Jamestown (NDFU) – North Dakota Farmers Union has announced that it is offering discounts to any youth who registers early for Farmers Union Camp between now and May 15. The state’s largest grassroots youth camping program for rural and urban kids gets underway June 10.
Camps are divided into junior and senior level age groups for kids in grades 3-6 and 7-12. Fifteen separate four- and five-day camps are held throughout the summer at sites near Valley City and Elgin with free transportation provided. More than 1,000 youth attended Farmers Union Camp last year.
Bri Sorensen, NDFU Youth Education Supervisor says, “The program is designed to highlight the individuality in all youth. Our camp counselors encourage positive and constructive attitudes in a fun environment. Kids participate in traditional activities like swimming and singing around the campfire, but we also incorporate team building exercises and leadership activities. The camp theme this year is ‘Have Courage and Be Kind.’”
Sorensen also said youth organize and operate their own cooperative – a camp store – as part of the program’s educational focus on cooperatives. In the past three years, youth have donated more than $9,400 in camp store dividends to charities across the state.
To learn more and to register for a $25 discount off the camp fee, go to ndfu.org/youth. Scholarships are also available in most counties for students needing fee assistance. Call Sorensen at 701-952-1404 for more information.

South Korean presidential national security director Chung Eui-yong said the two Koreas agreed to hold their third-ever summit at a tense border village in late April. He also said the leaders will establish a “hotline” communication channel to lower military tensions, and speak together before the planned summit.
Chung led a 10-member South Korean delegation that met with Kim during a two-day visit to Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital. The delegation returned on Tuesday.
BEIRUT (AP) — U.N. war crimes investigators say a Russian plane was apparently behind a deadly airstrike in November in Syria’s Idlib province that killed 84 people at a marketplace, an attack which could amount to a war crime.
The findings were reported by the U.N.’s Commission of Inquiry on Syria on Tuesday.
It’s the first time the commission has pinned responsibility for civilian deaths in Syria on Russia. The report says “all available information” indicates a Russian plane carried out the Nov. 13 airstrike that hit a market, surrounding houses and a police station run by Western-backed Syrian rebels in the town of Atarib, in northern Idlib.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say a military investigation into the attack in Niger that killed four American service members concludes the team didn’t get required senior command approval for their risky mission to capture a high-level Islamic State militant. It doesn’t point to that failure as a cause of the deadly ambush.
Initial information suggested the Army Special Forces team set out to meet local Nigerien leaders, only to be redirected to assist a second unit hunting for a militant, Doundou Chefou, suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of an American aid worker. Officials say it now appears the team sought Chefou from the onset, without outlining that intent to higher-level commanders.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican allies of President Donald Trump are pleading with him to back off his threat of turning to international tariffs, but Trump says he won’t.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans worry that such tariffs would spark a trade war. Ryan is urging the White House not to go forward with the plan.
Republican leaders of the House Ways and Means Committee have circulated a letter opposing Trump’s proposed tariffs, and GOP congressional leaders suggest they might attempt to prevent them.
MOSCOW (AP) — The Kremlin says Russia has not been approached to help in an investigation over how and why a former Russian spy was found critically ill in a shopping mall in a town in southern England.

Skripal, who is said to have suffered exposure to an “unknown substance” was freed in 2010 as part of a U.S.-Russian spy swap. A woman was also found unconscious Sunday afternoon in Salisbury, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) west of London.
Dimitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, said Tuesday that there has been no request for help but that “Moscow is always ready to cooperate.”
