GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Marshals Service says no foul play is suspected in the death of a deputy marshal who was found dead in his vehicle at a Grand Forks intersection.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the deputy who was found in a residential neighborhood Wednesday morning. U.S. Marshal Paul Ward says an autopsy is planned.

ROLLA, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have located a man who went

missing from an adult music camp at the International Peace Garden.

Rolette County Sheriff Rod Trottier says 41-year-old Russell

Gillie was found unharmed Wednesday night about 13 miles from the

gardens that straddle the U.S.-Canada border north of Dunseith.

Gillie had been reported missing on Tuesday.

The case is still being investigated but Trottier says

authorities do not believe anyone else was involved in Gillie’s

disappearance.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A judge has struck guilty pleas for a

former Bismarck grade school music teacher who acknowledged having sex with a 17-year-old girl.

John Krueger pleaded guilty in May to three felony charges of corruption or solicitation of a minor.

Judge Donald Jorgensen has ordered the pleas be withdrawn because the attorneys in the case did not agree on changes to a sentencing recommendation.

He will be sentenced later. He faces up to five years in prison on each charge.

Krueger was a former instrumental music director at three

Bismarck Roman Catholic schools. During an earlier court

appearance, he acknowledged he’d had sexual contact with the girl

at a motel, a home and a Bismarck radio station.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon announced Wednesday that 32-year-old Daniel Chase pleaded guilty to the charge in U.S. District Court.

Prosecutors say Chase got into an argument with another person in June 2010 near Lake Sakakawea (suh-kah-kuh-WEE’-uh). He allegedly used his hands and feet to beat the victim.

The victim suffered several injuries, including a broken tooth, bruising and internal abdominal surgeries which required surgery.

Chase faces up 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced November 19th.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers pulled more than 50 trucks off the road and issued more than $8,000 in fines during a recent enforcement effort in the western oil patch.

The 12-person inspection team found nearly 500 violations during the effort late last week.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Lawton farmer who has been at odds

with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over wetlands has filed a

federal complaint asking for clarification about his property.

Alvin Peterson was convicted twice of illegally draining

wetlands. He was fined $4,000 in 2004 and $10,000 in 2008.

Peterson claimed in those cases the wetlands didn’t exist when the easement was signed in 1966.

Peterson says in a court document filed earlier this week that the contract is vague and he’s not sure which property on his more than 1,500-acre Walsh County land is under easement.

He says he is unable to drain any of his land “without

reasonable fear and apprehension” that he would face criminal

penalties.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – More than half of U.S. counties now are classified by the federal government as natural disaster areas mostly because of the drought.

The U.S. Agriculture Department on Wednesday added 218 counties in a dozen states as disaster areas. That brings this year’s total to 1,584 in 32 states, more than 90 percent of them because of the drought.

The latest additions make drought-affected farmers and ranchers eligible for federal aid including emergency loans.

The USDA also announced ranchers may access some 3.8 million acres of conservation land for haying and grazing, and crop insurance companies have agreed to provide farmers a penalty-free grace period on insurance premiums in 2012.

Counties included in the announcement are in South Dakota and Wyoming.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Supporters of a total ban on smoking in bars and other North Dakota workplaces say the issue will be on the ballot in November.

Backers of a voter anti-tobacco initiative say they’re turning in their petitions to Secretary of State Al Jaeger on Thursday. They say they have more than the minimum of 13,500 names needed to assure a public vote.

North Dakota already prohibits smoking in most public places. The initiative goes further. It would ban smoking in bars, motels, tobacco shops and private nursing home rooms.

The measure sets up a penalty system for violations and says bar owners who allow smoking could have their liquor licenses revoked.

If the petitions have enough names, the anti-tobacco proposal will be listed as Measure 3 on the November ballot.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Former University of North Dakota basketball standout Jerome Beasley is in trouble again for allegedly not paying child support.

The 32-year-old Beasley is in custody in Grand Forks, accused of owing more than $100,000 in child support. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained an attorney.

Beasley was jailed in November 2010 for owing more than $6,650 in support.

Beasley played for UND in the early 2000s before moving on to a brief NBA career and then stints with the Dakota Wizards and the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA Development League.

He was named the NCAA Division II player of the year his senior season at UND.

Ballpark in Daytona Beach after a minor league umpire ejected the

music DJ for playing “Three Blind Mice” during the game.

The ejection came in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game

Cubs manager Brian Harper was arguing a call at first base when he heard home plate umpire Mario Seneca bellow “you’re out.”

Harper says he thought he was being kicked out of the game.

Instead, the umpire ejected the music man.

The public address system at the stadium was shut down for the rest of the game.

Fans took it upon themselves to announce players as they approached the plate.

The Cubs won 2-1.
