FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police in Fargo have identified the victim of a homicide.

Police say 32-year-old Jarryd George Heis was found dead Friday inside a suspect’s apartment.

Police say they arrested the 29-year-old suspect after they said he called authorities to tell them he had assaulted the man who died.

Authorities say the Fargo man told an emergency dispatcher about 6:30 a.m. Friday that he was involved in an assault that resulted in a man’s death. Officers arrested the suspect at a gas station where he made the call.

Chief David Todd would not talk about what caused the man’s death or a possible weapon, but said it was the result of a physical altercation.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota student may not sing in competitions or even her school choir, but she’s known to publicly sing one song since she was 5 years old: “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Kennedy Harris sings the national anthem as a tribute to her country and her late grandfather, who died when she was 8 years old.

The Mandan High School junior tells the Bismarck Tribune her grandfather, a Vietnam War veteran, first asked Harris to sing for a crowd other than her family at one of his baseball games. Shortly after the game, then-5-year-old Harris performed at a Memorial Day program in Makoti, where she has sung for the community’s veterans and soldiers every year since.

She has sung the national anthem in public nearly 50 times.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Some Republican lawmakers have drafted legislation that would use part of North Dakota’s oil tax savings account to make low-interest loans to communities facing big and expensive infrastructure projects.

Backers of the legislation want to use up to 15 percent of the Legacy Fund’s principal every two years for projects such as flood protection and water systems.

Sen. David Hogue and Rep. Roscoe Streyle, both of Minot, are sponsoring the bill. They say the loans would help finish projects sooner and save in interest and inflation costs.

It would be the first time the Republican-led Legislature has seriously eyed the principal of the Legacy Fund that was approved by voters in 2010 and holds more than $5.2 billion.

RUTHVILLE, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Transportation is examining an intersection that some consider dangerous between Minot and the Minot Air Force Base.

The Minot Daily News reports that the agency is seeking public input following a recent fatal accident that occurred at the U.S. Highway 83 intersection.

An Air Force Base man in his car collided with a semitrailer near Ruthville on Feb. 15, resulting in the man’s death two days later. The state Highway Patrol found that the semitrailer’s driver failed to yield at the intersection.

Many motorists think the intersection’s overhead lights aren’t adequate for warning drivers of possible dangers. Burlington resident Paul Engledinger suggests a speed reduction or a traffic light.

The agency may hold a public information meeting this month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck church is planning a $2 million expansion after growing 45 percent in the past five years.

The church has pledges for half of the amount needed for the expansion project.

Pastor Andy Early says they’re extending the church’s reach to the south end of town through new bible study groups. He says the south side bible study sessions will focus on topics such as marriage and parenting.

OBIT-BANNISTER

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — The world of athletics is paying tribute to British sports icon Roger Bannister, the first runner to break the 4-minute barrier in the mile.

Bannister died Saturday in Oxford, England, at the age of 88.

On May 6, 1954, Bannister ran four laps on a cinder track in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds to crack the mythical 4-minute mile — a feat many had thought humanly impossible. Bannister then gave up running to pursue a long and distinguished medical career.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reasons to celebrate but also ample cause for trepidation as they meet Monday at the White House.

Trump’s long-awaited Mideast peace plan has yet to arrive, even as Palestinians and other critics insist it will be dead on arrival. And although Israel’s government is overjoyed by Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, misgivings are percolating over Iran. Israel sees Trump’s efforts to date to crack down on Israel’s arch-enemy as lacking.

Netanyahu arrived in the United States over the weekend as Washington was gearing up for the annual conference of AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobby. He plans to hold a meeting and working lunch with Trump on Monday before speaking at the conference later in the week

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is embracing the potential for a trade war after announcing his intent to place tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, as he rebuffs allies who have pushed to be exempted from the stiff duties. The protectionist policy will be made official in the next two weeks, White House officials said Sunday, as the administration defended the decision from critics in Washington and overseas.Trump’s pronouncement Thursday that he would impose tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively, on imported steel and aluminum, roiled markets and rankled allies. While his rhetoric has been focused on China, the duties will also cover significant imports from Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan and the European Union.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — China, North Korea’s closest thing to an ally, is applauding a visit by a South Korean delegation to the North’s capital.”We believe it is a good thing, and look forward to a positive outcome of the meeting,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regularly scheduled news conference Monday. The South Korean presidential office announced that the envoys will meet Monday evening with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.China has long called for a resumption of talks between North Korea and other countries embroiled in tensions over the North’s nuclear and missile programs.China has signed on to tough new United Nations economic sanctions against North Korea, but says those measures should be carefully targeted and serve only as an inducement for negotiations.”We hope all sides will bear in mind the larger picture of peninsular peace and stability … and make joint efforts not only for better ties between the North and South but for the early accomplishment of denuclearization and lasting peace and stability on the peninsula,” Geng said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — They spent their first year in Washington as an untouchable White House power couple, commanding expansive portfolios, outlasting rivals and enjoying unmatched access to the president. But Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have undergone a swift and stunning reckoning of late, their powers restricted, their enemies emboldened and their future in the West Wing uncertain.Kushner, long the second-most powerful man in the West Wing, is under siege. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law has lost influential White House allies and has been stripped of his top security clearance. He remains under the shadow of the Russia probe and has seen his business dealings come under renewed scrutiny. And Kushner’s most powerful patron, the president himself, has wavered recently on whether his daughter and son-in-law belong in the White House anymore.
