Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 1, 2013) — The Jamestown City Fire Department and Montana Dakota Utilities responded to a call just before 4-p.m., on Wednesday (May 1, 2013) at where a natural gas leak was reported.

City Fire Lt. Sheldon Mohr said the location was in the alley at 1214 9th Avenue, Southeast, where a natural gas line was ruptured.

An individual was digging to place a fence post when the line was struck.

The city fire department was on standby at the scene, until MDU shut off the gas line about 4:30-p.m., and the city fire department returned to the fire station.

24 city fire fighters were called to the fire station, as two fire units were on the scene.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 1, 2013) — The American Cancer Society reports, that once again the Jamestown High School National Honor Society, under the supervision of Tammy Mullowney, along with community volunteers, James & Linda Bender and Bill & Nellie Degen, hosted a very successful 2013 Daffodil Days event, raising approximately $6,000.

　

Community Relations Manager, Mary Dahl , in Fargo, days, the American Cancer Society would like to share that it appreciates every bouquet of daffodils purchased, and we want to reassure everyone that the dollars raised by the event will be used to help the American Cancer Society continue its funding of cancer research, its state and national legislative advocacy, and its many educational and patient service programs.

This year alone, the investment will be approximately $120 million in cancer research nationwide; $3.2 billion has been invested since the research program began in 1946.

A portion of the money raised by past Daffodil Days in Stutsman County is presently being used to support Look Good … Feel Better, Patient Lodging Program, and Transportation Assistance, which are very successful and well-utilized programs here in our area. The money raised locally is also helping to fund the Society’s Cancer Resource Centers. Patients and their families from Jamestown and throughout North Dakota have been visiting these Centers for information and assistance following their diagnosis of cancer.

The Society’s research program is the largest, private, not-for-profit source of funding for cancer research in the United States, second only to the federal government. In fact, 46 of the researchers we have financially supported have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. The Society’s funding has also helped play a part in every major research break-through in the past 50 years, including: the Pap Test, mammography, Gleevex, Tamoxifen, Herceptin, Gardacil, the first successful chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and the bone marrow transplant technique.

Ms Dahl says the American Cancer Society greatly appreciates the support of the students and community volunteers, Don’s House of Flowers and staff for providing a staging area and storage of the fresh flowers, and all who purchased Daffodil products.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 1, 2013) — Jasper Schneider, USDA Rural Development state director, visited Jamestown Wednesday to visit with local officials.

At a City Hall briefing he provided an update on programs, and went over current USDA projects, and talked about the needs of the Jamestown community.

Officials on hand included Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen.

Schneider toured USDA projects and visited the Spiritwood Energy Park.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A fire at a Bismarck office building has displaced six businesses.
 
     The fire in the Manhattan Building was reported by a passer-by about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. No one was hurt in the blaze but damage is estimated at about half a million dollars.
 
     Investigators say the fire appears to be electrical in nature and accidental.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 51-year-old Hannah man has died after apparently driving over a submerged road near Wales and trying to walk through frigid flood water.
 
     The man, who has not been identified, was found at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
 
     The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the man was driving northbound eight miles north of Wales Tuesday night when he tried to cross a portion of the road that had been washed out by rising waters earlier in the day. The Highway Patrol thinks the man then exited his partially submerged pickup to attempt to walk through the waters.
 
     The man was found dead in the water. Investigators believe icy waters and unusually cold temperatures contributed to his death.
 
     The incident remains under investigation.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck elementary school was evacuated when a student brought two World War II-era grenades to show classmates.
 
     The school district issued a statement Wednesday saying the student did not intend any harm. But students at Pioneer Elementary School were evacuated as a precaution.
 
     Police Sgt. Mark Buschenasays  a bomb squad determined the grenades were not functional. They were confiscated anyway, and Buschena says it’s possible the student could be cited.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The next two-year budget for North Dakota’s Department of Human Services has broken a billion-dollar barrier.
 
     The  state House and Senate have approved a Human Services budget that calls for state general fund spending of just under $1.2 billion – a record state agency budget.
 
     Human Services is the largest state agency, with more than 2,100 employees. Total spending for the department including federal money is estimated at just under $3 million over the next two years.
 
     The Human Services budget bill now goes to Gov. Jack Dalrymple for his signature.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Legislature on Thursday will match its longest session in modern state history.
 
     Thursday is Day 79. That matches the 2009 session when lawmakers logged 79 days. 
 
     Two years ago, the session lasted 78 days.
 
     Lawmakers still have some last-minute measures before the state constitution’s 80-day limit is imposed. 
 
     The last day of the session is commonly called Sine Die, which means adjourning without setting another meeting.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature is pausing today morning so that lawmaker’s can attend the funeral of former four-term Gov. William Guy.
 
     Guy died Friday from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 93.
 
     A memorial is slated Thursday at a Bismarck church, with a private burial to follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Guy served in the Navy during World War II.
 
     Guy was North Dakota’s longest-serving governor. He served from 1960 through 1972.
 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s House has killed a bill aimed at restructuring oil taxes.
 
     Representatives defeated the bill 71-21 on Wednesday.
 
     The measure has been one of the most contentious of the legislative session. The bill would have lowered tax rates for oil companies in exchange for closing the so-called stripper well loophole that the state Tax Department says is costing the state about $50 million in revenue annually. And it would have given the Three Affiliated Tribes a greater share of the taxes collected from reservation oil production.
 
     Democrats were especially critical of the measure, saying it would have cost the state millions of dollars in lost revenue.
 
     Attempts to close the stripper well exemption have failed in the past three legislative sessions.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Red River appears to have crested in Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn.
 
     National Weather Service meteorologist Greg Gust says it appears a preliminary crest of more than 33 feet was reached early Wednesday. The exact level will be verified later.
 
     Gust says the river level is expected to slowly decline over the next few days and drop below major flood stage of 30 feet early Sunday.
 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A bill to authorize a Red River flood diversion project should reach the Senate floor Monday. Authorization of the nearly $2 billion proposal means construction can begin. Federal funding will need to be appropriated each year to cover the cost of construction.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal budget proposal that could lead to U.S. border crossing fees is drawing opposition in North Dakota.
 
     Sherwood hardware store owner Allan Engh says it’s senseless to charge people to come into the country to spend money. He estimates one-third of his business comes from Canadian customers.
 
     Winnipeg resident Andrew Chan says he travels to Fargo two or three times a year. He tells The Forum a border-crossing fee might cause him to scale back his visits.
 
     U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer has joined 18 others in Congress in signing a letter asking Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to reject a proposal in the department’s 2014 budget to study charging the fee.
 
     Cramer says North Dakota welcomes more than a million visitors from Canada each year.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court is taking public comments on where it should base three new state district court judgeships approved by the Legislature.
 
     Gov. Jack Dalrymple has signed a bill approved by the House and Senate that provides for the new judges – one in the southeast and two in the northwest. Chief Justice Gerald Vandewalle (VAN’-duh-wahl) had asked lawmakers for the new judgeships to help handle a large increase in court cases due in part to the oil boom in western North Dakota. The cost is estimated at $1.7 million.
 
     Two of the new judgeships are in the Williston-based Northwest Judicial District and the third is in the Fargo-based East Central District. They need to be filled within 30 days of the bill becoming law on Aug. 1

 

In sports…

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. Sports May 2, 2013) — A winter kill may have occurred this year at Pipestem Reservoir.

North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials report dead carp have been found on the shores and may confirm that the lake suffered a winter kill, caused by a lack of oxygen, likely caused by the decay of vegetation washed into the lake during previous high water events.

The dead carp have been found on west end of the reservoir.

A few other fish species were found in the mix.

 

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. Sports May 2, 2013) — Construction will start on fast-pitch diamond 11 in Jamestown.

The Jamestown Parks and Recreation board voted 4-1 to begin construction immediately, rather than delay the start until after the spring and summer sports season.

Fast-pitch softball proponents want to see the work done now.

The Western Dakota Athletics fast pitch softball tournament is set for Jamestown on May 24, 2013.

Tournament teams can use the fields at the Hillcrest Softball Complex.

  UNDATED (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins opened their Stanley Cup playoff schedules with victories. Pascal Dupuis (doo-PWEE’) scored twice and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 shots as the Pens blanked the Islanders 5-0, and Nathan Horton provided the game-winner in the Bruins’ 4-1 triumph against Toronto. San Jose is the first team to win on the road after Dan Boyle scored the game-winner and had an assist in a 3-1 verdict over Vancouver.

     PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard is the fourth player to be unanimously selected for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award.
 
     The sixth pick in last year’s draft led all rookies in scoring at 19 points a game. Lillard also averaged 6.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds while playing all 82 games.
 

 
     ST. FRANCIS, Wis. (AP) – The Milwaukee Bucks are in search of a new head coach after dismissing Jim Boylan yesterday. The Bucks were swept out of the playoffs by the Miami Heat after dropping 12 of their last 16 regular-season games to post their eighth losing season in nine years.
 
     Boylan was promoted from assistant coach when Scott Skiles left the team on Jan. 8.

 

MLB…

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts is threatening to move the team from iconic Wrigley Field if the team is blocked from installing a video board at the stadium to generate revenue. Rooftop owners, who charge fans for access to watch games, have vowed legal action if the Cubs build anything that blocks their views. Ricketts says he’s committed to working out an agreement but says the video board would bring the team $20 million a year more in ad revenue.
 
     KENTUCKY DERBY
  
     LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Orb has been made the early 7-2 favorite for the Kentucky Derby, with undefeated Verrazano the second choice in a full field of 20 horses. Orb has drawn the No. 16 post, where just four horses have managed to win.
 
     Verrazano drew the No. 14 post and is the 4-1 second choice as one of Todd Pletcher’s record-tying five horses in the field.
 
     Goldencents landed in the No. 8 post and was made the 5-1 third choice for Saturday’s race.
 
     NASCAR-PENSKE APPEAL
 
     CONCORD, N.C. (AP) – A three-member appeals board is upholding NASCAR’s penalties against Penske (PEHN’-skee) Racing, but team owner Roger Penske is taking his case a step further. NASCAR chief appellate officer John Middlebrook will hear Penske’s final appeal next Tuesday. 
 
     Penske was issues the penalties after the cars of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano failed inspection last month at Texas.
 
     NASCAR docked both drivers 25 points, fined the crew chiefs $100,000 each and suspended seven Penske team members.
 
 

In world and national news…

BOSTON (AP) – Three friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) are themselves facing charges in the investigation. Authorities say after the three learned Tsarnaev was a suspect, they tried to help him by removing a backpack of emptied fireworks from his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama will nominate Hyatt hotel heiress Penny Pritzker today to run the Commerce Department. Pritzker is also a businesswoman and longtime fundraiser, and she’s Obama’s final pick to fill vacancies among Cabinet secretaries in his second term. Michael Froman, a senior economic adviser and former Citigroup executive, is Obama’s pick to be the next U.S. Trade Representative.        

     
 
     BAGHDAD (AP) – The United Nations says more people were killed in violent attacks across Iraq in April than in any other month since June 2008. The U.N. mission to Iraq says 712 people were died in violence, and many of them were Iraqi security forces.        
 
     NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – The Justice Department is offering a $1 million reward for the capture of a convicted cop killer who escaped from a New Jersey state prison in 1979. The FBI says Joanne Chesimard was serving a life term before she escaped and fled to Cuba, where she’s lived under the name Assata Shakur. Chilly relations between the U.S. and Cuba have made the island nation a haven for fugitives, but the climate is changing. Just last month, a Florida couple who allegedly kidnapped their children and sailed to Cuba were sent back to the U.S.        
 
     ATLANTA (AP) – Authorities say rapper Chris Kelly, who was half of the 1990s kid duo Kris Kross, has died of an apparent drug overdose. He was 34. Kelly and partner Chris Smith were known for wearing their clothes backwards and had the 1990s hit “Jump.” Kelly died yesterday in an Atlanta hospital.
