Update… Jamestown (CSi-AP)  The Jamestown City Fire Department was called out at 2:51 p.m., Tuesday, to a report of a chemical spill of flammable Magnesium powder, at the high school science lab, in Gackle.

The Fargo HazMat team was also called to the scene.

Logan County Emergency Manager, Daniel Schwartz says the Gackle-Streeter Public School was evacuated, after the spill occurred in a closet in the science lab.  The closet was closed after the spill, as the Fargo HazMat team arrived at the school shortly after 5-p.m.

A teacher and student reported hearing a “popping” sound in a storage cabinet.

Schwartz says the evacuation was necessary, as there was a risk of explosion if the powder would have come in contact with moisture or a heat source. School officials also shut down mechanical and electrical systems as a precaution.

Jamestown City Fire Chief, Jim Reuther says, Jamestown served as backup, as the Fargo team entered,  retrieved, and sealed the originally  glass bottled magnesium, in a can,  and removed  it from the school, finishing just after 5:30-p.m..

Reuther estimated the bottle, which was discovered, broken had under a half pint.

Logan County Sheriff Andrew Bartholomaus reports no injuries.

Classes at Gackle-Streeter will be on the regular schedule, Wednesday.

Jamestown  (NDFU)   – North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) is calling on North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring to request a temporary two- to three-week waiver of hours of service requirements for commercial drivers to get anhydrous ammonia and other inputs to farmers. NDFU President Mark Watne  says, “Because of the restrictions in hours that drivers can log and the late spring, we’re running into problems with getting anhydrous ammonia and other inputs to the field in a timely manner.  A short-term waiver of hours of service requirements will ensure farmers get the inputs they need to complete spring planting.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota has agreed to enter settlement negotiations with a group of American Indians who sued the state over its expanded voter identification laws.

The settlement talks are scheduled for May 29 in Bismarck.

The agreement comes a week after U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland criticized the state for raising a “litany of embellished concerns” about people taking advantage of his ruling that expands the proof of identity Native Americans can use for North Dakota elections.

Hovland had suggested the parties negotiate a settlement.

Republican Gov. Doug Burgum last year signed legislation that reworked the ID laws after tribal members sued the state in 2016. Several members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota have continued to challenge the laws, saying they are a form of voter suppression.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Insurance Department is seeking a consultant to help find answers to reforming the state’s individual health care markets.

Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread says health care reform has stalled in Congress and consumers are facing increased costs and fewer options.

The cost of the study is estimated at $200,000. Godfread says several consultants already have submitted proposals ahead of the May 31 deadline.

Godfread says Blue Cross Blue Shield is the only insurer offering statewide coverage on the federal Affordable Care Act exchange. Sanford Health Plan offers coverage only in the Fargo and Bismarck areas.

WORTHINGTON, Minn. (AP) — A clay pipe linked to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 and considered sacred by Native Americans in Minnesota is being returned to the Sioux people after being sold at auction.

The U.S.-Dakota War lasted six weeks and left hundreds of Sioux, settlers and soldiers dead. The pipe was a peace offering for a soldier from Sioux Chief White Dog, one of 38 Sioux hanged in Mankato on Dec. 26, 1862, for alleged war crimes.
