BRAMPTON, N.D. (AP) – A 22-year-old man from Brampton is in custody in what authorities say was a hit-and-run death in southeastern North Dakota over the weekend.
The Highway Patrol report says a truck driven by 22-year-old Dakota Sutton of Brampton, North Dakota hit 28-year-old Reavis Dandridge on a rural, gravel road in Sargent County about 3 a.m. Sunday. Dandridge was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Oakes.
The driver of the pickup was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are investigating the theft of about 26,000 pounds of copper valued at $112,000 from a Fargo business over the weekend.
The burglary was reported at Dakota Supply Group. It is the latest in a string of high-value copper thefts in the Fargo-Moorhead area in recent months.
Police also are investigating what type of truck would be needed to transport nearly 13 tons of copper and are working with state and federal authorities to get the word out about the stolen metal.
Copper is a target for thieves because it can bring high prices when sold as scrap metal.
HUDSON, Wis. (AP) – A psychiatrist has testified that a man who admitted killing his three young daughters in western Wisconsin is not insane.
Dr. Ralph Baker testified for the prosecution Monday as the second week of Aaron Schaffhausen’s insanity trial got underway.
Baker spent nearly four hours interviewing Schaffhausen. Baker told jurors he believes that Schaffhausen has major depression disorder but was not insane the day he killed 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia at their house in River Falls last July.
Baker says Schaffhausen told him what happened at the house was a “spur of the moment thing.”
Schaffhausen told Baker he tried to help Cecilia find her shoes, and the next thing he knew, he had his hands on her neck and was strangling her.
HUDSON, Wis. (AP) – Security will be tighter at the St. Croix (kroy) County courthouse where jurors will decide whether a North Dakota man was sane when he killed his three young daughters.
A co-worker of Aaron Schaffhausen has been arrested on possible charges of threatening a witness. Authorities say the arrest stemmed from an incident Friday, the same day there was a security issue at the St. Croix County Government Center.
The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says employees and visitors were being screened Monday as they enter the courthouse. Schaffhausen’s sanity trial is in its second week.
Schaffhausen has pleaded guilty to killing 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia at their house in River Falls last July.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The founder of Farm Rescue has launched a separate foundation to further his cause of helping farmers stricken by major illnesses, ailments or disasters.
Farm Rescue helps farmers in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and eastern Montana with planting and harvesting. Founder and CEO Bill Gross says the new Farm Rescue Foundation will help farmers in the recovery process with specialized equipment, or with some farm tasks they’re unable to do.
Langdon farmer Brett Kakela (KAK’-uh-luh) is recovering from a stroke. The foundation helped him get equipment that will enable him to unload grain without having to climb out of his truck. He says he appreciates the help.
The foundation aims to help about 20 farmers in North Dakota this spring and expand to the other four states this fall.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s oil tax fund is nearing $1 billion in assets.
The Legacy Fund gets 30 percent of the state’s oil tax collections. None of the money can be spent until 2017, and even then it takes a two-thirds vote of the Legislature to dip into it.
March deposits were about $87 million. That brings the fund’s total to $927 million.
Oil revenue began gushing into the fund only since September 2011. Analysts initially estimated it would have a $618 million balance when the state’s current two-year budget period ends on June 30.
Revenue from the fund has been invested mostly in short-term, low-risk U.S bonds. The Legacy Fund’s seven-member advisory board is recommending that half of the fund’s assets be shifted to the stock market and other investments.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Senate has endorsed a measure aimed at curbing the oil industry’s practice wasting natural gas at oil wells.
The Senate voted to 46-1 Monday. North Dakota’s House approved the bill in February.
Oil companies in North Dakota can burn off or flare natural gas for a year without paying taxes or royalties on it.
If signed into law, companies would have only six months to connect to the pipeline. Companies also could move the gas by other methods use it for such things as electrical generation. Companies also would get tax breaks for capturing the gas.
More than 30 percent of the state’s gas production is being flared because development of the pipelines and processing facilities needed to handle it has not kept pace with production.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Many areas across North Dakota are still experiencing average or above-average snow depths, though weekend rain did reduce some snow piles.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture say in its weekly crop report that agricultural activities for the week included fertilizer applications, hauling grain to market, and calving and lambing.
Calving was 56 percent complete, while lambing was 70 percent.
Shearing was 83 percent complete, compared to 80 percent the week before.
Cattle and calf conditions were rated 0 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 68 percent good and 10 percent excellent.
Sheep and lamb conditions were rated 0 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 68 percent good and 9 percent excellent.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo says he offers “congratulations, prayers and friendship” to the new bishop.
Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor John Folda of the Diocese of Lincoln in Nebraska as the new bishop in Fargo. Folda will succeed Samuel Aquila (ah-KWIHL’-ah), who left as Fargo bishop last June to become archbishop of the Archdiocese of Denver.
Aquila says in a statement that Folda “is a man of deep faith, warm leadership, and unwavering fidelity to the teachings of the Church.”

The plea came just before the woman’s trial was set to begin. Prosecutors agreed to drop four other felony counts. The stepmother would have faced up to 55 years in prison if she’d been convicted of all six charges. She now faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.
NEW YORK (AP) – Former child star Annette Funicello has died at the age of 70. She was a cute and perky Mousketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the 1950s, and then teamed with Frankie Avalon on a string of fun-in-the-sun movies in the 1960s with names like “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “Bikini Beach.” Avalon recalls that Funicello never realized how beloved she was by fans.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Pennsylvania’s governor is ordering the flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff, in honor of a Philadelphia firefighter who died in the line of duty. Capt. Michael Goodwin fell from the roof of a three-story building when the roof collapsed beneath him as he battled a fire Saturday night. Fire officials say he’s being promoted, after his death, to the rank of battalion chief — boosting the benefits his family will get.
