Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to a house fire about 10-p.m. Tuesday (Jul 31, 2012), in Northwest Jamestown.
Lt. Sheldon Mohr says the fire at 301 4th Avenue Northwest caused extensive damage to the second floor interior of the home. No dollar estimate was available.
No other structures were involved.
No injuries were reported, as all occupants escaped the house.
Seven units of the city fire department were on the scene for almost two hours, and included 30 fire fighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Buffalo Valley Red Cross Chapter, and Jamestown Salvation Army, gave assistance to the family, along with temporary lodging.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Council will attend an August 7, 2012 Stutsman County Commission meeting, at the courthouse, at 4-p.m. to hear a presentation by Jail Consultant, David Prachar.
He will give his findings and analysis of staffing and operations of the Stutsman County Law Enforcement Center.
The presentation is expected to last about three hours.
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man convicted of
shooting and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher
will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Judge James Hovey sentenced Daniel Wacht on Wednesday to life in
prison with no parole.
Wacht’s attorney had asked for life with the possibility of parole.
Wacht declined to speak at the sentencing.
A jury in April found Wacht guilty of murder in the death of
54-year-old Kurt Johnson.
Prosecutors say Wacht killed Johnson to prove his worth to a white supremacist group.
Johnson was last seen alive outside a Cooperstown bar on New
Year’s Eve 2010.
His severed head was found in a crawl space in Wacht’s basement. His body has not been found.
Korwin Johnson says his brother’s killing was a “senseless,
brutal crime.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm has revoked the license of a Bismarck insurance agent facing criminal charges.
Brent Kitzan faces 27 felony counts relating to alleged theft,
insurance fraud and securities fraud between 2003 and 2011.
Hamm late last year had ordered Kitzan to stop doing business in the
state.
Court documents do not list an attorney for Kitzan, and his home
telephone number has been disconnected.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Securities Commissioner Karen Tyler has ordered a Fargo-based company and its agent to stop doing securities business in the state.
Tyler says Freedom USA Investing LLC has offered to sell unregistered securities.
She also says the company is not registered with her department and James Young is not a registered securities agent.
Young says the problems arose from a misunderstanding over advertising on a company website page and that the page has been removed.
He says the company is honest and straightforward.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers
pulled more than 50 trucks off the road and issued more than $8,000
in fines during a recent enforcement effort in the western oil
patch.
Sgt. Mitch Rumple says the 12-person inspection team found nearly 500 violations during the effort late last week.
Rumple says he was surprised by the number of truck drivers who
weren’t aware they needed a higher-class license. And about two
dozen trucks were overweight.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are going through a
sheaf of ideas to cut local property taxes.
Some proposed bills would exempt part of a home’s value from
property tax.
Some would give bigger exemptions to people who are older than 65.
And others would give property tax breaks only to older North Dakotans.
The Legislature’s interim Taxation Committee is going through
the bills Wednesday.
Minot state Sen. David Hogue (hohg) is the committee’s chairman.
He says the panel will be making recommendations later about which
proposals to support in the Legislature.
The bills that include partial property tax exemptions would
require homeowners to file a form every year.
Local tax assessors don’t like that idea. Minot city assessor
Kevin Ternes (TUR’-ness) says annual filings would be a hassle for
homeowners.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The new chancellor of the North Dakota
University System has replaced the system’s chief academic officer
and says other top-level personnel changes might be coming.
Chancellor Hamid Shirvani (HAH’-mihd shur-VAH’-nee) told state
lawmakers on Tuesday that Michel (MY’-kuhl) Hillman has been
appointed to work for Bismarck State College.
Hillman had been the university system’s vice chancellor for academic and student affairs.
Shirvani he says Hillman was reappointed not because of his job performance but because Shirvani thought a change was needed.
Hillman is on vacation and unavailable for comment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Japan’s ambassador to the United States
says he’s glad North Dakotans don’t sound like they do in the movie
“Fargo.”
In a visit to Bismarck on Tuesday, Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki
tried to blend in by singing the cowboy folk song “Red River
Valley.”
Fujisaki held a news conference Tuesday with Gov. Jack
Dalrymple.
They talked about North Dakota’s chances for expanded trade with Japan.
Dalrymple is from eastern North Dakota’s Red River Valley.
The ambassador says that inspired him to try singing the folk song. He
got laughs and some applause.
Fujisaki says his first North Dakota impressions came from the
movie “Fargo.”
The movie makes fun of local speech patterns.
Fujisaki says when he asked North Dakotans about the movie, they pointed out it was filmed in Minnesota.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve says the economy is losing
strength. And it’s repeating a pledge to take further steps if the
job market doesn’t show sustained improvement.
The Fed took no new action after its two-day policy meeting.
But it acknowledged that economic activity had slowed over the first half of the year, unemployment remains elevated and consumer spending has weakened.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Mitt Romney’s campaign is finalizing plans for
a multistate bus tour to begin late next week.
The Republican presidential candidate is expected to visit Virginia, North
Carolina and Florida, although the schedule may change in the
coming days.
Romney returned from a bumpy overseas trip late Tuesday.
He’s spending today in meetings at his Boston campaign headquarters.
Next week’s bus tour could be part of the rollout for a running mate.
Republican officials are expecting that announcement any day.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) – Emails submitted by California
prosecutors indicate that a university professor was considering
getting a dozen machine guns and shooting at least 200 students at
a high school — the school attended by his son before he committed
suicide.
The boy had been disciplined by school officials shortly before he took his own life in March.
Emails filed in court show that Rainer Reinscheid wrote about wanting to shoot administrators at the high school before killing himself.
He’s already behind bars on arson charges related to a series of small fires.
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) – Maryland prosecutors say a man
accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace and identifying
himself as “a joker” has been charged with misdemeanor telephone
misuse.
The charge could bring up to three years in prison.
Neil Prescott was taken into custody last Friday after the threats were
reported to police.
He has been receiving an emergency psychiatric evaluation at a hospital.
Police say they found ammunition and about two dozen weapons, including semi-automatic rifles and pistols, in his apartment.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A publicist for Cuba Gooding Jr. says the
actor has met with New Orleans police, and is working to try to
resolve what the publicist calls a “misunderstanding.”
He was issued a court summons after a New Orleans bartender said he had
pushed her.
The bartender said Gooding became upset after patrons started asking him to pose for pictures with them. He’s in New Orleans to film a movie.
