Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Performing Arts Series at Jamestown College continues with a performance by Sonic Escape at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the Reiland Fine Arts Center’s DeNault Auditorium.

Tickets are $15, and $5 for all students and can be reserved through the Box Office. Call (701) 252-3467 ext. 5435, send e-mail to tickets@jc.edu, or visit the Jamestown College web site, www.jc.edu and click on “Community” and “Reiland Box Office.”

On Wednesday (Mar 20, 2013) Wayne Byers Show, on CSi Cable 2, Rick Walentine said, Sonic Escape is a trio of Juilliard graduates Maria Kaneko Millar (violin), Shawn Wyckoff (flute) and Michael Haas (cello) performing original works, arrangements and improvisations. Two members of the trio performed at the Jamestown Arts Center a few years ago.

From New York City, the virtuoso members of Sonic Escape are equally at home performing in classical music’s greatest halls – The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center – or traveling across the country in roles as diverse as fiddle-dancing in “Riverdance,” jamming with Beale Street blues bands, improvising with Native-American flute masters and playing rock clubs.

Sonic Escape is the recipient of two Canada Council for the Arts Composition Grants, a Puffin Foundation Award and a Chamber Music America Residency Grant.

The summer of 2012 marked the release of their debut album as well as the trio’s introduction to the folk festival circuit.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Mar 19, 2013) — Stutsman County will implement new maximum load limits for trucks when spring road restrictions lift this summer.

Townships will also be able to adopt the same restrictions, if they choose that option.

The policy is geared to reduce damage to roads, distributing loads on multiple axles.

It will allow trucks to carry larger loads, possibly reducing truck traffic.

The load limits will go into effect, possibly in June 2013, when spring road restrictions are eased, and will pertain to all county roads, unless previously restricted.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Due to Jamestown and Valley City Public School Districts needing to use snow days, in conjunction with storms creating hazardous conditions, both school districts cancelled classes March 4, 2013 and March 18, 2013.

Both Valley City and Jamestown Public School Districts will make up the March 4 snow day, on April 1, 2013. Both school districts will make up the March 18 snow day on May 24.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court’s Judicial Conduct Commission is looking into whether a state district court judge in Fargo violated judicial ethics.

The commission plans to hold a hearing on accusations against East Central District Judge Wickham Corwin. The hearing has not yet been scheduled.

A female court reporter has claimed that Corwin sexually harassed her and created a hostile work environment.

Corwin says the complaint is the result of a misunderstanding, and he’s asked that it be dismissed.

WHITE SHIELD, N.D. (AP) – The Three Affiliated Tribes has shut down construction of a landfill for oil waste on the Fort Berthold Reservation in northwestern North Dakota.

Owner Marvin Danks, of New Town, started construction at the site between Parshall and White Shield about 1  1/2 weeks ago. The   tribe issued a cease-and-desist order Monday, after tribal Environmental Director Edmund Baker said the project needed a permit and an environmental review.

Danks said his landfill will be environmentally responsible, and that he will do whatever the tribe requires.

Tribal members are being given until May 8 to comment. More than 200 people attended a Tuesday meeting in White Shield about the project. None spoke in support of it.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A social services official for the Spirit Lake Nation has pleaded not guilty in state district court to charges relating to an alleged domestic dispute.

Mark Little Owl is charged with felony theft, misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the alleged Aug. 21 incident at the Grand Forks apartment of his former wife.

Judge Sonja Clapp scheduled trial for April 25. Little Owl could face more than six years in prison if convicted.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has signed a student and faculty exchange agreement with the University of Bergen in Norway.

Officials say the agreement centers on research related to oil development. Norway is one of the world’s leading oil producers, and North Dakota is the second-largest oil-producing U.S. state, behind Texas.

UND already has a number of academic and cultural links to Norway, including an exchange program with the American College of Norway in Moss, Norway. UND’s Chester Fritz Library also is home to a large collection of Norwegian genealogical, cultural and geographical information.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate has passed a huge spending bill to fund the government through the end of September, preventing a shutdown at the end of the month. A vote Thursday in the House would send the measure to President Barack Obama for his signature. It includes funding for the day-to-day operating budgets of every Cabinet agency, and another $87 billion for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

JERUSALEM (AP) – President Barack Obama says the United States will do what is necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb. He’s offering assurances to Israel Wednesday that the United States will stand behind its Mideast ally. Obama arrived in Israel  for his first visit there as president.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The former mayor of the tiny California city of Bell has been convicted on five charges in a massive corruption case against him and five other ex-elected officials. Former Mayor Oscar Hernandez and City Council members were charged with misappropriating funds by paying themselves enormous salaries — in a city where one out of four residents live below the poverty line.

NEW YORK (AP) – Stocks have been holding onto their earlier gains, and even building on them, after the Federal Reserve stood by its plan to continue with aggressive measures to boost the economy. In its policy statement after a two-day meeting, the Fed said the U.S. economy has strengthened after pausing late last year, but still needs the support of the central bank. It says it plans to keep short-term interest rates at record lows, at least until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent from the current 7.7 percent.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Banks in the Mediterranean island country of Cyprus will remain closed for two more days, as officials try to find a new plan to avoid bankruptcy. The country’s parliament this week rejected a plan under which the government would take a portion of bank deposits. The money is needed to shore up the country’s ailing banks and government finances. The banks were closed in order to avoid a run.

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago police are trying to bring down the city’s homicide rate by flooding some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods with officers working overtime. For about seven weeks, at least a couple of hundred extra officers have been sent out each night — and during that time, there have been 23 homicides in the city. That’s less than half the total from the same period a year ago. But it’s an enormous expense for a financially-strapped city.
