BISMARCK, N.D. (AP & KCSi-T.V. News) A Jamestown native who finished the Boston Marathon minutes before two bombs exploded says she is in disbelief and called the event “surreal.”
Julie Jeske was about two blocks away getting food when two bombs exploded in the packed streets near the finish line Monday. At least three people were killed and scores of others were injured.
Jeske says she could see the smoke billowing out but tried to stay away so that emergency responders could attend to the injured.
Jeske who now lives in Bismarck with her husband Charlie was one of 17 runners from the Capitol City competing in the race. This was her fourth time running the Boston Marathon.
She said it was frustrating not being able to call her husband and other family members once the cell phone circuits were jammed or overloaded minutes after the explosions in downtown Boston. Jeske flew back to Bismarck Tuesday to reunite with her family
Other former Jamestown residents in the marathon included, Justin Schweitzer, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Maggie Conlon.Lief Rasmussen, now of Fargo, says that he and the others in his group are safe.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a one vehicle rollover accident on Monday (Apr 15, 2013) about 9:15 p.m., injured a Poplar, Montana man.
The reports says a van operated by 49 year old Guy Bateman was westbound on I-94 about four miles west of Valley City, when the vehicle, with cruise control engaged at 65 mph slid on the ice and compacted snow. He over-corrected the skid, and the vehicle entered the median sideways, and overturned, coming to rest on the passenger side, facing south in the left lane on the eastbound travel lanes.
Bateman was hospitalized in Valley City for treatment.
The report says he was wearing a seat belt.
Assisting the NDHP were the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, Barnes County Ambulance Service, and Barnes County Crash and Rescue.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple has signed legislation to expand Medicaid to cover more uninsured residents of North Dakota.
North Dakota’s Medicaid program now covers about 65,000 people a month. Dalrymple’s endorsement on Tuesday means an additional 20,000 people – mostly adults without children – would be added to the program.
Medicaid expansion is a component of the federal Affordable Care Act championed by President Barack Obama
North Dakota’s Republican-led Legislature reluctantly voted last week to expand Medicaid and sent the bill to the governor.
GOP lawmakers in both chambers said they felt forced to vote to expand Medicaid because of the added to costs residents if they didn’t.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The medical director of North Dakota’s lone abortion clinic says a bill passed in the 2011 Legislature would end the practice of medication abortions and leave pregnant women with “less choice.”
The Red River Women’s Clinic of Fargo is challenging the law that bans the use of a drug that induces abortions. Judge Wickham Corwin has blocked the legislation from taking effect and is presiding over a civil trial that began Tuesday.
Clinic medical director Kathryn Eggleston testified that the clinic began offering medication abortions in 2007 because women demanded it. She says patients wanted a separate option to surgical abortion.
The challenge could be the first of many abortion rights lawsuits in the state. Lawmakers this session have passed the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota House has endorsed a measure aimed at curbing the oil industry’s practice of wasting natural gas at oil wells.
The House voted 93-0 Tuesday to allow tax cuts on natural gas if it’s collected and used for agricultural, industrial or railroad purposes. North Dakota’s Senate approved the measure earlier.
More than 30 percent of the state’s gas production is being flared because development of the pipelines and processing facilities needed to handle it has not kept pace with production.
Officials say about $4 billion in infrastructure improvements have been built in North Dakota to capture natural gas and move it to market, but another $4 billion in gathering systems is needed to keep pace with the state’s record oil production.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Washington state man faces numerous charges after a police chase in Williston that ended in a fiery crash.

Lopez is charged with three misdemeanors and two felony charges, including reckless endangerment. Court documents do not list an attorney for him. He is due in court on May 14 and could enter pleas at that time.
HUDSON, Wis. (AP) – A psychiatrist who evaluated a man accused of killing his three Wisconsin daughters testified the father was mentally aware of his criminal actions.
Dr. Erik Knudson testified Monday as the sanity trial for Aaron Schaffhausen entered its third week in St. Croix County. Knudson, testifying for the prosecution, said that after Schaffhausen killed the girls, he drove around aimlessly, discarding items from his car that could possibly connect him to the crime. KSTP-TV reports the psychiatrist says Schaffhausen’s action shows he was “capable of conforming his conduct.”
Aaron Schaffhausen has pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree intentional homicide, but he maintains he’s not responsible for killing 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie, and 5-year-old Cecilia because of a mental illness. Jurors will determine his sanity.
Closing arguments are scheduled Tuesday.
