During his interview, Van Horn said he appreciates North Dakota’s investment in Mayville State. The school is located in Mayville in eastern North Dakota, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Fargo.

Mayville State president Gary Hagan plans to retire this summer. The search for the new president began last November after Hagan announced he plans to retire after serving more than four decades at the university.

Bismarck  (CSi)   – Gov. Doug Burgum and members of his administration met Wednesday with statewide elected officials, agency leaders and team members from across state government to provide updates on the administration’s five strategic initiatives and invite greater collaboration across agencies.

About 60 people from cabinet and non-cabinet agencies assembled in the Capitol’s Brynhild Haugland Room for the unique meeting aimed at enhancing communication and collaboration with the different agencies and branches of government on the five strategic initiatives: Reinventing Government, Main Street Initiative, Transforming Education, Tribal Partnerships and Behavioral Health, including recovery from the disease of addiction.

Burgum says, “All of us in state government take seriously our collective responsibility to serve the citizens of North Dakota, and this is an invitation to assemble as a team and discover how we can better align on our common goals.  Budget challenges, demographics, digital transformation, cybersecurity challenges and very tight national, state and local labor markets are all powerful forces that will require us to re-envision our current siloed agency approach to delivering services.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Taxable sales and purchases in North Dakota increased slightly in 2017 led by rebounding oil activity in the western part of the state.

North Dakota’s taxable sales and purchases are a key indicator of economic activity in the state. Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger (RAW’-shun-bur-gur) says North Dakota’s taxable sales and purchases increased 3 percent in 2017 to $17.9 billion.

North Dakota taxable sales and purchases set a record of $28.2 billion in 2014.

Rauschenberger says only five of the 15 major industry sectors had growth from 2016 to 2017. Mining and oil extraction had the biggest increase, at more than 52 percent.

Of the state’s biggest cities, only the oil-patch towns of Williston and Dickinson had an increase of taxable sales and purchases last year.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Remodeling at a North Dakota jail has made it difficult for defense attorneys to meet with clients, holding up some court cases.

Sheriff Bob Barnard says the situation at the Ward County Jail in Minot is temporary, but that it’s caused some issues. He tells the Minot Daily News that only one visitation room is available until more progress is made in construction.

Thirteen appointment slots are available for the room on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Defense attorney Ashley Gulke says scheduling problems often push her visits with clients to Sundays or evenings, which cuts into her family time.

Barnard says the remodeling is expected to be completed in August. But he anticipates that there will be more meeting rooms available for the lawyers and their clients in June or July.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo eighth-grader will represent North Dakota in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May.

In world and national news…

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A funeral will be held today for a 22-year-old unarmed black man killed by police in California’s capital city, which is on edge after days of unrest.

The Rev. Al Sharpton plans to give the eulogy for Stephon Clark at Thursday’s funeral at Bayside of South Sacramento church.

Some mourners are predicting increased unrest beyond the unruly but mostly nonviolent protests that have disrupted traffic and two professional basketball games since the March 18 shooting.

Family members and authorities are calling for calm.

Two Sacramento police officers who were responding to a report of someone breaking car windows fatally shot Clark in his grandparents’ backyard. Police say they thought Clark was holding a gun. He was found with a cellphone.

Some have called for the officers to face criminal charges.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s surprise choice to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs made a good impression on the boss in January when giving a glowing health report on Trump’s physical and mental well-being.

Trump told aides he liked White House physician Ronny Jackson’s smooth turn before the cameras and his ability to field reporters’ questions. Now Trump has tapped Jackson to replace David Shulkin as VA secretary.

During the January briefing, Jackson spent nearly an hour exhausting reporters’ questions, extoling the president’s “incredible genes” and joking that if only Trump had eaten a healthier diet over the last 20 years, “he might live to be 200 years old.”

And he achieved a more consequential goal: effectively stamping out questions that had been brewing about the president’s mental fitness.

PAJU, South Korea (AP) — Japan’s government spokesman says his country has been in touch with North Korea, but refuses to say whether a possible meeting between their leaders is being discussed.

Suga declined to say if a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is being discussed.

The Asahi newspaper reported Thursday that Kim’s administration has mentioned a possible summit with Abe in June following one with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Suga welcomed plans for an April 27 meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas as a sign of progress resulting from international pressure on North Korea.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says she will continue to campaign for the education of girls in Pakistan.

Her comments come after she arrived back in her homeland for the first time since she was shot in 2012 by Taliban militants angered at her championing of girls’ education.

With tears in her eyes, Yousafzi recalled Thursday having to leave Pakistan for treatment when she was shot.

At a ceremony at Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s office, the university student said she had always thought about returning to Pakistan.

VALENCIA, Venezuela (AP) — Distraught families are clamoring for information about detained relatives following a fire that Venezuela’s chief prosecutor says killed 68 people when it swept through the cells of the state police station.

Angry relatives fought with police outside the facility Wednesday after being unable to get any information on casualties from Wednesday’s fire, which townspeople said erupted after a disturbance involving detainees. Officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd, and local officials would confirm only that there were fatalities.

Late Wednesday, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said on his official Twitter account that 68 people were dead and nearly all of them were prisoners. He said the dead included two women who were staying overnight at the station, but he didn’t provide any further details.
