Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — I-94 between Valley City and Jamestown is slippery in spots in the north lanes due to snow drifting across and sticking to the surface.

Stutsman County Sheriff Department was at an accident in the eastbound lane of I94 after 5pm Sunday March 24, 2013, just east of mile marker 266, six miles east of Jamestown.

A pickup truck was on its top in the passing lane of eastbound I94 and another vehicle was in the median.

Law enforcement and ambulance personnel were on the scene.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) Temple Baptist Church in Jamestown will present “The Passion Play,” written by Debbie Kercher, with performances March 28-March 31,2013, at 7-p.m., nightly, with the church located at 1200 12th Avenue, Northeast, near Jamestown High School.

Pastor Randy Jaspers says, the play has 8 different scenes… 13 songs… and over 70 cast members.

“The Passion Play,” is a musical drama depicting the last week of Jesus’ life.

There is no charge for the performance and no reserved seating.

This is the 7th time the church has offered the play, the first in its new facility.

He invites the community to “See, feel and hear the good news of God’s greatest gift. Bring a friend.”

The play was written by Debbie Kercher in the summer of 2000.

The first time the play was offered was in 2001 at TBC’s former home on 4th Avenue NW.

The response was overwhelming.

Since that initial performance the church has offered the play three times at the Reiland Fine Arts Center and twice at the Jamestown High School Theatre.

The play is a mix of drama and contemporary Christian music. Most of the dialogue comes directly from the Bible.

Over the years the play has remained much the same, with some adjustments in music and enhanced scenery.

The biggest change is in the personnel, most of whom call TBC their home.

The last time TBC offered the Passion Play was in 2009, prior to the construction of its present facility in NE Jamestown.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota-based Farm Rescue organization is getting a grant of nearly $348,000 from a charitable trust established by the late hotel and real estate baroness Leona Helmsley.

The nonprofit Farm Rescue provides planting and harvesting help free of charge to farm families in five states who have experienced a major illness, injury or disaster. Officials say the grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust will be used for equipment purchases and general operations.

Farm Rescue founder and President Bill Gross says it’s the largest grant the nonprofit has received since it began operations in 2006.

Farm Rescue has helped more than 200 farm families in the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Police arrested a Grand Forks man after he allegedly fired a shotgun during an early-morning fight.

Authorities say there were no apparent injuries in the incident, which happened about 4 a.m. Saturday.

The 25-year-old suspect faces multiple charges, including reckless endangerment, obstruction, fleeing police and discharging a firearm in city limits.

Police say the suspect and others fled the scene by the time officers arrived. Authorities were able to track down the suspect’s vehicle with help from U.S. Border Patrol agents.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Devils Lake police say they arrested a man for shoplifting twice on the same day and in the same store.

Authorities say the 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning after he shoplifted several cans of energy drink and some beef jerky from a grocery store. The man was later released on bail, and police say he returned to the store that afternoon and stole another energy drink.

The  man faces several misdemeanor charges.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Some pastors in a northwestern North Dakota city are asking that guns be allowed in churches.

The  group plans to submit a petition this week to Williston city commissioners that would give churches the option of allowing concealed weapons.

The Rev. Will Page, associate professor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, says he’s worried that people with evil intentions may target churches because they know members of the congregation are not armed.

The group says the petition is motivated by mass shootings elsewhere and not the state’s oil boom.

The state Legislature is considering allowing guns in churches and other places.

Sen. Stan Lyson, of Williston, a former Williams County sheriff, says he doesn’t believe that allowing concealed weapons in church or other places improves safety.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says residents in the Fargo area won’t have to worry about getting enough money from the state to help with an expected spring flood.

Dalrymple on Monday met with federal, state and local officials to outline plans to tackle high water from the Red River and its tributaries.

The governor says Fargo has “the best flood-fighting team in the United States.”

The National Weather Service says the river has a 50-50 chance of reaching 38 feet in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., which would be 20 feet above flood stage.

It would be the fourth major flood in five years for Fargo-Moorhead residents.

Fargo officials plan to open an emergency operations center on April 2. Volunteers will begin filling sandbags on April 3.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven says he expects a funding bill that includes a Red River flood diversion project to reach the Senate floor in April or May.

Hoeven was in Fargo Monday at a meeting of federal, state and local officials who are making plans to protect Fargo and Cass County against spring flooding along the Red River and its tributaries.

The White House has signed off on a 36-mile diversion channel that would move water around Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., but the nearly $2 billion project needs approval from Congress.

Hoeven says he believes the project will pass the Senate. Then it will go to the House.

The National Weather Service is predicting the fourth major flood in five years for the Fargo-Moorhead area.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Residents near Devils Lake in northeastern North Dakota fear that last year’s progress in gaining back land from the lake could be lost this year.

The latest flood outlook from the National Weather Service gives about a 25 percent chance the lake will surpass its record elevation of 1,454.3 feet above sea level, set in June 2011.

That would wipe out last year’s 3-foot drop that saw about 30,000 acres of land resurface.

Jeff Frith, manager of the basin’s joint water resource district, says  the forecast “takes away the optimism we had last year.”

Devils Lake rose about 32 feet in the wet cycle between 1992 and 2011. The lake quadrupled in size.

A levee system protects the city of Devils Lake.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Capitol will be abuzz this week with anticipation over what Gov. Jack Dalrymple will do with a package of anti-abortion measures approved by both chambers that would make North Dakota the most restrictive state in the U.S. to get the procedure.

House members voted on four abortion measures Friday, rejecting one that would define in state law that life begins at conception. Representatives approved a resolution that would let voters put the definition into the state constitution.

Other passed bills would ban abortions after 20 weeks based on the disputed premise that fetuses feel pain at that point; require abortion doctors to be physicians with hospital-admitting privileges; ban abortions as early as six weeks, or when a fetal heartbeat is detected, and ban abortions because of genetic defects.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Abortion-rights activists plan rallies in North Dakota’s biggest cities on Monday to protest a package of measures that would give the state the toughest abortion restrictions in the nation.

The newly formed Stand Up For Women North Dakota plans rallies in Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot and at the state Capitol in Bismarck.

Organizer Robin Nelson of Fargo says several hundred people are expected at the rallies. She says the intent is to show solidarity for women’s rights issues.

The Legislature has passed several anti-abortion measures this session. Most are awaiting the signature of Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who hasn’t yet indicated whether he supports the laws.

A Dalrymple spokesman says the governor’s office is fielding a large number of calls both supporting and protesting the measures.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Some Fargo business owners are giving gift cards to employees who lost their jobs when one of the city’s largest employers shut down last week.

PRACS Institute had 316 workers. The company conducted research for the drug, dermatology and cosmetic industries through inpatient and outpatient studies.

Maxwell’s restaurant and Artisan Home Furnishings each offered $50 gift cards to PRACS employees.

Workers at the Fargo company say they were told last week that their jobs were terminated and the firm is headed for bankruptcy.

PRACS Institute founder James Carlson says he is trying to salvage the company, but gave no details.

The company had operated in Fargo for three decades.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A New Leipzig teenager will represent North Dakota in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May.

Thirteen-year-old Taylor Roehl outlasted nearly 100 other spellers to win the state bee last Friday. She correctly spelled her final word, “debenture (dih-BEHN’-chur),” to beat Noah Heuchert, of St. Thomas.

Last year’s state winner, Ty Korsmo, finished third this year.

In world and national news…

KABUL (AP) – Secretary of State John Kerry has dropped in unannounced in Afghanistan. The 24-hour stop includes a meeting with President Hamid Karzai amid concerns Karzai may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with anti-American rhetoric.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court hears arguments today in a case pitting the government against drug makers over the practice of paying to delay the release of much cheaper generic drugs. Federal regulators argue these deals deny American consumers, usually for years, steep price declines that can top 90 percent. The pharmaceutical companies say they need the extra money they make to recover the billions they spend on research. Both Big Pharma and generic makers say the end result is often earlier generic releases.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Spring is buried under winter in parts of the Midwest and the storm continues to move east. The National Weather Service has issued storm warnings and advisories for as far east as Pennsylvania, and officials are blaming two deaths in separate crashes in Kansas and Missouri on snow-slicked roads.

TOKYO (AP) – Nations that account for nearly a third of the world economy are about to begin talks about a free trade deal. Japan and the European Union agreed today to begin negotiations next month. Among the likely beneficiaries of free trade are Japan’s giant manufacturing exporters such as Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker. Japanese consumers may also have much to gain with access to cheaper imports.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Lawmakers in Cyprus say it’s painful, but a bailout deal reached today is better than the bankruptcy alternative. Cyprus agreed early today to slash its oversize banking sector and make large account holders take losses to help pay to secure a last-minute, $13 billion bailout. Banks have been closed for more than a week in Cyprus.
