The North Dakota Highway Patrol’s report says a 2013 Peterbuilt towing an oversized load, driven by 48 year old Robert McBride, of Sundre, AB, was transporting an oversized air-cooled heat exchanger from Claremore Oklahoma to Calgary Alberta. McBride failed to follow the designated route noted on the oversize load permit and continued westbound on I-94 before noticing an overpass that appeared low.
Sgt. Tom Herzig says, McBride slowed to approximately 15 miles per hour before lodging the oversized load under the overpass portion of I-94 exit 257. A tow truck pulled the load rear-ward to dislodge the load. McBride backed the truck and trailer one mile to Highway 281. Officers escorted the truck along the proper route. McBride was not injured. He was cited for violating conditions of a permit.
One westbound lane was shut down for approximately one hour. Exit 257 was shut down for an hour while the DOT inspected the overpass. The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Jamestown Police, assisted at the scene. More information as it becomes available.
