BISMARCK, N.D. (AP & KCSi-T.V. News May 14, 2013) – Thunderstorms that crossed southern North Dakota early Tuesday packed strong winds that knocked out electricity to half of Valley City for a time and blew over vehicles. No one was hurt.
The National Weather Service estimated wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour near Valley City downing some trees in the city.
Six vehicles were blown off I-94 between Tower City and Sanborn.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports two separate incidents occurred, on Tuesday morning, (May 14, 2013), as a result of high winds.
First, at about 5:45 a.m., a 35,000lb. semi pulling an empty cattle trailer travelling westbound on I-94 at mm 280, opetated by 45 year old Walt Lashley of Billings, Montana, drove into what he described as “pitch black” conditions before the north winds pushed his semi and trailer towards the median before it tipped onto the driver’s side and came to rest in the median. Westbound I-94 was shutdown for approximately 10 minutes while wreckers pulled the vehicle upright.
The second incident involved two westbound pickups pulling bumper-hitch campers who pulled onto the shoulder and stopped due to weather conditions.
The report says the vehicles were operated by John and Carl Roll of Perry and Morrice, Michigan.
As both vehicles sat stopped on the shoulder, the high winds tipped both campers over causing them to become detached from the hitch of the pickups. The two campers were partially blocking I-94, mm 298 (east of Valley City) however traffic was able to maneuver around the blockage.
No injuries were sustained during either of these two events.
Assisting the Highway Patrol were Gille’s Towing, Main Street Towing, and Interstate Towing.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 14, 2013) — The author of the book “Colorblind,” Tom Dunkel, from Washington, D.C., will be at the Jamestown Arts Center, on Wednesday May 15, 2013, selling his book and chatting with local residents about Jamestown’s and Bismarck’s history of semi-pro baseball.
His Jamestown visit will be at noon, and last about an hour, as part of an upper midwest book tour.
On Tuesday’s (May 14, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Bruce Berg of Jamestown, who has read the book twice, said Dunkel centers the book on the year 1935 and semi pro baseball teams in Jamestown and Bismarck that had many black baseball players. The book also notes baseball in North Dakota in the late 30’s when for a couple of years Jamestown had a Class “D” minor league team, an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, and then going into the Northern League.
Berg said the book is historical in nature, not only in terms of baseball, but also North Dakota’s history.
The book notes that baseball pitching legend Satchel Paige pitched for the Bismarck team, that had a great rivalry with the Jamestown team.
Author Tom Dunkel has written for Sports Illustrated magazine and for the sports pages of several large newspapers.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck woman faces a felony child neglect charge after authorities who responded to a report of smoke in her apartment say they found four children home alone.
Bond has been set at $2,000 for 30-year-old Viola Grinnell. Court documents don’t list an attorney for her, and a home telephone listing couldn’t be found.
Emergency officials who responded to Grinnell’s apartment shortly before midnight Saturday say they found the children, ranging in age from 2 to 10, and a large amount of smoke. They determined that the smoke was coming from burned pot holders in the oven and a stove burner that had been left on.
Authorities say Grinnell told them a baby sitter she had arranged for before she left didn’t show up.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota truck driver has been sentenced to serve about 2 1/2 months in jail for a crash in North Dakota last June that killed a motorcycle driver.
Fifty-six-year-old James Toner, of Long Prairie, Minn., reached a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor aggravated reckless driving charge. He initially had been charged with felony manslaughter.
Authorities say Toner drifted wide to the left with his semitrailer so he could make a right-hand turn at a Fargo intersection. Twenty-nine-year-old motorcyclist Jason Viestenz, of Fargo, was trailing and collided with the rig. He died and his 10-year-old son was injured.
Toner will not be allowed to have a commercial driver’s license during two years of probation following his jail term.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo woman has been sentenced to serve four months in jail for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her condominium association to support a gambling habit.
Forty-three-year Linda Brendemuhl will be on supervised probation for five years following her time behind bars. She also was ordered to repay more than $39,500 to the Fireside Condo Association.
Brendemuhl pleaded guilty to a felony charge of misapplication of entrusted funds.
CHICAGO (May 14, 2013) – U.S. retail gas prices have risen from their March & April slumber and nowhere has the awakening been ruder than it’s been in seven of the plains states.
Over the past week, retail gasoline prices spiked as follows:
North Dakota: ($0.19 per gallon); Kansas ($0.17); Nebraska ($0.16); Iowa ($0.15); Oklahoma ($0.14); South Dakota ($0.13); Minnesota ($0.12).
“Most states have seen increases over the past week and the national retail average reflects that with a 6 cent per gallon increase, but clearly, these states have gotten the brunt of it,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst, GasBuddy. And, he cautions, “We could see another 10- to 20-cent increase in these states over the next four days. Tomorrow’s Energy Information Administration report could add to the volatility.”
What’s behind the run-up? Tom Kloza, GasBuddy’s chief oil analyst, says there are three factors:
He cited typically low mid-spring inventories in some Midcontinent states as well as the diversion of some supply to Great Lakes markets that saw low refinery output thanks to scheduled heavy maintenance. Meanwhile, a major turnaround for a HollyFrontier refinery in East Tulsa is about to remove some production from the Oklahoma and Kansas refinery centers that provide much of the gasoline and diesel for Plains’ states. Kloza stressed that the May price spike would be an episode, rather than a long term trend for the region.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An ethanol plant on the Columbia River that was built with the help of $36 million in Oregon state loans and tax credits is now being used to store and ship crude oil from North Dakota.
The Oregonian reports the plant’s switch came with little public notice.
It was built at a cost of $200 million for Cascade Grain at the Port of St. Helens’ Port Westward Industrial park near Clatskanie. The owner filed for bankruptcy in 2009, less than a year after startup. It produced little ethanol and is mothballed except for the storage tanks.
Global Partners LP of Massachusetts bought the plant in February and renamed it the Columbia Pacific Bio-Refinery. It takes oil that arrives by train from North Dakota’s Bakken oil field.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Attorney General Eric Holder says he’s ordered a Justice Department investigation into the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups for extra tax scrutiny. He says the FBI is coordinating with the Department of Justice to see if any laws were broken. At a news conference at the Justice Department, Holder called the practice “outrageous and unacceptable.” Steven Miller, the IRS acting chief, has acknowledged “a lack of sensitivity” in the agency’s screenings of political groups seeking tax-exempt status and insisted those mistakes won’t be repeated.
WASHINGTON (AP) – According to Attorney General Eric Holder, the Justice Department’s secret review of Associated Press phone records was part of an investigation into what he calls a grave national security leak. But Holder says he played no direct role in the decision to look at the phone records. He says he removed himself from the matter because of congressional testimony he had given, and his own dealings with the news media. The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of AP reporters and editors.
ABOARD THE USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (AP) – For the first time, the Navy has launched an unmanned aircraft the size of a fighter jet from a warship. The craft took off successfully Tuesday morning in the Atlantic and made two low approaches to the ship before heading back toward land. A drone that can take off and land on an aircraft carrier is considered especially valuable, because it can be used around the world without the need to use another country as a home base.
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) – Workers are demolishing what’s perhaps the best known symbol of Superstorm Sandy’s devastation along the New Jersey shoreline. A crane is tearing apart the remnants of the Jet Star Roller Coaster that plunged off an amusement pier into the ocean during the Oct. 29 storm. The work began Tuesday afternoon in the summer tourist destination of Seaside Heights after Great Britain’s Prince Harry ended a visit there.
GRANBURY, Texas (AP) – Texas con man Billie Sol Estes (EHS’-teez) has died. He was a colorful 1960s swindler whose case became a national sensation. Estes was 88. He became notorious in 1962, when he was accused of looting a federal crop subsidy program in a scam involving phony financial statements and non-existent fertilizer tanks.
