FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Icy weather has caused problems with electrical transmission lines in parts of eastern North Dakota Friday evening. According to KFGO Radio, Cass County Electric Co-op says customers in the Valley City and Fort Ransom areas reported outages Friday due to ice and frost build-up on power lines.
Some of the power lines were hanging as low as 5 feet off the ground. The co-op says its crews were working to remove the ice and frost. Similar conditions were reported by Minn-Kota Power Co-op.
Jamestown (CSi) At Saturday’s Polar Pig, Walk The Plank event, at Stutsman Harley-Davidson, Valley City’s Chad Henningsgard raised over $3,000 to support JRMC’s Hospice program.
Organizer of the event, Don Wegner said Saturday that when this year’s total is known, he believes the event’s total over the 14 years of fundraising for Hospice will top the $200,000 mark.

Stutsman Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist
Jamestown (CSi) Stutsman County Emergency Manager, Jerry Bergquist on Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 updated information that was included in last Wednesday’s Flood Preparation meeting held in Jamestown.
He said, those looking into purchasing flood insurance should make a decision within the next week or so, as the policy takes effect 30 days, from the time of purchase.
He said water releases from Jamestown and Pipestem Dams continue through the winter.
At this time the combined release is at 650 cfs.
As of Friday, Jamestown Reservoir had just over seven feet of water, into the flood storage zone, with Pipestem Reservoir with six and a half feet left to get to winter elevations. As this time the target date to reach those levels in March 1, 2020.
He added at this time it’s still to early to know what the releases will be this spring.
He said Jamestown is still diked to handle a combined release of 2400 cfs, with sand bags left in place from last fall’s sandbagging efforts.
He pointed out that many factors, are unknown at this time to take under consideration for spring flooding, including, the eventual soil moisture content, snow water equivalent and temperatures affecting snow melt.
The current snow-water equivalent is three inches of water.
Jerry said February 13 will be the next flood outlook information issued by the National Weather Service.
In rural areas, it’s anticipated that the pot hole regions, now filled with water will become more of a problem in terms of travel in rural areas, with the snow melt and any additional precipitation added to the total.
He said, before the Presidential Disaster Declaration was issued on January 21, 2020, for 16 counties, including Stutsman and Barnes, Stutsman County reported $4.2 million in damages, including $3.4 million damages to township roads, including $600,000 in county road damages, and $101,000 in road damages in the city of Jamestown.
Remaining damages reported are in Medina, Streeter, Courtenay, and Cleveland.
Jerry said it may be possible that stemming from additional damages the counties could end up with back-to-back Presidential Declarations.
He added that local officials have yet to receive specific information concerning the disaster declaration until a February 19, meeting.
Jamestown (CSi) Middle school students in the area will come together at the University of Jamestown, on March 9, for the annual TechSavvy & STEMtastic event.
More than 500 students will participate in a fun, daylong event to explore different careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEM professionals will be leading hands-on and interactive workshops over the day, which students sign up for ahead of time.
“The events would not be possible without the tremendous support of local, state and regional companies sending their STEM professionals to lead hands-on workshops,” stated Co-chair Erica Althoff, Engineer with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in North Dakota. “Students who have participated in the event have enjoyed it.”
Schools scheduled to participate this year include Jamestown Middle School, Medina, Pingree-Buchanan, Montpelier, Litchville-Marion, Gackle-Streeter, Hillcrest Academy, Barnes County North, and Edgeley. These 7th and 8th graders will participate in the one-of-a-kind experience at no cost.
Presenters from across the state will put on different workshops that will include dentistry, chemistry, pharmacy, engineering, wildlife biology, drones, graphic design, transportation and more.
“Through hands-on workshops, exposure to STEM professionals and role models, and a conversation on engineering problem solving principles followed by small group activity to put their knowledge into practices, students are encouraged to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists. The atmosphere of a college campus helps them envision their future accomplishments,” Althoff stated.
The morning will begin with a welcome from University of Jamestown President Dr. Polly Peterson, followed by a keynote speaker from NASA.
The event is sponsored by AAUW Jamestown with numerous sponsors including the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, Interstate Engineering, Jamestown School District 1, University of Jamestown, and the ND Stem Network.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A pipeline spill of oilfield wastewater in northwestern North Dakota has affected more cropland than originally reported. State environmental scientist Bill Suess said regulators were notified earlier this month of the 8,400 gallon (31,797 liter) pipeline leak in Renville County. The pipeline operator initially said about 1,000 square feet (92.9 square meters) of cropland was affected. But the owner of the cropland said it may have contaminated as much as 400,000 square feet (37,161 square meters) of soil. Suess said that estimate could be accurate but the official number is not yet known.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A veterinarian from western North Dakota said she is seeking the Democratic endorsement for governor. Shelley Lenz made the announcement Friday at the party’s headquarters in Bismarck. Lenz lives in Killdeer and Dickinson and has veterinary clinics in those cities. She previously served as a school board member in Killdeer. Lenz is originally from Ohio and moved to North Dakota in 2007. Republican Gov. Doug Burgum and Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford are seeking a second term. They won with 76% of the vote in 2016. Democrats haven’t won the governor’s office in North Dakota since 1988. The party holds no statewide offices.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota regulators have ordered an oilfield services company to pay a $1 million penalty for a saltwater spill last summer and other violations. The Bismarck Tribune reports that settlement was reached following an Aug. 25 blowout at a saltwater disposal well owned by Henry Hill Oil Services, which is based in nearby Williston. The blowout spilled 250 barrels or 10,500 gallons of brine. Regulators say the company failed to immediately report the blowout, didn’t pressure test the equipment designed to prevent blowouts and didn’t adequately clean up the spill. The company declined to comment.
(AP) A survey report suggests the economy continues to grow in nine Midwest and Plains states. The Mid-America Business Conditions index jumped to 57.2 in January from 50.6 in December. The survey was conducted before much of the bad news was reported about the coronavirus outbreak that originated in China. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says the outbreak could harm the regional economy in the weeks ahead. The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Survey organizers say any index score above 50 suggests growth. A score below that suggests decline.

NFL-SUPER BOWL
Chiefs capture Super Bowl in late comeback against the 49ers
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have ended a half-century of frustration.
Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ’) engineered three touchdown drives in the final 6:13 as the Chiefs roared back from a 10-point deficit to defeat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20 in Super Bowl 54. It’s the first NFL championship for the Chiefs since beating the Minnesota Vikings, 24-7 in Super Bowl 4.
Mahomes righted himself after throwing interceptions on consecutive possessions. The comeback started when Mahomes engineered a 68-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard scoring toss to Travis Kelce (KEHL’-see). The Chiefs quarterback put his team ahead for the first time since the second quarter by hitting Damien Williams for a five-yard TD. Williams later capped his 104-yard rushing performance by scampering 38 yards to give Kansas City breathing room.
Mahomes shook off a slow start to finish 26 of 42 for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tyreek Hill had 105 receiving yards on nine catches, and Sammy Watkins had five receptions for 98 yards.
The 49ers took advantage of Mahomes’ first interception by turning it into a one-yard scoring run by Raheem Mostert late in the third quarter. Mostert’s scoring run gave San Francisco a 20-10 lead.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid earned his 222nd career victory, and his first in a Super Bowl. No other coach had won more games without winning an NFL championship.
The 49ers fell short in their bid for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title, even though they dominated for much of the first 3 1/2 quarters. Garoppolo threw for 219 yards and kept the Chiefs’ defense guessing by completing passes to eight receivers.
Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP after leading the Kansas City Chiefs back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers. Which is notable for a whole bunch of reasons, including that Mahomes is the youngest QB to win the award – and the youngest player in NFL history to win both a regular-season MVP and a Super Bowl.
It’s also notable because Mahomes was on the cover of Madden 20. And Madden cover athletes aren’t supposed to have successful seasons.
NBA..
UNDATED (AP) — James Harden and the Houston Rockets were able to cool off the surging New Orleans Pelicans while staying atop the NBA’s Southwest Division.
Harden fell one assist shy of a triple-double as the Rockets guard delivered 40 points and 10 rebounds in a 117-109 victory over the Pelicans. New Orleans led 97-92 until Harden nailed a 3-pointer that sparked Houston’s comeback.
Russell Westbrook added 22 points for the Rockets and Ben McLemore had 22 off the bench.
Rookie sensation Zion Williamson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Pelicans, whose three-game winning streak was snapped.
Checking out Sunday’s other NBA action:
— Giannis Antetokounmpo’s (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-pohz) 30 points and 19 rebounds were among the Bucks’ highlights in a 129-108 rout of the Suns. Fellow All-Star Khris Middleton had 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Milwaukee, which shot 49.5% and made 15 of 38 from 3-point range. The Bucks rebounded from Friday’s setback against Denver and avoided just their second losing streak since the start of last season.
— Andre Drummond had a double-double and the Pistons rallied from an early 21-point deficit to beat the Nuggets, 128-123 in overtime. Drummond had 21 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out midway through OT. Reggie Jackson added 20 points and Bruce Brown scored 19 as Detroit ended a five-game losing streak.
— Terence Davis scored a career-high 31 points and the Raptors picked up their team-record 11th consecutive victory by ripping the Bulls, 129-102. Pascal Siakam (see-A’-kam) added 17 points for Toronto, which outscored the Bulls 69-39 in the second half to beat Chicago for the 12th straight time. The Raptors were without guard Norman Powell, who broke the ring finger on his left hand in Friday’s win at Detroit.
NBA-NETS-IRVING OUT
Kyrie Irving out at least a week with right knee sprain
NEW YORK (AP) — Nets guard Kyrie Irving will miss at least a week with a sprained medial ligament in his right knee.
Irving was injured in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss to Washington. He and Wizards guard Bradley Beal became entangled while battling for a loose ball. Irving’s knee twisted as he landed on the court, causing him to stay down for a couple minutes before taking the jump ball and heading to the locker room.
Irving was less than two weeks removed from returning to the lineup after missing 26 games with a right shoulder injury.
Men’s College Basketball…
Tyler Hagedorn tossed in 27 points and Triston Simpson made two free throws with 6 seconds remaining to send South Dakota to an 81-80 victory over Omaha. Hagedorn made two free throws with 3:25 left to play to put the Coyotes (16-8, 7-3 Summit League) up 79-74. Matt Pile answered with a dunk for the Mavericks (12-11, 5-3) and Ayo Akinwole made four free throws in a 60-second span to give Omaha an 80-79 lead with 21 seconds to go. KJ Robinson scored 22 top Omaha. Pile added 19 points and nine rebounds.

Illinois led 62-61 before going scoreless over a 3:59 stretch, ending the drought in the closing seconds.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Pens hold off Caps
UNDATED (AP) — A month ago it appeared the Washington Capitals were poised to run away with the NHL’s Metropolitan Division title. The Pittsburgh Penguins have changed all that by winning 16 of their last 21 games to get within four points of the Caps with one game in hand.
Brandon Tanev (TAN’-ehv) scored the eventual game-winner and Matt Murray stood tall during a last-minute onslaught to help the Penguins secure a 4-3 victory in Washington. Tanev’s goal with 2:33 remaining gave the Pens a seemingly comfortable 4-2 lead, but Lars Eller put the pressure back on Pittsburgh by scoring just 15 seconds later.
Murray finished with 29 saves and Patric Hornqvist provided the go-ahead tally, one day after the forward underwent a dental procedure. Sidney Crosby had an assist in his 50th career game against Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (oh-VEHCH’-kihn), who was held off the scoresheet.
Eller scored twice for the Capitals.
Elsewhere on NHL ice:
— The Hurricanes pulled out a 4-3 win over the Canucks on Justin Willliams’ second game-winning shootout goal in four games since returning to Carolina. Nino Niederreiter (NEE’-dur-eye-tur), Sebastian Aho (AH’-hoh) and Andrei Svechnikov (SVEHCH’-nih-kahv) scored in regulation to back James Reimer, who made 32 saves. Vancouver’s winning streak ended at five games despite Elias (eh-LEE’-uhs) Pettersson’s two goals.
— Pierre-Luc Dubois (look doo-BWAH’) scored twice and added an assist to send the Blue Jackets to their seventh win in eight games, 4-3 over the Canadiens. Columbus netminder Elvis Merzlikins (murz-LIH’-kihnz) made 27 saves and improved to 10-2-0 since replacing injured starter Joonas Korpisalo (YOH’-nuhs kohr-pih-SAH’-loh). The Jackets are 11-2-1 since New Year’s Eve, pushing them one point ahead of the Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division.
TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Djokovic wins 8th Australian title
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) has won a record-extending eighth Australian Open championship, beating Dominic Thiem (teem) 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. No other man in the history of tennis has won this tournament more than six times.
It’s the 17th Grand Slam title for Djokovic, who has five titles from Wimbledon, three from the U.S. Open and one from the French Open. Only Roger Federer’s 20 and Rafael Nadal’s (nah-DAHLZ’) 19 top Djokovic’s Grand Slam count.
Djokovic’s victory means he will return to No. 1 in the rankings, replacing Nadal.
Thiem is 0-for-3 in Grand Slam finals.
PGA-PHOENIX OPEN
Simpson rallies to win Phoenix Open
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Webb Simpson rallied late in regulation to beat Tony Finau (FEE’-now) and capture the PGA’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Simpson birdied the final two holes of regulation to force a playoff before sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to win it. Finau missed an 18-foot birdie try in the playoff.
Simpson closed with a 2-under 69 for a 17 under total.
WORLD WCUP-WOMEN’S SUPER-G
Brignone wins super-G in overall leader Shiffrin’s absence
ROSA KHUTOR, Russia (AP) — Federica Brignone (feh-deh-REE’-kah breen-YOH’-nay) won a women’s World Cup super-G after overall leader Mikaela Shiffrin sat out the race.
The American three-time overall champion decided to skip the races in the 2014 Olympic resort after winning the previous super-G and a downhill in Bulgaria a week ago.
The win left the Italian 270 points short of Shiffrin’s leading tally.
FRANCE-RAPE ACCUSATIONS
French skating head questioned amid sex abuse claims
UNDATED (AP) — The head of the French skating federation has been summoned for a meeting with the country’s sports minister following a string of accusations of sexual abuse by a coach in the sport.
Didier Gailhaguet is not directly targeted but will need to explain why coach Gilles Beyer continued his work at the federation following an investigation that had raised suspicion.
Gailhaguet has been called in following the publication of a book last week in which 10-time French champion Sarah Abitbol accused Beyer of raping her between 1990 and 1992 when she was a teenager.
Gailhaguet was a central figure in the judging scandal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese scientists say they have more evidence that the new virus that recently emerged in China likely originated in bats. In two papers published Monday in the journal Nature, scientists report that genome sequences from several patients in Wuhan show the virus is closely related to the viruses that cause Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. SARS is believed to originate in bats, although it jumped to civet cats before infecting people in the 2002-2003 international outbreak. Although scientists suspect the latest virus outbreak in China began at a seafood market in Wuhan where wild animals were on sale and in contact with people, the animal source has not yet been pinpointed.
BEIJING (AP) — China is sending medical workers and equipment to a newly built hospital, infusing cash into financial markets and further restricting people’s movement in sweeping new steps to contain a rapidly spreading virus and its escalating impact. China’s updated figures of 361 deaths and 2,829 new cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the Chinese total to 17,205 cases, come as other countries continued evacuations and restricted travel by Chinese or people who recently traveled in the country. Reopening of schools was also delayed in Hubei, the province at the epicenter of the outbreak, where a specialized 1,000-bed hospital started treating patients and a second hospital with 1,500 beds for patients with the new virus will open within days.
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government is planning to announce new rules for the imprisonment of convicted militants after an Islamic extremist who was recently released from prison stabbed two people in south London. Sunday’s attack was the second in less than three months. Police on Monday searched a hostel in London to which the alleged attacker moved less than two weeks ago. London Mayor Sadiq Khan is outraged. He says the attack was clearly foreseeable. He says there are more than 70 people in Britain who have been convicted of terrorist offenses who have served time and have been released. The government is expected to effectively stop the early release of convicted extremists.
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Union negotiator Michel Barnier set out tough opening gambits in negotiating a future trade deal. On Monday each side make it clear they will be willing to walk away without a trade deal rather than compromise on key issues. Just 3 days after Britain left the EU, Johnson says the U.K. will not agree to follow all the rules set by the 27-nation bloc. Barnier was equally emphatic that the 27 nations would not agree to any deal just to avoid a costly, chaotic no-deal end to the transition period at the end of the year.
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A leaked recording of an exchange between an Iranian air-traffic controller and an Iranian pilot purports to show that authorities in Iran immediately knew a missile had downed a Ukrainian jetliner after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 people aboard, despite days of denials by the Islamic Republic. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged the recording’s authenticity in a report aired by a Ukrainian television channel on Sunday night. On Monday, Iranian authorities acknowledged the recording was legitimate. Iran’s civilian government has said it didn’t know for days that the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, answerable only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, shot down the aircraft early Jan. 8.
