Nationally known speaker, Tyler Presnell of Washington, spoke to the students.

At the age of 14, Presnell was involved in a car crash that has left him with a permanent brain injury that affected his short-term memory.

Presnell, who shared his story, and travels the country speaking to students about the importance of traffic safety and making positive choices involving motor vehicles.

Valley City Junior High Principal, Dan Larson, and Jamestown High School Principal, Bill Nold said, “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading preventable cause of death among 15 to 19 year olds in North Dakota. This is why it was important to bring this traffic safety presentation here today – to protect the future of our students.”

The NDDOT has provided resources to develop a new safety program centered on teens, called “Think About It.”

The “Think About It” slogan and associated activity was developed by a youth committee consisting of four students from Bismarck High School and Century High School.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The owner of a Bottineau bowling alley damaged by an arson fire is suing the company that insured the building. Thomas Kessler of Tommy Turtle Lanes accuses North Pointe Insurance of violating policy terms and failing to pay total benefits. The company calls the damage claims "overstated, unreasonable and excessive."
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Lawyers for American Crystal Sugar are asking the North Dakota Supreme Court to reconsider a decision to grant locked-out workers unemployment benefits.        The petition to rehear the case was filed with the state Supreme Court this week.        The Court ruled last month that more than 400 locked-out workers in North Dakota are eligible for unemployment benefits from Job Service North Dakota.        Crystal Sugar spokesman Brian Ingulsud says the company pays into an insurance fund so the unemployment benefits "have an impact on us."        Fargo attorney Dan Phillips represented the locked-out workers. He told The Forum that petitions to rehear cases are unusual.        Nearly 1,300 American Crystal Sugar workers in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa have been locked out since Aug. 1, 2011, after their union rejected the cooperative's proposed contract.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The attorney for the North Dakota university system says the state Board of Higher Education and the system chancellor did not break open meetings laws.

Claire Holloway told the board during a special meeting Thursday that her investigation found "no substantive evidence of willful wrongdoing" by Chancellor Ham Shirvani or the board.

Holloway was asked to look into possible open meetings violations and other policy issues after some of the allegations were raised by Sydney Hull, the board's student member.

Holloway says many of the allegations were "factually incorrect." She says she does not believe Shirvani has changed or adopted board policy on his own.

Shirvani has been under fire for his management practices. The state Senate voted recently to set aside money to buy out the chancellor's contract.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Some areas of North Dakota are among the fastest-growing in the nation because of the oil boom. The Census Bureau estimates show Williston is the fastest-growing micropolitan area in the country. Dickinson is third and Minot is 25th. A micropolitan area is one with a population between 10,000 and about 50,000.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Microsoft officials have announced a public-private partnership to bring Microsoft training and resources to the state's students.

The aim of the partnership - called "Digital Alliance" - is to boost skills in education, employability and entrepreneurship, with a specific focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

Dalrymple says officials hope the alliance will improve technology access, education improvement and training for students, residents and small businesses.

Microsoft officials did not have a dollar figure for the initial three-year commitment. Kristin Rhodes, Microsoft's general manager of U.S. education, says most of Microsoft's contribution will be in-kind work.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The state of North Dakota is partnering with Microsoft Corp. to provide technology training in schools.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the so-called digital alliance will focus on education, employability and entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math.

Microsoft has made an initial three-year commitment to the project, which will include programs for students in kindergarten through college graduate school.

Microsoft spokeswoman Kristin Rhodes says the workplace demand for technology skills is bound to increase and the digital alliance should help students "reach their full potential."

The cost of the program was not made available.
