BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Transportation Department says floodwaters have receded from state Highway 66 east of Egeland and traffic speeds have returned to normal.
Speeds still are reduced on N.D. Highway 14 south of the U.S. 2 junction near Towner due to floodwaters, and state Highway 17 remains closed at the bridge crossing the Red River in Walsh County.
The state Transportation Department says water has receded from U.S. Highway 81 south of Minto and it is once again safe for travel.
Transportation officials say traffic speeds have returned to normal on Highway 81 south of Hamilton, where floodwaters have now receded.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Fire Department was called out about 11:02 p.m., Thursday (May 2, 2013) to an area near I-94 Exit 258, between R.M. Stoudt and Jamestown Regional Medical Center, near the westbound lane of I-94.
Lt. Sheldon Mohr said a power pole was on fire and burned grass in the area.
No damage to the pole, with less than a 10th of an acre of grass burned. The fire did not reach a nearby tree line.
Otter Tail Power crews were called to the scene to check the pole and wires.
The cause was listed as electrical
The five fire units and 26 city fire fighters were on the scene about 40 minutes.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 2, 2013) – Jamestown School Board meeting on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 5:15 pm has been moved to the Middle School Gymnasium located at 203 2nd Avenue SE, Jamestown.
Superintendent Robert Toso says, he expects upwards of 200 people to attend the meeting.
He said one of the first items on the agenda is to rescind the recent school board vote that denied hiring Jeff Nold, to a teaching position.
At the April 25, 2013 meeting the school board, on a 5-3 vote, turned down hiring Jamestown High School Principal Bill Nold’s son, Jeff for a business teacher position, after a contentious discussion.
Jeff Nold is the son of Bill Nold, principal of Jamestown High School — where the position of business teacher now remains vacant.
He said following rescinding the April 25th vote, school board is able to discuss again, hiring Jeff Nold, and then vote again on whether or not he should be hired.
At the April 25ht meeting, voting in favor of hiring Jeff Nold were board members, Diane Hanson, Gail Martin and Greg Allen.
Opposed were board members Roger Haut, Roy Musland, Roger Haut, Shelly Jystad and Terry Anderson.
Board member Heidi Larson was not present during the vote.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 2, 2013) — The James River Community Center, in Jamestown hopes to be moved and opened at the new location at Legacy Place, in the former Jamestown Hospital location, on Tuesday May 7, 2013.
With an update On Thursday’s (May 2, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Director, Laurie McGuire said, changes in meals and activities will be happening this week, allow the move to take place.
She said, on Friday (May 3, 2013,) the regular lunch will be served, then, in the afternoon starting at 1:30-p.m. no activities will be held, as the move to the new location starts.
Volunteers are welcome to help with the move starting Friday afternoon. Just come to the present location at 502 10th Avenue, Southeast in Jamestown.
On Saturday, May 4th, and Sunday May 5th, only frozen meals will be available.
On Monday May 6th, frozen meals will be offered, and no activities will be held.
On Tuesday, May 7th, The James River Community Center is planning to open in their new facility at Legacy Place, at the former Jamestown Hospital location.
She added that this week her office is working to keep the current phone number at the new location.
She pointed out that there will be no changes in the James River Transit phone number or services.
She added the buses will still be garaged at the present location which is owned by Center One, as the bus drivers will drop off patrons at the new Legacy Place location, at the former Jamestown Hospital location, and work with the staff there on transportation arrangements with patrons.
Those coming to the new location, starting on Tuesday May 7, 2013 will be able to enter the ground level location, either by coming in the south door, the west door across from Lincoln School, or the front door of the former hospital, and then taking the elevator to the ground level location.
There will be tours of the new facility at Legacy Place, to familiarize patrons with the lay out and the services available, including lunch and other activities.
Laurie thanks Essentia Health for the donation of office furniture and equipment from when Essentia moved to their new clinic location on the campus of Jamestown Regional Medical Center.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 2, 2013) — Commercial airline boardings at Jamestown Regional Airport were at 162 in April 2013, compared to 185 in April of 2012.
Airport Manage, Matthew Leitner, on Thursdays’ (May 2, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 said, in May of 2012 boardings were 193, and he anticipates an increase to over 300 boarding in May this year.
Leitner pointed out that plans are being made to construction t-hangars at the airport, noting good public input on the topic from the recent public meeting.
It’s still to be decided if the new hangars would be owned and leased by the airport, and privately owned.
Leitner said this summer airport projects will include installing new gates, a new rotating beacon, and improved runway lighting.
He said Great Lakes Airlines is keeping the current flight schedule.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office will be conducting survey work, beginning Monday May 6, 2013, in and around the river area in Jamestown.
The work is part of the on-going U.S.Army Corps of Engineer’s River Study, and should be completed in 2-3 weeks.
The data to be collected includes first floor and low opening elevations of home and businesses near the river, which will require city crews to be on numerous individual private properties for short periods of time.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KCSi-T.V. News May 2, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, selected Tower City, N.D., resident Scott Tichy as one of its three Civil Servants of the Year this year.
The St. Paul District presents this award annually to the top three or four of its 700 employees. Tichy, who’s worked for the Corps of Engineers for more than 21 years, is a park ranger and natural resource specialist at Lake Asthabula in Valley City, N.D.
Tichy received this award in recognition for his outstanding support to his community during the past year. In addition to the excellent interpretation and community relations work he did at Lake Ashtabula, he supported his local park board and Ducks Unlimited chapter.
Rich Schueneman, Tichy’s supervisor, says, “Scott is an outstanding park ranger. He possesses excellent community relations skills as seen in his involvement with his church, his interpretation of Corps Water Safety messages and his work with various community groups, providing expertise in trail maintenance, construction, forestry and recreation. A passion for the outdoors, a strong commitment to community and family and outstanding leadership skills are hallmarks of Scott’s career at the Corps of Engineers.”
Tichy will receive his award at the 36th Annual Minnesota Federal Civil Servant of the Year Awards in St. Paul, Minn., May 3.
BISMARCK, N.D. (May 2, 2013) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple signed into law House Bills 1012 and 1020, important legislation that will enhance North Dakota’s quality of life by providing services to the state’s most vulnerable citizens and investing in North Dakota’s water supply, and flood protection and water management projects.
Dalrymple was joined by legislators and other state officials during a signing ceremony at the state Capitol.
A Bill signed into law allocates $31 million that will support both Sheyenne River and Devils Lake flood control.
On the Sheyenne, $21 million will be used for permanent flood control projects in Valley City, Lisbon, and Fort Ransom, including property acquisitions, and flood walls and levees.
For Devils Lake, $10 million will continue operations of the east and west end outlets that continue reducing water levels and flooding.
For general water management statewide, House Bill 1020 includes $33 million for rural and other flood control, dam safety, repairs and reconstructions; snagging and clearing; studies and planning; and Devils Lake outlet downstream mitigation.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – No people or animals were hurt in a barn fire at a North Dakota ranch with a reputation for producing some of the best rodeo bucking bulls in the world.
Mandan Rural Fire Chief Lynn Gustin says the blaze Thursday afternoon destroyed the barn belonging to Chad Berger. Gustin says there were some saddles, tack and hay bales inside the barn.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined. The Berger family declined comment.
FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) – The FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs are investigating an apparent homicide on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in North Dakota.
The FBI has not released details including the identity of the male who died or whether anyone is in custody, citing the ongoing investigation.
BIA officials are referring questions to the FBI.
WALES, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a northeastern North Dakota man who died after his vehicle became partially submerged in floodwaters in Cavalier County.
The Highway Patrol says 51-year-old Steve Feil, of Hannah, apparently attempted to cross a road that had been washed out, then tried to walk through the frigid waters when his pickup truck became stuck and he succumbed to the cold.
Feil’s body was found Wednesday morning about 200 yards from his pickup, about 8 miles from Wales.
Authorities are continuing to search for 55-year-old Guy Miller, whose pickup was swept off a Walsh County road by floodwaters Monday near Minto.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The next two-year budget for North Dakota’s Department of Human Services has broken a billion-dollar barrier.
The state House and Senate have approved a Human Services budget that calls for state general fund spending of just under $1.2 billion – a record state agency budget.
Human Services is the largest state agency, with more than 2,100 employees. Total spending for the department including federal money is estimated at just under $3 billion over the next two years.
The Human Services budget bill now goes to Gov. Jack Dalrymple for his signature.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Friends, family and former and current political figures gathered in Bismarck Thursday to remember William Guy, North Dakota’s longest serving governor.
Guy died last Friday from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 93.
Former U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad called Guy a giant in North Dakota political history. Conrad says Guy was an architect of development strategy for this state.
Former Sen. Byron Dorgan recalls Guy traveling the state and talking with “bankers and barbers, presidents and plumbers.” Dorgan says Guy didn’t come to office to be somebody, he wanted to do something.
Another memorial was held at a Fargo church on Tuesday. A private burial is to follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Guy served in the Navy during World War II.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota National Guard says Chief Warrant Officer Shelly Sizer will be the first woman named to the post of state command chief warrant officer.
Sizer will take the job during a Saturday afternoon ceremony at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck.
She’ll replace Chief Warrant Officer David Jundt, who is retiring from the position after 42 years of service.
Warrant officers are considered the Army’s technical experts in work, training and education.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)- The seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings are going home tied 1-1 with the Anaheim Ducks. The Red Wings lost a 4-1 lead in the final period but recovered to beat the Ducks 5-4 in overtime on Gustav Nyquist’s power-play goal at 1:21 of OT.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Barret Jackman scored his first career playoff goal in the final minute of regulation to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings last night. Patrik Berglund also scored in the third period for the Blues, who have a 2-0 series lead. Dustin Brown netted the Kings’ lone goal.
UNDATED (AP) – Alex Ovechkin’s (oh-VECH’-kinz) franchise-record 31st career playoff goal got the Capitals started before less-heralded teammates Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera scored 46 seconds apart, and Washington beat the New York Rangers 3-1 in Game 1 of their first-round series.
Ottawa surprised Montreal with a 4-2 road victory despite being outshot 50-31. Craig Anderson made 48 saves in a spectacular night between the pipes for the Senators. Eric Karlsson had a goal and one assist. Neither team gets much rest before Game 2 scheduled for Friday night in Montreal. One player definitely out is Canadiens center Lars Eller. He suffered a concussion, plus facial and dental fractures on a hit from Ottawa defenseman Eric Gryba, who was tossed out of the game.
MLB-FINES…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Major League Baseball has fined umpire Tom Hallion (HAHL’-yihn) and Tampa Bay pitchers David Price, Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore for their dustup last weekend.
Hallion was the plate umpire and crew chief during a game Sunday at Chicago against the White Sox and Price thought he missed a pitch. They exchanged words and the AL Cy Young winner accused Hallion of directing an expletive at him.
Hallion called Price a “liar” after the game.
Price, Hellickson and Moore later made comments about Hallion on Twitter. Each of the pitchers was fined $1,000. It was unknown how much Hallion was docked.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – David Kahn is out as president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Flip Saunders is coming in. The Timberwolves announced yesterday that owner Glen Taylor has decided not to pick up the option for next season on Kahn’s contract. Three people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press that Taylor is putting the finishing touches on a deal to hire Saunders as Kahn’s replacement.
Golden State coach Mark Jackson was fined $25,000 by the NBA for making public comments in an attempt to influence the officiating in the Warriors’ playoff series with Denver. He accused the Nuggets of sending “hit men” at his star guard, Stephen (STEH’-fihn) Curry.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) – Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson has agreed to help the Detroit Pistons search for a head coach as an advisor. The Pistons fired Lawrence Frank after a 29-53 season and 54-94 mark in his two seasons.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Rory McIlroy starts the day in a seven-way tie for first place as second round play begins at the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy is tied with Ryan Moore, Robert Garrigus (GEHR’-ih-guhs), Nick Watney, Daniel Summerhays, Nate Smith and Derek Ernst as some 37 golfers are within three shots of the lead.
KENTUCKY DERBY…
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Two Montana oilmen who do a lot of work in North Dakota have a horse in the race in Kentucky, as well – literally.
Billings residents Carter Stewart and Ken Schlenker own a horse that is running in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. It’s named Frac Daddy, a take on the oil drilling technique known as fracking.
Stewart says the horse is a tribute to all of the oil field workers in America and especially the Williston Basin in the Dakotas and Montana.
Frac Daddy’s odds of winning are posted at 50-1, but Stewart says he’s optimistic. He says he thinks the horse has a shot.
LOUISVILLE (AP) – As the lineup changed for the Kentucky Derby in the last few days, so did the jockey assignments. Jose Espinoza retains the mount on Giant Finish, the third-place finisher in the Spiral Stakes who joined the field late Tuesday. Edgar Prado will ride Charming Kitten, while Robby Albarado will be aboard Golden Soul.
The forecast for Saturday calls for occasional rain. It looks like a 50-percent chance of showers in the Louisville area.
Orb has been made the early 7-2 favorite for the Kentucky Derby, with undefeated Verrazano the second choice in a full field of 20 horses. Post time is 6:24 p.m. EDT.
NASCAR-HAMLIN…
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Denny Hamlin has received medical clearance to return this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.
Hamlin has missed four races after sustaining a compression fracture of a vertebra in his lower back in a last-lap accident at California on March 24.
Joe Gibbs Racing said exact plans will be determined at the track. Hamlin could start the No. 11 Toyota, then give way to a relief driver.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Economists say the April employment report from the Labor Department today should look a bit better than the one in March. They predict that more than 100,000 jobs were added in April, compared to a disappointing 88,000 in March. Unemployment is forecast to be unchanged at 7.6 percent.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A university and thousands of people from hundreds of homes have been evacuated as a wildfire continues to expand around a coastal region in Southern California today. By the time it reached Pacific Coast Highway late last night, the blaze had burned about 8,000 acres – or 12 1/2 square miles. Wind gusts of nearly 30 mph haven’t helped.
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) – There are reports from Kyrgyzstan (KEER’-gih-stan) that a U.S. military plane has crashed there. The central Asian country hosts a U.S. base that is used for troops transiting into and out of Afghanistan and for C-135 tanker planes that refuel warplanes in flight.
ISLAMABAD (AP) – The investigation of the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto which also involves former Pakistani ruler Pervez Musharraf, has been thrown into disarray following the assassination of the lead prosecutor. The official was killed by gunmen as he drove to work today. A woman bystander also died when she was hit by the prosecutor’s car.
LONDON (AP) – The only known surviving example of the German Dornier Do 17 bomber known as the “flying pencil” is to be salvaged from its watery grave in the English Channel. The RAF Museum says the challenging operation will be the biggest recovery of its kind. Plans are to put the recovered bomber on display in London next to a British bomber.
