Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Dry conditions sparked a fire Tuesday (May 14, 2013).

The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called about 4-p.m. to a large hay bale fire Tuesday four miles northwest of Spiritwood Lake.

The 150 hay bales on fire spread and burned 5-10 acres of land.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP & KCSi-T.V. News May 14, 2013) – Thunderstorms that crossed southern North Dakota early Tuesday packed strong winds that knocked out electricity to half of Valley City for a time and blew over vehicles. No one was hurt.

Four power poles were knocked over, leaving about 1,500 customers without power for about two hours.

The National Weather Service estimated wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour near Valley City downing some trees in the city.

Six vehicles were blown off I-94 between Tower City and Sanborn.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports two separate incidents occurred, on Tuesday morning, (May 14, 2013), as a result of high winds.

First, at about 5:45 a.m., a 35,000lb. semi pulling an empty cattle trailer travelling westbound on I-94 at mm 280, opetated by 45 year old Walt Lashley of Billings, Montana, drove into what he described as “pitch black” conditions before the north winds pushed his semi and trailer towards the median before it tipped onto the driver’s side and came to rest in the median. Westbound I-94 was shutdown for approximately 10 minutes while wreckers pulled the vehicle upright.

The second incident involved two westbound pickups pulling bumper-hitch campers who pulled onto the shoulder and stopped due to weather conditions.

The report says the vehicles were operated by John and Carl Roll of Perry and Morrice, Michigan.

As both vehicles sat stopped on the shoulder, the high winds tipped both campers over causing them to become detached from the hitch of the pickups. The two campers were partially blocking I-94, mm 298 (east of Valley City) however traffic was able to maneuver around the blockage.

No injuries were sustained during either of these two events.

Assisting the Highway Patrol were Gille’s Towing, Main Street Towing, and Interstate Towing.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 14, 2013) — The author of the book “Colorblind,” Tom Dunkel, from Washington, D.C., will be at the Jamestown Arts Center, today Wednesday May 15, 2013, selling his book and chatting with local residents about Jamestown’s and Bismarck’s history of semi-pro baseball.

His Jamestown visit will be at noon, and last about an hour, as part of an upper midwest book tour.

On Tuesday’s (May 14, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Bruce Berg of Jamestown, who has read the book twice, said Dunkel centers the book on the year 1935 and semi pro baseball teams in Jamestown and Bismarck that had many black baseball players. The book also notes baseball in North Dakota in the late 30’s when for a couple of years Jamestown had a Class “D” minor league team, an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, and then going into the Northern League.

Berg said the book is historical in nature, not only in terms of baseball, but also North Dakota’s history.

The book notes that baseball pitching legend Satchel Paige pitched for the Bismarck team, that had a great rivalry with the Jamestown team.

Author Tom Dunkel has written for Sports Illustrated magazine and for the sports pages of several large newspapers.
