 Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The annual Potato Bar and Silent Auction was held March 9^, 2013, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jamestown.  President Jennifer Barnard reminds residents that it is the biggest event of the year for the Humane Society.

A large crowd filled the KC Hall, with 90 guests participating in the silent auction.  Potatos with chili, cheese, sour cream, and salsa were served.  A wide selection of desserts and cookies were donated, and were quickly consumed.  Front page photo of Ryder by Chris Sheppard.

Upcoming events include: a Bake Sale at the Buffalo Mall on March 16 starting at 10am.  Those wishing to donate baked goods should drop them at the mall around 9:30 a.m.

There is a great need for dog volunteers.

Duties include; cleaning cages, feeding/watering, helping with visitors, and of course having fun and loving the dogs.

-James River Humane Society’s Annual Meeting will  be held  today (Monday March 11, 2013.)

All current members of JRHS (not just board members) are invited to attend and vote for next year’s officers. Ms. Barnard added that she’s stepping down as president, after serving for three and a half years.

The meeting will be held at Hardee’s at 6:30pm, which is earlier then previous years, so note the time change for this year.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Mar 7, 2013) — Farm Rescue Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps farm families recovering from injury or illness, has announced that individuals may now apply for assistance in acquiring specialized, non-medical equipment to overcome physical challenges.

Temporary volunteer labor is also available to help with physical challenges during the recovery process to a limited number of cases.

Farm Rescue Foundation President, and founder, Bill Gross says, “Sustaining life on a farm can be challenge to anyone following an unexpected physical setback. The Farm Rescue Foundation is here to help during the recovery process to ensure that families have an opportunity to continue viable operations. We are pleased to announce this new available assistance to farm families facing unique physical challenges.”

Gross is also the founder of Farm Rescue, a separate nonprofit organization that provides planting or harvesting assistance to those who have experienced a major illness, or natural disaster.

While Farm Rescue provides assistance during crises in the form of fieldwork, the Farm Rescue Foundation provides assistance during the recovery phase consisting of special equipment or physical labor.

Applicants for this new assistance need not have received assistance from Farm Rescue.

 

 WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A New Rockford man wanted for allegedly stabbing a family member turned himself in to police in West Fargo over the weekend.
 
20-year-old Ty Lowseth allegedly fled after the incident at his home Wednesday night, and surrendered on Saturday.
 
     He is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Court documents do not list an attorney for him.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty for driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his brother.
 
     Jamie Belgarde, of St. Michael, is charged in federal court with involuntary manslaughter.
 
     Authorities say the 38-year-old Belgarde was under the influence of alcohol and speeding last June 23 when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle vaulted, rolled and came to rest upside down in a field.
 
     Donald Belgarde Jr., a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
     The charge carries a maximum penalty of eight years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled May 29 in Fargo.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota prisoner convicted of killing and dismembering a Wisconsin man has lost his appeal over medical treatment at the state penitentiary. Dennis Gaede says he requested a root canal and crown after he cracked a tooth, but the tooth was pulled instead. A lower court previously threw out Gaede’s original lawsuit, and a federal appeals court last week ruled not to overturn the judge’s ruling.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature is slated this week to tackle some of the weightiest issues of the session – including the controversial topic of whether to expand Medicaid. The measure will be a tough sell to Senate Republicans, who have two-thirds control of the chamber. North Dakota’s Medicaid program now covers about 65,000 people a month.
 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature this week is expected to take action on a package of measures aim at strengthening the state’s strict abortion laws. Senators will consider a bill that would ban doctors from performing an abortion if a fetal heartbeat is detected. The Senate also will review a bill that would prevent abortions based on gender selection or a genetic defect.  

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) has proclaimed March as “Women Veterans Month.” Dalrymple says he signed a proclamation to honor the generations of North Dakota women who have served. Dalrymple says North Dakota has more than 6,000 women veterans.

 

 MANNING, N.D. (AP) – A western North Dakota sheriff says he’s had enough of sitting behind a desk.
 
     Dunn County Sheriff Don Rockvoy says he’s resigning to work as a truck driver in the oil patch. He has been sheriff since July 2009.
 
     Rockvoy says  he would rather be on the road and says he doesn’t like the way that politics have dominated the job in the last couple of years.
 
     Rockvoy says an increase in crime and traffic accidents in the county since he took over has made it difficult to train and maintain staff.
 
     Dunn County Commissioner Daryl Dukart says Rockvoy did a good job as sheriff and he’s sorry to see him leave.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota researcher is trying to convince farmers and ranchers to take cover from the sun.
 
     Kathryn Stensgard, who grew up on a farm in western North Dakota, recently completed a skin cancer study as a doctor of nursing practice student at North Dakota State University.
 
     Stensgard says  she hopes the research will reach rural residents and persuade them to use sunscreen and other forms of sun protection.
 
     Stengsard’s report says there was an average of 162 cases of melanoma – a serious form of skin cancer – in North Dakota from 2005 to 2009.
 
     Stensgard says she has also seen the disease first-hand. She says five relatives on her father’s side of the family have dealt with skin cancer.

 

 DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Community leaders in Devils Lake think North Dakota’s 11th-largest city should have a convention center.
 
     The  City Commission has authorized a $25,000 study. The cost will be split by the city’s economic development organization and a local tourism committee.
 
     The study is expected to take about six weeks. Mayor Dick Johnson says city leaders then will develop a proposal to present to the community’s 7,100 residents.
 
     Johnson says developers have expressed interest in building another motel or hotel in Devils Lake. He says a convention center-hotel complex could serve as a small-scale version of the Alerus Center-Canad Inn complex in Grand Forks.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Members of the Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre say they’ve got new confidence as they celebrate the theater’s 65th consecutive season and its 30th year in its permanent home at the Fire Hall Theatre.
 
     It also helps that the theater recently won the North Dakota Governor’s Award for Art Organization.
 
     Theater officials say that hundreds of actors have graced the theater’s stage, and some of them have gone on to becoming professional actors.
 
     Executive Director Kathy Coudle-King says that people in New York would “sell their firstborn for a place like” the stage in the converted fire station. She says lasting 65 years is “extraordinary” for a nonprofit organization .

 

 

In sports…

Bismarck,, ND  (KCSiT.V. Sports Mar 9, 2013)  –  The Jamestown Blue Jays girl’s basketball team Saturday,  defeated Minot 52-43 in a state-tournament qualifying game at the West Region tournament in Bismarck.

Kyra Dewald was the  Blue Jays high scorer, with 19 points.

McKayla Orr contributed  14 points, while,  Paige Peterson hit another double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

The  Blue Jays  (17-5) play the  loser of the East Region championship game, West Fargo, (19-3) who lost to Fargo Shanley 51-41 Saturday night.

The Jays and Packers square off Thursday, at 7-p.m., at the Bismarck Civic Center.

 

  JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – All the teams from the Dakotas that made the NAIA Division II basketball tournaments have been bounced out.
 
     The Jamestown College women made it to the Sweet Sixteen but lost to Eastern Oregon 76-62 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Dakota State men made it to the Elite Eight but lost 72-59 to Grace over the weekend in Point Lookout, Mo.
 
     Four other teams from the Dakotas lost in earlier rounds at the national tournaments: the Jamestown men, the Mayville State women and the Valley City State men and women.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota women’s hockey team has received at at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
 
     UND will play No. 1 seed Minnesota in a quarterfinal game Saturday in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers are the defending national champion and haven’t lost in 38 games this season.
 
     Minnesota beat UND 2-0 this past Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship game.
 
     The winner of the quarterfinal game this Saturday moves on to the women’s Frozen Four, which also will be in Minneapolis. Minnesota beat UND last year in the quarterfinals.

 

Jamestown ND (KCSi-T.V. Sports) —   For decades, the North Dakota State bowlers have remained true to the  Bowl For Veterans BVL mission.  They have steadfastly stood for our nation’s heroes and work earnestly for the cause.  At the helm for almost 30 years is Julie Schmidt, of Jamestown.

The BVL web site says, Julie has been promoting, coordinating and advocating for the BVL cause for as long as anyone in North Dakota can remember.

It begins at their annual state meeting, when she writes a report for the agenda and gives an oral report.

On the state level, the state tournament is a successful fund-raiser.  The host association sets up a BVL booth and dispenses brochures, and also sells bowling towels and pins with the proceeds going to BVL.  They also have 50/50 raffles each shift with half of the money for charities and half for the bowlers.

Their 2012 state tournament was held Julie’s backyard, Jamestown, and she was the local chair.  Julie asked Thelma Trecker (their VP and local BVL person) to handle BVL.  Thelma and her daughter Susan decorated the booth with patriotic lights, posters, flags, and a big sign to attract attention.  Julie says, “It was the nicest BVL booth I have seen in all my years of attending state tournaments!” In addition to selling bowling towels and pins, the ladies sold chances on bowling pin dolls, decorated by another local bowler.  One doll was given away each weekend of the tournament.

On the local level, Julie encourages all bowling associations to have a fund-raiser for BVL  and those that do are asked to send in a report to Julie as to how much they sent to BVL  and what method they used to raise the money.  Julie notes that most hold 50/50 tournaments or pass the hat on league night during BVL week or at their end-of-the season banquet.

Julie also manages the State Senior Tournament and where they provide coffee and cookies and ask for free will donations to BVL.

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials say it’s time to get fish houses off the ice.
 
     The department has set a deadline of midnight Friday for anglers to remove permanent shelters.
 
     Nancy Boldt, the department’s water safety coordinator, says  ice conditions can change quickly during mild weather.
 
     Anglers can continue to use portable fish houses as long as they’re removed daily.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State officials say that fishing on Lake Sakakawea (suh-kah-kuh-WEE’-uh) should be as good as ever this season, but the Missouri River and Lake Oahe will be iffy at best.
 
     Dave Fryda of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department says Lake Sakakawea is in great shape for walleyes, smallmouth bass and other species. He says that northern pike are “through the roof,” but things don’t look as good for rainbow smelt. Acoustic surveys show a 40 percent decline in smelt numbers. Fryda tells the Bismarck Tribune that it’s a hit the lake can take for at least a year.
 
     The Missouri River and Lake Oahe (oh-WAH’-hee) are still trying to come back from the 2011 flooding that flushed smelt downstream. Fewer species are thriving in the system because of that flooding.

 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Taylor Braun scored 27 points and Marshall Bjorklund had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help North Dakota State defeat UMKC 69-58 Sunday night in the Summit League tournament quarterfinals.
 
     Braun had 24 points in the second half and was 16 of 18 for the game from the free-throw line. Lawrence Alexander chipped in 14 points for the third-seeded Bison (23-9), who face No. 2 seed Western Illinois in the semifinals on Monday. The Leathernecks (22-7) beat South Dakota 54-53 on Saturday.

LAS VEGAS (AP Mar 10, 2013 Mar 10, 2013) — Matt Kenseth won on his 41st birthday for his new Joe Gibbs Racing team, barely holding off Kasey Kahne for his third victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Kenseth earned his 25th career victory in just his third start in the JGR Toyota after leaving Roush Fenway in the offseason. He took the lead away from Kahne out of a late restart and fended off Kahne’s Chevrolet over the final laps, adding another trophy to his Las Vegas victories in 2003 and 2004.

Pole sitter Brad Keselowski finished third, with hometown driver Kyle Busch in fourth and Carl Edwards fifth.

Kenseth is just the third NASCAR driver to win on his birthday, joining Cale Yarborough – who did it twice – and Busch.

GOLF-WGC CADILLAC CHAMPIONSHIP…
  
     DORAL, Fla. (AP) – Tiger Woods has won his 17th World Golf Championships title by capturing the Cadillac Championship for his 76th tour win.  Woods posted a final round 1-under 71 for a two shot win over Steve Stricker
 
     Woods began the day four strokes clear of second place and he is now 40-2 when he has the outright lead going into the final round.

     RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (AP) – Scott Brown birdied his final hole for a 2-under-par 70 and a one-shot victory at the Puerto Rico Open. Fabian Gomez opened the door with a bogey on 18 and had to settle for a tie for second place with 19-year-old Jordan Spieth (speeth). They shot 71 and 67, respectively.
 
     Brown’s first PGA Tour title gives him a two-year exemption and a spot in the PGA Championship this summer.

     UNDATED (AP) – The U.S. has advanced to the second round of the World Baseball Classic by rallying for a 9-4 win over Canada.
 
     The Americans trailed 3-2 until Adam Jones laced a two-run double in the eighth inning. Eric Hosmer (HAHZ’-mur) put the game out of reached with a three-run double in the ninth.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – Officials say two U.S. troops and three Afghan policemen have been killed in a firefight sparked by an officer who started shooting inside a police station while U.S. forces were visiting. The shooting comes a day after a deadline given by Afghans for U.S. special forces to withdraw from the province.
 
     VATICAN CITY (AP) – One of the debates among the College of Cardinals at the Vatican is whether the Catholic Church needs a task-master or a people pope. Some say the Vatican needs to be cleaned up by someone tough-minded while others want a pontiff who can inspire the faithful. Several cardinals signed up to speak at the closed-door morning session today. Deliberations begin tomorrow.
 
     BRUSSELS (AP) – The latest European Union sanctions on Iran center on nine people said to be responsible for human rights violations. EU foreign ministers meeting today in Brussels added the nine to the list of those subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze, bringing the number of people sanctioned in this way to 87.
 
     ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Updated official data show Greece’s economy still shrank in the final quarter of 2012, but not as fast as initially forecast. The contraction still totaled 6.4 percent. The country, which is dependent on bailout loans to survive, is in its sixth year of recession, which has been exacerbated by harsh austerity measures demanded by creditors to curb runaway budget deficits.
 
     WARREN, Ohio (AP) – Investigators say a key factor in a deadly Ohio crash involving teenagers was speed. A sport utility vehicle carrying eight teenagers smashed into a guardrail and flipped over into a swampy pond, killing five boys and the young woman driving.
