Australian citizen after marrying a local man, and lived in the country for 10 years until the late 1980s. Australian officials say they’re aware that Danley is a “person of interest” in the mass shooting.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — It was pure coincidence that the crew members on Engine 11 were the first on-duty emergency personnel to arrive at the site of the Las Vegas mass shooting Sunday night. Fire engineer Brian Emery said the surge of people forced him to stop the firetruck just a few blocks from the outdoor venue on which Stephen Paddock had unleashed gunfire. Over the next hours, the crew treated gunshot victims struck by high-caliber fire.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has delivered a foreboding message, telling reporters as he posed for photos with his senior military leaders that this might be “the calm before the storm.” When a reporter asked, “What storm?” Trump responded, “You’ll find out.” He also praised those assembled for the photo, saying, “We have the world’s great military people in this room, I will tell you that.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Traditional allies in support of gun rights are of one mind in calling for regulation of “bump stock” devices that apparently aided the gunman behind the Las Vegas attack. Usually the National Rifle Association opposes firearms restrictions. President Donald Trump has pledged to support gun rights. Yet after the deadly rampage at a country music festival in Las Vegas, the NRA and the Trump administration are endorsing additional regulations for the devices.
