weekend with daytime highs by Saturday currently forecast in the

Firefighters responded to a report of an electrical smell and smoke at the Hilton Garden Inn about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Crews found smoke through the hotel and a small fire in the air-handling unit on the fourth floor. Guests were evacuated.

KFGO reports firefighters also responded to smoke at Lucky’s 13 Pub, Shotgun Sally’s, Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings, all in the same area. Customers were evacuated because smoke was heavy enough to cause respiratory problems.

Cass County Electric Cooperative had power restored to affected customers by midnight.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck police are planning a “heavy” presence at Legacy High School after three bomb threats in two days.

Officers plan to conduct sweeps of the school building throughout the day. Student movement off campus also is being restricted.

The Bismarck Tribune reports belongings of guests in the building will be searched, and students’ possessions might also be subject to search.

A threat mid-Monday prompted a shutdown of the school for the rest of the day. A threat early Tuesday afternoon prompted the evacuation of students, but they later returned to classes. A third threat was made late in the afternoon Tuesday.

The FBI is helping in the investigation.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Two former Minot nurses have pleaded not guilty to stealing prescribed drugs for hospice patients.

Kim Kochel and April Beckler are accused of thefts between December 2012 and September 2014 while working for Trinity Hospice. They each face three felony charges related to theft and endangering a vulnerable adult.

Attorneys had argued over whether the patients were “vulnerable adults” under state law. Judge Todd Cresap allowed the charge to stand.

Both women were reported to the North Dakota Board of Nursing in 2014 and voluntarily surrendered their licenses.

The Minot Daily News reports the charges against the two women carry a total maximum punishment of 20 years in prison. A pretrial conference in the case is scheduled for August.

An attorney listed for him in court documents, Jeff Nehring, did not immediately return telephone calls Tuesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota state auditor says he will review Gov. Doug Burgum’s travel spending.

State Auditor Joshua Gallion notified Burgum in a letter last week of the review, which also will cover the final 10 months of former GOP Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s administration.

The Associated Press obtained the letter through an open records request.

The probe comes after the Republican governor was heavily criticized for traveling to Minneapolis to watch the Super Bowl from a stadium suite provided by Xcel Energy. Burgum later said he repaid Xcel for all costs related to the trip — almost $40,000.

Gallion says he can’t comment on the audit because it is ongoing.

Burgum’s spokesman Mike Nowatzki says the office will work with the auditor. He says an earlier audit of Burgum’s office ended in a clean report.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say an emulsion spill has reached a creek in southwestern North Dakota.

The North Dakota Department of Health says the spill was discovered 8 miles southwest of Rhame in Bowman County on Monday and was reported the same day. Oil emulsion is a mix of crude oil and produced water from a well.

Officials say a flow line owned by Denbury Onshore LLC leaked. Initial estimates indicate about 420 gallons of produced water and 84 gallons of oil were released, with some of the produced water and crude oil reaching Spring Creek.

Staffers from the Health Department and the North Dakota Industrial Commission are inspecting the site and will continue monitoring the investigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says he has completed an outpatient alcohol treatment program recommended by his court-appointed counselor.

The 35-year-old Republican was arrested for drunken driving in Mandan on Sept. 30. An arrest report showed he had blood alcohol content of 0.20 percent, which is more than twice the state’s 0.08 legal limit.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence. He was given a 10-day suspended jail sentence and put on unsupervised probation for a year.

Rauschenberger says he recently completed four months of weekly meetings that were recommended by his counselor. He says he continues seeking counselling on his own.

NHL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kyle Turris scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Nashville Predators over the Minnesota Wild 2-1 to snap a three-game skid. The win clinched the Predators home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. They also moved three points ahead of Tampa Bay in the chase for the Presidents’ Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Boston Bruins pulled within a point of Tampa Bay for the NHL’s Atlantic Division lead, while the Nashville Predators stayed five points ahead of Winnipeg in the Central Division.

The Bruins picked up a point with a 5-4 shootout loss at Winnipeg. Brandon Tanev recorded his first career hat trick before Patrik Laine (LY’-nay) delivered the deciding goal in the fourth round.

NBA…

UNDATED (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs can probably deal with Tuesday’s loss to the Washington Wizards, but the loss of LaMarcus Aldridge would be another story.

Aldridge scored 13 points before he limped off with a left knee injury late in the second quarter of the Spurs’ 116-106 setback at Washington. He did not return to the bench after halftime and is scheduled to undergo an MRI.

Aldridge is the biggest reason the Spurs have stayed afloat without Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard most of this season.

Markieff Morris scored 15 points on 7 of 7 shooting in just 17 minutes to help the Wizards halt a three-game skid. Kelly Oubre (OO’-bray) Jr. finished with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Otto Porter Jr. added 14 points for the Southeast Division leaders.

Both teams are sixth in their respective conferences.

Checking out Tuesday’s other NBA action:

— The Rockets have another double-digit winning streak after Eric Gordon tied a career high with eight 3-pointers while scoring 31 points in a 118-86 laugher over the Bulls. Trevor Ariza added 21 points while James Harden was given the night off.

— The Trail Blazers pulled out a 107-103 win at New Orleans behind Damian Lillard’s 41 points. Lilliard provided 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Northwest Division leaders won for the 15th time in 17 games despite a rough outing from CJ McCallum, who finished with seven points on 3 of 19 shooting.

— DeMar DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas (YOH’-nuhs val-ehn-CHOO’-nuhs) and Fred VanVleet scored 15 points apiece and Jakob Poetl delivered all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter of the Raptors’ 114-110 win against the Nuggets. The Raptors went on a 13-2 run to erase an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit before moving 3 ½ games ahead of Boston for the Eastern Conference lead.

— Victor Oladipo (oh-lah-DEE’-poh) contributed 24 points and the Pacers pulled within a half-game of Cleveland for the third seed in the East by silencing the Warriors, 92-81. Thaddeus Young and Bojan (BOY’-ahn) Bogdanovic scored 17 points apiece for playoff-bound Indiana. The Warriors again played without four starters and have suffered back-to-back losses for only the ninth time in four years under head coach Steve Kerr.

— Tobias Harris scored 19 points and the Clippers hit six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of a 105-98 comeback over the Bucks. Los Angeles trailed by five before a 13-0 run in the final period, helping them get within 1 ½ games of Minnesota for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

— Harrison Barnes had 20 points, six assists and five rebounds as the Mavericks won at Sacramento, 103-97 to halt a five-game losing streak. Protesters forced a lockdown of Golden1 Center for the second time in six days as they demonstrated in protest of the March 18 fatal police shooting of Stephon Clark.

UNDATED (AP) — The AP All-America First Team has three freshmen on the squad for the first time in its 70-year history.

Oklahoma’s Trae Young, Deandre Ayton of Arizona and Duke’s Marvin Bagley III were all named first-teamers in the AP All-America squad announced on Tuesday. Young led the nation in scoring and assists in his lone season in Norman.

They were joined by Villanova’s Jalen Brunson and Kansas guard Devonte’ Graham on the team selected by the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly AP Top 25.

Timberwolves…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have seven games to go in this strenuous regular season. They’re tantalizingly close to the tormented franchise’s first appearance in the playoffs in 14 years. The trouble is their once-sturdy postseason bid is also teetering on the brink of being painfully denied. After losing at home to lowly Memphis, Minnesota sits in eighth place in the Western Conference. Coach Tom Thibodeau says the young players on the team need to show more toughness.

Twins…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes will begin the season on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. Outfielder Ryan LaMarre beat out Zack Granite for a reserve spot on the opening day 25-man roster. The Twins will select the contract of LaMarre to complete their roster.

In world and national news…

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump says there’s “a good chance” that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will “do what is right for his people and for humanity” and make moves toward peace.

In a pair of tweets early Wednesday, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him a meeting Xi had with Kim this week “went very well.”

Trump said that according to Xi, the North Korean leader “looks forward” to meeting the American president. The White House has said Trump plans to meet Kim by May amid nuclear tensions between the two nations.

Trump said that meanwhile “and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Relatives of an unarmed black man killed by Sacramento police say they’re skeptical of a promised investigation into the shooting.

Twenty-two-year-old Stephon Gordon was shot by two Sacramento police officers responding to a report of someone breaking car windows March 18. Police say they thought he was holding a gun. It was a cellphone.

The shooting has sparked more than a week of protests. Clark’s wake is planned for Wednesday.

Clark’s uncle, Curtis Gordon, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the family is skeptical that the killing will be properly investigated.

The California attorney general’s office on Tuesday joined the investigation. Police Chief Daniel Hahn says he hopes that will bring transparency to the probe.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is taking up its second big partisan redistricting case of the term amid signs the justices could place limits on drawing maps for political gain.

The justices are hearing arguments Wednesday in an appeal filed by Republicans in Maryland. They complain that Democrats who controlled the state government in 2011 drew a congressional district for the express purpose of ousting the Republican incumbent and replacing him with a Democrat.

In Wisconsin, Democrats are challenging legislative districts drawn by Republicans statewide. Those districts gave Republicans a huge majority in a state that otherwise is closely divided between the parties.

The Supreme Court has never struck down districts for being too partisan.

A decision in both cases is expected by late June.

(AP) Facebook is giving its privacy tools a makeover as it reels from criticisms over its data practices and faces tighter European regulations in the coming months.

The changes won’t affect Facebook’s privacy policies or the types of data it gathers about its users. But the company hopes its 2.2 billion users will have an easier time navigating its complex and often confusing privacy and security settings.

Facebook says it’s trying to make the controls easier to find and to give users a simpler way to access and download the data it collects on them.

Wednesday’s announcement follows revelations that a Trump-affiliated consulting firm got data on millions of unsuspecting Facebook users. Facebook is also facing criticism for collecting years of data on call and text histories from Android users.
