GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Marshals Service says no foul play is suspected in the death of a deputy marshal who was found dead in his vehicle in a Grand Forks parking lot.

Police Chief John Packett identified the man as 46-year-old Robert Wood. He was found dead in a residential neighborhood Wednesday morning.

U.S. Marshal Paul Ward says an autopsy is planned but results aren’t likely to be released for weeks.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that Wood served in the Air Force before joining the Marshals Service. He was transferred from Washington, D.C., to Grand Forks in 1994.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Democratic candidate for North Dakota’s Public Service Commission says two Republican commissioners have been “flouting the spirit” of the state’s anti-bribery law.

Brad Crabtree says Republican commissioners Brian Kalk and Kevin Cramer have taken campaign contributions from companies they regulate.

Crabtree says the money came in when Kalk and Cramer made decisions favoring the companies.

Kalk says his campaign donations are legal and Crabtree’s bribery allegations are “ridiculous.”

Cramer says Crabtree won’t file a bribery complaint himself because he knows there’s nothing to it.

At a Thursday news conference in Bismarck, Crabtree says public service commissioners should have to separately disclose any donations they get from companies they regulate.

Crabtree says the commissioners should excuse themselves from making decisions on companies that are campaign supporters.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Backers of a complete smoking ban in bars
and other North Dakota workplaces say they have enough petition
signatures to put the issue to a vote.
The anti-smoking initiative is one of six measures that could be
on the November ballot this fall. If it qualifies, it will be
listed as Measure 3.
Supporters of the smoking ban turned in more than 21,000
signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office Thursday.

They need only about 13,500 names to get on the ballot.
West Fargo respiratory therapist Chelsey Matter is the
campaign’s chairwoman.

She says volunteers gathered names in every
county, and there appears to be widespread support for the
workplace smoking ban.
North Dakota already prohibits smoking in most enclosed public
places, but the proposed new law is tougher.

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – The Three Affiliated Tribes wants to offer
riverboat gambling on Lake Sakakawea.
The North Dakota tribe’s gambling compact with the state expires
at the end of the year.

Tribal Chairman Tex Hall wants riverboat gambling added to the next compact. He says it could be another opportunity for the tribally owned 4 Bears Casino west of New Town.
An attorney for Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the Spirit Lake
Nation’s gambling compact allows that tribe to conduct gambling on
Devils Lake, though the tribe hasn’t done it yet.
A draft of a new compact for the Three Affiliated Tribes would
allow riverboat gambling within the boundaries of the Fort Berthold
Reservation.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The starting running back for North Dakota
State University is requesting jury trials in state district court
on two charges of driving with a suspended license.
The Forum newspaper reports that Sam Ojuri was stopped by police
on June 5 and July 14. Both of the charges against him are
misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Ojuri has run into trouble in the past. The junior from
Barrington, Ill., pleaded guilty in January to an alcohol offense
and was fined $100.

He was suspended from the team in spring 2010
for an undisclosed violation of team rules and reinstated in
January 2011.
NDSU is the defending NCAA Football Championship Subdivision
champion.

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University is the
preseason pick to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference
title.
The Bison are the defending NCAA Football Championship
Subdivision champions.

They shared the conference title last season
with Northern Iowa, which is second in the preseason poll conducted
by league coaches, media and sports information directors.
NDSU returns six starters on offense and seven on defense from a
team that finished 14-1. The Bison received 37 of 38 first-place
votes in the preseason poll. The other went to Illinois State.
Youngstown State is third in the poll, Illinois State fourth and
Indiana State fifth.
The rest of the top ten is South Dakota State, Southern
Illinois, South Dakota, Western Illinois and Missouri State.

LONDON (AP) – She’s known at “The Flying Squirrel,” but now
Gabby Douglas will also be known as Olympic champ.

Two days after she and her “Fierce Five” teammates captured the team gold medal in gymnastics, Douglas has won the women’s all-around title in
London.

She brought the house down with an energetic floor routine
on the way to a victory over Russia’s Viktoria Komova.

In world and national news…

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) – Mitt Romney is giving President Barack
Obama’s economic policies a failing grade.

And he’s promising to create 12 million jobs in his first four years in office.

Romney told a Denver-area rally that his Democratic opponent has
disappointed the nation.

He shared a report card giving Obama poor
marks on job creation, foreclosures and American incomes.

The former Massachusetts governor is also promising to make North
America energy independent in eight years.

Romney is campaigning across Colorado on his first day back on the campaign trail after a bumpy overseas trip.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Senate Democrats have defeated a Republican
effort to force defense contractors to send out notices of possible
layoffs just four days before the election.

Democrats said the move was politically driven — and also, purely speculative, since it’s still not known if and where $110 billion in automatic cuts might occur.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal officials say they are investigating
what happened when three commuter jets flew too close to one
another near Washington.

But they say none of three planes ever were on a collision course.

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration told reporters today that none of the planes was ever headed directly for one of the others. Officials blame a miscommunication among controllers for Tuesday’s incident.

NEW YORK (AP) – NBC says of all the Olympic sports it is airing
on its cable networks, the one that has proven most popular with
viewers is archery — drawing even better ratings than basketball.

A network official says the interest may be due in part to the
popularity of “The Hunger Games” getting young people interested
in bows and arrows.

And American archer Brady Ellison is also a big draw.
