Bismarck  (NDDOT)  Law enforcement agencies across North Dakota will run extra patrols in an effort to remove impaired drivers off the roads, as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign from March 1-31.

Jamestown Police Lieutenant Justin Blinsky says, “We want to use the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign period to remind drivers of how simple it is to always drive sober. It’s as easy as remaining sober, designating a sober ride in advance, or calling someone when you are impaired. It’s that easy to save a life, whether it’s your own or someone else’s.”

Preliminary data from 2017 in North Dakota reports 50 motor vehicle fatalities and 470 injuries due to an alcohol-related crash. This translates to one alcohol-related fatality every seven days in North Dakota. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 (19 percent) adult arrests in North Dakota are for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Karin Mongeon,  the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Safety Division Director, says, “With the newly launched statewide traffic safety initiative, Vision Zero – Zero fatalities. Zero excuses, we hope that this enforcement campaign will bring more awareness to the seriousness of a driver’s actions behind the wheel so we can reach that goal. The lives lost or those individuals who have been seriously injured due to an impaired driver is unacceptable and 100 percent preventable,” said

The NDDOT administers federal grant funding as part of an overall effort to prevent fatalities and injuries on North Dakota roads. Learn more at dot.nd.gov, visionzero.nd.gov, or join the conversation on the Vision Zero ND Facebook and Twitter page.

Carlson says larger districts, such as Fargo, have done a good job in improving security in school buildings, but smaller districts don’t have the money to make those improvements.

KFGO reports state Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says she’s been in talks with the Highway Patrol about offering office space in rural district schools where troopers could do their routine paperwork and interact with students and staff.

Valley City State is heading to the national tournament for the second straight season and the fifth time in program history – all of which have come since 2011. VCSU is 0-4 in its previous national tournament appearances. This year’s No. 4 seed is the highest seed in program history.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The latest staffer to leave the Trump White House is one of his most trusted aides, Hope Hicks. She’s the fourth director of communications to serve President Donald Trump.

No specific reason was given for Hicks’ departure, which isn’t expected for several weeks. While the announcement caught many of Hicks’ colleagues by surprise, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Hicks has been thinking about leaving for a while.

Word that the 29-year-old Hicks would leave the White came just a day after she spent nine hours answering questions from the House intelligence committee as it investigates Russian election meddling and any ties to the Trump campaign.

Hicks acknowledged to the panel that she has occasionally told “white lies” for Trump but not about anything relevant to the Russia investigation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Activist groups are turning to television ads — including on President Donald Trump’s go-to station, Fox News — to pressure the White House into allowing transgender people to keep serving in the military.

Trump has vowed to ban transgender troops from serving. He’ll be able to see the 30-second commercial on Friday, when it starts airing on Fox, CNN and MSNBC. It uses quotes from Trump, a former senior military leader and several Congress members who were in the armed forces to argue that all qualified Americans should be able to serve.

The issue has become mired in a complicated string of political statements, court decisions, and policy reviews since Trump first stunned his administration with tweets declaring that the government would ban transgender individuals from serving in the military.

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military is accusing Syria’s rebels of shelling a humanitarian corridor that Moscow set up with the Syrian government, offering residents of Damascus’ besieged eastern suburbs a way out of the embattled enclave.

Maj. Gen. Vladimir Zolotukhin told Russia news agencies on Thursday that the militants who control the suburbs — an area known as eastern Ghouta — are shelling the route, manned by Syrian and Russian forces, and preventing evacuations.

Syrian state news agency SANA said on Wednesday that some shells had landed near the corridor but reported no injuries.

The accusations come on the third and possibly last day of a Russia-ordered “humanitarian pause” in the fighting in the area, known as eastern Ghouta, but no civilians have used the lull to leave the rebel-held suburbs.

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin says Russia has tested new nuclear weapons, including a nuclear-powered cruise missile and a nuclear-powered underwater drone, that would be immune to enemy intercept.

Speaking in a state-of-the-nation speech Thursday, Putin said that the nuclear-powered cruise missile tested last fall has an unlimited range and high speed and is capable of penetrating any missile defense.

He said the high-speed underwater drone capable of carrying a nuclear warhead could target both aircraft carriers and coastal facilities.

Putin said that Russia also tested a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, called Sarmat, with a range and number of warheads exceeding its predecessor.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Encrypted messages. Two-factor authentication. Real-time monitoring of social media for malicious internet bot activity.

This is the new reality for candidates running in 2018, scared of email hacks and elaborate misinformation schemes like the ones Russia used to disrupt the 2016 campaign.

And many candidates say they’re concerned they can’t rely on Congress or the White House for advice, or protection.

Gareth Rhodes, a Democrat running for an upstate New York House seat, said this week he’s put his campaign staff through rigorous cybersecurity training. The national campaign committees supporting Democrats and Republicans for House and Senate have brought on special staffers to prevent hacks.

But special counsel Robert Mueller revealed a trickier problem for campaigns in his elaborate indictment of the Russian Internet Research Agency: Misinformation.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Polish law that criminalizes accusing the Polish nation of crimes that were committed by Nazi Germany has taken effect.

The law has sparked a crisis with Israel, where officials fear its true aim is to repress research on Poles who killed Jews during World War II, something Polish officials deny.

As the law took effect Thursday, Polish and Israel representatives were in Jerusalem holding a first working meeting toward resolving a standoff over the law.

Poland’s president signed the law last month but also sent it to the constitutional court for review. Polish officials have said no criminal charges will be brought until the court has made its ruling, expecting in several weeks.

But prosecutors are also already looking for cases where Poland is defamed over its wartime activities.
