Jamestown, ND (Feb 13 2013) – Daffodil Days deliveries and other sales takes place in the Jamestown area, March 19-22,, 2013.

Locally Nellie Degen says, the planned delivery that was to start Monday March 18, has been postponed due to weather and is scheduled to start on Tuesday March 19, 2013.

Community Relations Manager, Mary Dahl, of Fargo says, the Society would like to share that every bouquet of daffodils purchased is appreciated, and that the dollars raised by the event will be used to help the American Cancer Society continue its funding of cancer research, its state and national legislative advocacy, and its many educational and patient service programs.

A portion of the money raised by Daffodil Days in Stutsman County is being used to support Look Good … Feel Better, Reach to Recovery, Patient Lodging Program, and Transportation Assistance, which are very successful and well-utilized programs here in the area.

The money raised locally is also helping to fund the Society’s Cancer Resource Centers. Patients and their families from Jamestown and throughout North Dakota have been visiting these Centers for information and assistance following their diagnosis of cancer.

On Friday’s (Mar 15, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Nellie Degen said, the flowers will be delivered by Jim and Linda Bender to the locations at which the flower were ordered.

On Tuesday March 19th a limited number of daffodils will be able to be purchased at the Buffalo Mall, at the K-Mart entrance.

The products being sold remain the same as the pre-orders: a bunch of 10 daffodils for $10; bunch and a vase for $15; 3 bunches for $25; commemorative Boyd Bear & bunch for $25; Gift of Hope for a Cancer Patient for $25.

For more information, please contact Bill and Nellie Degen at 320-5440 or Jim and Linda Bender at 763-6277.

Ms. Dahl, adds, the Cancer Society’s Flower of Hope, is a sign of renewed life.

She says, Daffodil Days comes at a time of year when a sign of spring is a welcome sight.

She points out that, once again along with the Degen’s and Bender’s, the Jamestown High School National Honor Society, under the supervision of Tammy Mullowney, hosted the event in Jamestown and neighboring communities of Stutsman County.

Don’s House of Flowers is keeping the flowers fresh until they are delivered, on Tuesday beginning at 9:30-a.m.

The Society’s research program is the largest, private, not-for-profit source of funding for cancer research in the United States, second only to the federal government.

46 of the researchers we have financially supported have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. The Society’s funding has also helped play a part in every major research break-through in the past 50 years, including: the Pap Test, mammography, Gleevex, Tamoxifen, Herceptin, Gardacil, the first successful chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and the bone marrow transplant technique.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Buffalo City Tourism Foundation’s Executive Board met Friday (Mar 15, 2013) at the CSi Technology Center at Historic Franklin School.

The board heard requests from the earlier Grant Advisory Board meeting.

The Executive Board unanimously denied the request from the Frontier Village for a grant of $3,899, an entertainment expenditure for the annual two day Pioneer Days activities.

CORRECTION  Charlie Kourajian is not a board member but rather an Ex-Offico member of the city council and thus is not a voting member of the board. He said the BCTF Board needs to make suggestions to the Frontier Village board of new ideas, and said there seems to be a “riff” between the two boards.

BCTF Board member Beth Dewald said the Frontier Village needs more creative events, based on poor attendance at last year’s Pioneer Days activities.

BCTF Board Chairman Aldon Kollman added that the board has approved a significant amount of funding for Frontier Village, and that a new manager this year may come up with new ideas, and Nina Sneider says, the FVB can also reapply for grant funding later.

Grant requests approved by the board include:

$8,250 for advertising an equipment for the Drag Races to be held at Jamestown Regional Airport July 27, 28 this year.

$13,682 for summer staffing of six individuals at the National Buffalo Museum.

$1,680 for boardwalk sealant, and for a sign (cannon information) at $136.61.

Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund’s report included updates on the new web site progress, along with indicating that tourism will reach out for new partnerships in the community, regarding economic impact that tourism has.

Civic Center Manage Pam Fosse told the board that a planners guide is being readied for distribution, and pointed out that the Jehovah’s Witness convention will be coming back to Jamestown over the next 4-5 years. They indicated that Jamestown is centrally located, and noted Jamestown’s hospitality to convention-goers.

The Buffalo City Tourism Board went into closed Executive Session for discussion about the contract negotiations with the City of Jamestown.

The City Council’s Finance and Legal Committee on Tuesday (Mar 19, 2013) will meet in Special Session at 3-p.m. at City Hall to discuss with Buffalo City Tourism, a financing agreement, and entering into an enterprise agreement for financing

BISMARCK, N.D. (KCSi-T.V. News Mar 15, 2013) —North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm encourages homeowners and business owners to educate themselves about flood risks and flood insurance.

Property owners should be aware of their flood risk.

Floodplain maps can be found at www.msc.fema.gov.

Enter your address in the box on the left side of the screen. Floodplain Zone A has the highest risk for flooding; however, 25 percent of all flood insurance claims are paid out to policyholders in lower-risk zones.

Hamm says, “I encourage everyone to learn about the risks of living in a flood plain and how they can protect their property. Property owners in high risk areas may want to consider purchasing flood insurance.”

Flood insurance is offered and underwritten by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Several insurance companies in North Dakota write and service flood policies through the NFIP. Flood insurance policies kick in 30 days after purchase.

Hamm says, “Traditional homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flooding or sewer back up. Consumers should talk to their insurance agent about their policy’s limits and what other coverage can be purchased separately.”

For more information, contact your insurance agent or the NFIP at 1.800.638.6620 or www.floodsmart.gov. Consumers are also welcome to call the North Dakota Insurance Department at 1.800.247.0560 or visit www.nd.gov/ndins.

Chancellor Hamid Shirvani has been under fire in recent weeks for his management style. The state Senate has set aside money to buy out his contract and six former North Dakota college presidents have called for his ouster.

Dalrymple says it’s no secret that Shirvani is off to a rocky start, but the governor says it’s “a little discouraging at times” to see all the attention given to a personnel issue.

Lawmakers are debating proposals that would change the way higher education is governed, but Dalrymple says the current system is still the best.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Seven homes that have been bought out by the city of Fargo as part of its flood prevention efforts are up for auction.

The houses are valued between $300,000 and $500,000. Auction winners are responsible for moving the homes.

Reality agent Jim Lakoduk says  some bidders might be interested in salvaging parts of a home, rather than moving it.

The city expects to spend more than $23 million dollars on home buyouts this year. Fargo residents battled major flooding for three straight years, beginning with a record Red River crest in 2009.

The auction is scheduled at 1 p.m. Monday at Fargo City Hall.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Dickinson State University students have cataloged 1,000 creature specimens in the school’s natural history collection.

Shaughnessy says that when he came to DSU in 2007, he found a collection of specimens that had not been maintained after the retirement of the previous curator. He says only about 300 of the specimens were worth saving.

Students have added 700 specimens since then.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A man who spent half of 2012 commuting from Southern California to Watford City is working with his wife to manage two housing projects designed to reunite families in Oil Country.

Jake Walters says it was tough sleeping on an RV floor and touching base with his family via video-chat back home. He says he was separated from his wife Katie and children Julia and Drew for weeks at a time The family jumped at the chance to relocate to Watford full time.

The couple is helping launch the Fox Hills Village and Wolf Run Village to address North Dakota’s housing shortage. Katie Walters says she’s especially excited about Wolf Run, which will provide affordable housing for teachers, law enforcement and other public service employees.

State Tourism Director Sara Otte Coleman says not all of the new hotels have been built in the booming western oil patch. She says 11 hotels opened east of U.S. Highway 83 in 2012 or will open this year.

Coleman says travelers should still book rooms before they travel.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) – Kasey Kahne (kayn) took the checkered flag at Bristol Motor Speedway for the first time. It was the first short-track race of the Sprint Cup season. It’s Kahne’s 15th career win in NASCAR’s top circuit.

Kyle Busch finished second in the Food City 500. Brad Keselowski was third and takes over the series points lead as the only driver to open the season with four top-five finishes.

Tempers flared after the race when Joey Logano leaned inside the car window of former teammate Denny Hamlin to complain about Hamlin spinning him during the race. At the time, Logano was racing Jeff Gordon for the lead.
