Correy Hickman (JR/Morris, MN)’s three-point play with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter put the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team ahead 53-52 and the Jimmies held on for a 56-52 win over College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.
Jamestown, which trailed by as many as 12, did not take its first lead until Makensi Higlin made a pair of free throws to put UJ ahead 39-38 with 9:27 remaining.
The Saints later went ahead by as many five (50-45) following Madelyn Turner’s free throws with 5:10 to play.
A 5-0 UJ run tied the game with 2:37 to go, and the score held at 50 until Trista Merrival made a pair of free throws to give CSM a 52-50 lead.
Hickman’s three-point play ignited a 6-0 run that helped the Jimmies close out the game, with four of UJ’s final six points coming from the foul line.
Jamestown finished 23-of-32 at the foul line, while College of Saint Mary was 5-of-6. The Jimmies shot just 25.4 percent (16-of-63) overall, including 1-of-23 (4.3 percent) from three point range. The Flames were 20-of-57 (35.1 percent) overall and 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
UJ held a 50-39 rebounding edge, including a commanding 22-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Higlin’s 11 points off the bench led the Jimmies. Kia Tower (FR/Bigfork, MN) and Noelle Josephson (SO/Ramsey, MN) both finished with eight. Tower grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Macy Nilsen (FR/Edina, MN) had three assists.
Merrival had 15 to lead CSM. Lynsey Curran was also in double figures with 11.
The Jimmies (14-9 overall, 8-8 Great Plains Athletic Conference) travel to Aberdeen, S.D., Monday for a non-conference game against Presentation College at 5:30 p.m.
