Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called out about 3:30 p.m., on Monday (Apr 29, 2013), to a grass fire located near 8065 51 1/2 Street Southeast, near Millarton.

About five acres of land was burning and was spreading, toward a structure.

No buildings were damaged.

No injuries were reported.

The fire may have started as the land owner was cutting tall grass, and a spark from the lawnmower’s muffler started dry grass on fire.

Four units and 10 members of the Jamestown Rural Fire Department responded, to the call.

 

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Apr 29, 2013) — Bald Hill Dam Manager, Rich Schueneman says if precipitation in the Sheyenne River basin in the next three weeks is not significant, the Corps of Engineers will begin releasing 2,000 from the dam on Sunday or Monday May 5,6, 2013.

On Monday Schueneman said as of now its unlikely that river levels will affect Barnes County bridges.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Spring snow melt in the James River Basin has led to water level increases at Pipestem and Jamestown Reservoirs.

Pipestem Dam Manager Bob Martin says, Pipestem Reservoir levels went up seven feet over the weekend, but was still not as large of an increase as anticipated.

Jamestown Reservoir’s level increased a foot from last Friday morning through Monday morning.

The Pipestem Dam release was lowered Monday 100 cfs, down from 145 cfs.

Officials still anticipate the combined releases from Jamestown and Pipestem Dams to be between 750- and 1,200 cfs.

Martin adds, lake levels will continue to increase, with some snow cover remaining near pipestem as ice is still covering most of both Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs.

The overland flood watch remains in effect at Pipestem Creek in Pingree, as the creek is over its banks but not threatening structures. The watch is in effect through Friday afternoon.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Apr 29, 2013) — The James River Community Center, in Jamestown hopes to be moved and opened at the new location at Legacy Place, in the former Jamestown Hospital location, on May 7, 2013.

On Monday’s (Apr 29, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Director, Laurie McGuire said, changes in meals and activities will be changing this week, allow the move to take place.

She said, on Friday May 3, 2013, the regular lunch will be served, then, in the afternoon no activities will be held, as the move to the new location starts.

On Saturday, May 4th, and Sunday May 5th, only frozen meals will be available.

On Monday May 6th, frozen meals will be offered, and no activities will be held.

On Tuesday, May 7th, The James River Community Center is planning to open in their new facility at Legacy Place, at the former Jamestown Hospital location.

She added that this week her office is working with Century Link in keeping the current phone number at the new location.

 

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – A project to grow lettuce in a large greenhouse near Jamestown is seeking more than $1 million in backing from local agencies including the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. and the South Central Dakota Regional Council.
 
Endless Harvest hopes to grow lettuce for markets around the upper Midwest. The first phase of construction would include a 2.7-acre greenhouse, along with an administration area and classrooms for teaching about greenhouse operations.
 
     The first phase would cost about $11 million. Some funds already have been raised through a loan and private investor. Possible future phases would be funded through operation profits.

 

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (KCSi-T.V News Apr 29, 2013) Jamestown based, Farm Rescue will receive two-year funding of $150,000 from the Otto Bremer Foundation and $50,000 from Bremer Bank. The $200,000 will be used for equipment, training, and general operations.

Farm Rescue President and Founder, Bill Gross says, “We are thankful that the Otto Bremer Foundation and Bremer Bank have been strong supporters of Farm Rescue. This funding will help us to expand our assistance to farm families in a larger geographical area.”

Foundation Trustee, Charlotte Johnson says, “The Otto Bremer Foundation is pleased to provide support as Farm Rescue continues to help farm families survive potentially devastating circumstances,.”

Kevin Powers, group president at Bremer Bank, adds, “Agriculture is an important part of our business and a major economic contributor to many of our bank communities. We think the work that Farm Rescue does to keep our farms healthy and thriving is critical and we are proud to support them.”

WESTHOPE, N.D. (AP) – A Westhope man accused of killing another city resident has pleaded not guilty to murder.
 
     Forty-nine-year-old Timothy Mundt is accused in the early February shooting death of 40-year-old Jessie Kirk. His trial likely will be held in October. He could face life in prison if convicted.
 
     Mundt on Monday waived his right to a preliminary hearing, meaning there was no testimony about the circumstances of the alleged killing. Authorities have not released details other than that Kirk was killed with a rifle.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Grand Forks man who held a SWAT team at bay for hours over the weekend faces felony charges of burglary, arson and criminal mischief.
 
  25-year-old Steven Bonderud appeared in court on Monday. He did not enter pleas to the charges that could land him in prison for 30 years if he’s convicted. He is due back in court June 3.
 
     Authorities allege that an armed Bonderud was suicidal on Sunday when he broke into a home that was for sale and set several small fires inside. He eventually surrendered peacefully but the standoff prompted authorities to evacuate two nearby churches.
 
     Authorities estimated damage to the home at $10,000.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota woman has been charged with attempted murder, terrorizing and reckless endangerment after leading authorities on a car chase and ramming into law enforcement vehicles. The Ward County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Amber Osbourne, of Fairdale, is being held at the Ward County Jail.

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A 39-year-old Williston woman is charged with neglecting her child after police say she left her cognitively impaired 10-year-old boy to guard a camper from intruders while she went to take a shower.
 
     Williams County District Judge Joshua Rustad last week found enough probable cause to send Carrie Tyler to trial on the charge of child neglect or abuse. The charge stems from a Feb. 25 incident in which Tyler’s landlord called police and reported that the boy had been abandoned.
 
     A police officer talked to the boy, whose clothes were soiled. The Williston Herald reports that the boy told investigators that he needed to guard the camper so that “drunks and druggies” wouldn’t break in.

 

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (AP) – An airman from the Minot Air Force Base who was deployed to Guam has died.
 
     Airman First Class Joshua Grier was found unresponsive Saturday at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam. The 20-year-old was transferred to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10: 30 a.m.
 
     The cause of Grier’s death remains under investigation.
 
     Airman Grier is assigned to the 5th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.
 
     He deployed to Guam in March 2013 to provide support to the U.S. Pacific Command’s continuous bomber presence in the region. 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has directed all flags be flown at half-staff in North Dakota in honor of former Gov. William Guy.  
 
     Dalrymple says he’s asking all flags to be at half-staff from sunrise Tuesday to sunset Thursday.
 
     Guy died Friday. He was 93.
 
     Guy was North Dakota’s longest-serving governor. He was elected to four terms as governor from 1960 through 1972, but two of his races were for two-year terms. North Dakota’s governorship did not carry a four-year term until 1964.
 
     Memorial services for Guy are slated Tuesday in Fargo and Thursday in Bismarck. A private burial is slated Thursday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The dash for trash is back on track in North Dakota’s largest city.
 
     Fargo officials last week moved the annual spring cleanup week from May to September after the National Weather Service warned residents to prepare for record Red River flooding.
 
     But a drastic drop in the expected crest and complaints from residents convinced city commissioners to reconsider. On Monday they voted to return to the original schedule of May 6-10.
 
     The event allows residents to put items on the curb for free pickup by garbage crews.
 
     The weather service has revised the expected peak of the river from nearly 41 feet to about 35 feet, tomorrow, which is 17 feet above flood stage but unlikely to cause significant damage.
 
     The river was measured at 32.34 feet at 10 p.m. Monday.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some rural areas in North Dakota are dealing with flooding after a weekend of warm weather that melted snow.
 
     The Red Cross tells the Grand Forks Herald overland flooding in Rolette County prompted the evacuation of eight families late Sunday. Their mobile homes were damaged by 2 feet of water.
 
     Six of the families are staying with family or friends. The other two are staying in a Rolla hotel.
 
  Overflowing creeks and coulees and snowmelt draining off hills is leading to problems in north central North Dakota. Some roads have been closed or washed out.
 
     Road flooding in the Minot area trapped at least one vehicle on Sunday.
 
     The state Transportation Department on Monday closed U.S. Highway 81 south of Minto due to water on the roadway.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has appointed a new executive director of the North Dakota Department of Human Services.
 
     Maggie Anderson has been appointed to the position. She replaces Carol Olson who retired in August. Anderson had been interim executive director since then. 
 
     Dalrymple says Anderson is a proven leader and brings much experience to the role of executive director.
 
     Anderson says she is honored to have the position. She says she looks forward to continuing to work with Dalrymple, legislators and the entire DHS department to provide services.
 
     The Department of Human Services employs about 2,100 people and has a current, two-year budget of $2.6 billion.

 

 MAKOTI, N.D. (AP) – The Three Affiliated Tribes has announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for North Dakota’s newest refinery next month.
 
     The  groundbreaking ceremony for the refinery, located west of Makoti, will be May 8 at 4:30 p.m.
 
     The ceremony will be held immediately after the closing of the MHA Nation’s Annual Bakken Oil & Gas Expo.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Rapidly melting snow has caused flooding in some areas of North Dakota. 
 
     The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its weekly crop report that on average, producers had just one day of suitable conditions for fieldwork last week.
 
     Calving was 83 percent complete, while lambing was 90 percent complete and shearing was 95 percent complete.
 
     Cattle and calf conditions were rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 64 percent good and 7 percent excellent.
 
     Sheep and lamb conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 64 percent good and 8 percent excellent.

HOUSTON (AP) – Chandler Parsons scored 27 points as the Houston Rockets avoided elimination with a 105-103 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder last night. Patrick Beverley added 16 points for the Rockets, who played without point guard Jeremy Lin. Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 38 points.

 NEW YORK (AP) – Brook Lopez and Deron Williams each had double-doubles as the Brooklyn Nets downed Chicago 110-91 to force a sixth game in the NBA first-round series. Lopez finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Williams delivered 23 points and 10 assists to help the Nets win for the first time since the series opener. Andray Blatche (AHN’-dray blach) provided 10 of his 13 points while the Nets outscored the Bulls 33-18 in the final period, one game after Brooklyn blew a 14-point lead over the last four minutes of regulation and lost in triple-overtime.
 
  ATLANTA (AP) – Josh Smith scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Hawks beat Indiana 102-91. The Pacers cut a 17-point halftime deficit to 84-79 with less than five minutes left before Smith swished a rare 3-pointer. Kyle Korver finished with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Al Horford added 18 points for the winners

 CHICAGO (AP) – The Minnesota Wild head to Chicago to open the postseason tonight against the top-seeded Blackhawks. The Wild, led by Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu, are back in the playoffs for the first time in five years. Blackhawks goalie Ray Emery and center Dave Bolland have been ruled out of the game with lower-body injuries.

     EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings have signed cornerback Jacob Lacey and defensive end Lawrence Jackson. The Vikings also waived punter T.J. Conley yesterday. Both Lacey and Jackson played for the Detroit Lions last season.

 

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – The Tim Tebow (TEE’-boh) era in New York is over, at least with the Jets. He was waived by the club today, ending his one-season engagement with the club. In a statement, coach Rex Ryan simply said, “Things did not work out the way we all had hoped.”
 
     Tebow attempted just eight passes with the Jets after joining them in a trade with Denver in March of 2012. He threw for 39 yards and rushed 32 times for 102 yards.
 
     Mark Sanchez remains with the Jets along with recent second-round draft pick Geno Smith out of West Virginia.

     NEW YORK (AP) – It appears the Sacramento Kings are staying put after the NBA’s relocation committee voted unanimously today to recommend that owners reject the application for the team to relocate to Seattle.
 
     The league’s Board of Governors will convene during the week of May 13 to vote on the matter, although the relocation committee’s recommendation doesn’t guarantee the Kings will stay put. The Kings’ current owners sent a letter to the relocation and finance committees saying they preferred to sell to the Seattle group and expressed discontent with Sacramento’s latest bid to retain the franchise.

     NEW YORK (AP) – NBA veteran center Jason Collins has become the first male professional athlete in the major four American sports leagues to come out as gay. Collins wrote a first-person account posted on Sports Illustrated’s website.
 
     Mostly a backup in his career, Collins has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards. The 34-year-old is a free agent who says he wants to continue playing.
 
     President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton spoke of Collins’ courage, tennis great Martina Navratilova called him a pioneer, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers compared him to Jackie Robinson and Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash simply tweeted, “The time has come.”

     UNDATED (AP) – The Colorado Avalanche have received the first selection in the June 30th NHL draft by winning Monday’s lottery. 
 
     The Avs now have the best chance to get Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones, considered the top prospect in the draft. Jones is an outstanding two-way player who scored 14 goals and 56 points while posting a +46 in 61 games for the Winterhawks this year. The Plano, Texas, native is the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones and helped the U.S. reach the World Junior Championship title game last winter.
 
     Colorado had an 18.8 percent chance of winning the lottery after finishing the regular season with a 16-25-7 record, worst in the Western Conference.
 
     Florida has the second pick, followed by Tampa Bay, Nashville and Carolina. The Panthers had the best odds of securing the No. 1 pick after finishing dead last in the NHL this season.

 LOS ANGELES (AP) – Testimony is expected to begin today in the lawsuit Michael Jackson’s mother has brought against the promoter of the concert tour he never took. Katherine Jackson claims her son died in June 2009 from an overdose of a powerful anesthetic because the promoter AEG failed to properly investigate the doctor giving it to him. Dr. Conrad Murray is serving time for involuntary manslaughter.
 
     VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) – Authorities in Calaveras County, Calif., say they have no more of a description than a man with long gray hair. And the community is in lockdown since a mysterious intruder stabbed to death 8-year-old Leila Fowler in her home. The girl’s 12-year-old brother found her body Saturday and also saw the intruder.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – New York City’s medical examiner wants to make sure there are no human remains in a place where last Wednesday a plane part was discovered. Officials say the part of a plane wing may have belonged to one of the jets that struck the Twin Towers on 9/11. The part was found between an apartment building and a mosque that’s blocks from ground zero.

 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve begins its two-day meeting today and experts believe policy makers likely will decide to keep borrowing costs at record lows. The Fed has said it would keep its key short-term interest rate near zero at least until the unemployment rate dips below 6.5 percent. Right now it’s 7.6 percent.
 
     PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) – A Pakistani court has banned former military ruler Pervez Musharraf from running for public office for the rest of his life. Musharraf returned to Pakistan last month from self-imposed exile to make a political comeback, but he was put under house arrest in connection with a case involving his decision to fire senior judges while in power.
