Update…

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Barnes County corrections officials are facing a second lawsuit over separate deaths at the county jail in 2018. A federal suit filed Monday accuses officials of deliberately ignoring the suicide risk of Lonny Bradley, who killed himself on Oct. 5, 2018. Bradley used bed sheets to hang himself from a shower curtain rod, 18 days after an unsuccessful suicide attempt in the same bathroom. The complaint comes on the heels of a suit filed last year involving the July 21, 2018 death of 72-year-old Warren Lindvold, who died of a broken neck.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Big jackpots during the last fiscal year led to a 12% increase in North Dakota lottery ticket sales and the second highest in state history. Lottery director Randy Miller says North Dakota gamblers wagered $35.3 million on lottery games for the fiscal year that ended June 30. That’s down from a record $35.7 million in fiscal 2016. A total of $14.2 million in prizes was paid out to North Dakota players, which was up from $9 million the previous fiscal year. Most lottery profits go to the state’s general treasury, with smaller portions set aside to provide counseling for gambling addicts and for drug enforcement.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A group is seeking to oust Burleigh County Commissioner Kathleen Jones through a recall petition due in part for her support for resettling refugees in the county. The petition against her calls for Jones to be recalled for “the reasons of contempt of the voters and negligence in office.” Jones has served since 2014. Jones believes she is being targeted because of her gender since two male colleagues also voted for resettlement. The recall group must gather nearly 12,000 signatures from county residents within one year to force a recall election.

MLB-NEWS

Yanks’ Paxton out until at least May

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees have announced some bad news concerning their starting rotation.

Left-hander James Paxton has had back surgery for a herniated disk and is expected to be sidelined until May or June. The Yankees estimated Paxton’s approximate timeline to pitch in a major league game as three-to-four months.

The injury weakens a Yankees rotation already missing right-hander Domingo Germán, who must serve the final 63 games of an 81-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. Germán is eligible to return June 5, barring any postponements.

In other baseball news:

— The Braves have defeated Shane Greene in the first salary arbitration case this year. The reliever will be paid $6.25 million instead of his request for $6.75 million. The 31-year-old right-hander was a first-time All-Star last year before finishing the season with a 2.30 ERA, 64 strikeouts and 17 walks over 62 2/3 innings for the Tigers and Atlanta.

— The Reds and right-hander Pedro Strop (strohp) have finalized a one-year package worth $1,825,000, their first offseason move to upgrade the bullpen. A hamstring injury limited him to 50 appearances last season, when he went 2-5 with a 4.97 ERA, 10 saves and six blown saves.

— Ubaldo Jiménez (oo-BAHL’-doh hih-MEH’-nehz) is reuniting with the Rockies, who have given him a non-roster invitation to spring training. He tossed Colorado’s only no-hitter on April 7, 2010, in Atlanta before finishing the season with a team-record 19 victories and a 2.88 ERA. The 36-year-old Jiménez hasn’t pitched in the majors since Sept. 22, 2017, with Baltimore.

— The Cubs have invited former closer Brandon Morrow to spring training after buying out his contract last November. Morrow hasn’t pitched since July 2018 because of a bone bruise that required surgery. He had 22 saves and a 1.47 ERA in 35 games when he was shut down in the summer of 2018.

— The Phillies have signed infielder Logan Forsythe and right-handers Anthony Swarzak, Blake Parker and Trevor Kelley to minor league contracts with invitations to major league spring training.

— Major League Baseball is returning to the Dominican Republic for the first time in 20 years. The Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers will play a spring training game in Santo Domingo on March 7. MLB has never played a regular-season game in the Dominican Republic.

NFL-CHIEFS-SUPER BOWL PARADE

Chiefs get warm reception in chilly parade

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Kansas City Chiefs fans braved sub-freezing wind chills Wednesday to celebrate the team’s first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.

Fans lined the 2-mile parade route to thank their football heroes for bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City and ending a Super Bowl drought that began after the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV in 1970.

Quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ’) struggled with a strained voice but said the championship fulfilled two goals he set when he became the team’s starter. Óne was to bring the Lamar Hunt Trophy back to Kansas City as AFC champs, and the second was to win a Super Bowl for head coach Andy Reid. The Hunt Trophy is named after the original owner of the Chiefs.

Browns introduce new GM

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have introduced Andrew Berry as their new general manager.

The 32-year-old Berry is believed to be the youngest GM in NFL history, and he’s the second current African-American GM in the NFL. He joked he didn’t receive an upgraded parking space upon his return to Cleveland, where he was vice president of player personnel from 2016-18 under GM Sashi Brown.

Berry spent last season in the Philadelphia Eagles’ front office.

Meanwhile, the rival Steelers have given their general manager a contract extension. Kevin Colbert is now signed through the 2021 draft after considering retirement.

In world and national news…

(AP) The U.S. Senate Wednesday acquitted President Donald Trump of impeachment, ending only the third presidential trial in American history with votes that split the country and tested civic norms. The proceedings also are feeding the tumultuous 2020 run for the White House. A majority of senators expressed unease with Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine that resulted in the two articles of impeachment. But there was nowhere near the two-thirds vote necessary in the Republican-held Senate to remove the president from office. He was found not guilty of both articles of impeachment. Trump is eager to use the tally as vindication, a political anthem in his reelection bid.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New results from the Iowa Democratic caucuses show Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders nearly tied with almost all the votes counted. But the race remained too early to call early Thursday with 97% of precincts reporting. Party officials were scrambling to verify the remaining results three days after Iowans gathered at caucus sites across the state to begin choosing which Democrat will take on President Donald Trump in November. Buttigieg has a lead over Sanders of three state delegate equivalents out of 2,098 counted. The deadlocked contest gave both a burst of momentum as they seek to pull away from the crowded field.

BEIJING (AP) — China has cut tariffs on $75 billion of U.S. imports including soybeans, pork and auto parts in a trade truce with Washington as Beijing struggles with a costly virus outbreak. The cuts follow last month’s signing of a “Phase 1” agreement toward ending a long-running tariff war over Beijing’s technology ambitions and trade surplus. Both sides have made conciliatory gestures but the lingering dispute threatens to chill global economic growth. There was no indication Beijing altered its own reductions in response to the impact of measures imposed to contain a virus outbreak that have closed factories, restaurants and shops.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump meets Thursday with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who enters the White House with a warning: Africa is not a battlefield for proxy disputes with countries such as China. This is a rare visit by an African head of state to the White House under Trump, and the leaders’ second meeting after one in 2018. The meeting comes just weeks after the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group killed three Americans and destroyed several aircraft in Kenya in the deadliest attack against the U.S. military in Africa since 2017. The U.S. is now considering cutting its military presence in Africa.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish news agencies reported that search efforts have resumed in eastern Turkey, following two avalanches that killed dozens and left at least one person missing. The private DHA news agency said two bodies were recovered Thursday, bringing the death toll from the two avalanches to 40. Rescue workers, aided by dogs, were conducting scans in the eastern Van province to find the missing. Five people were killed and two people went missing in an avalanche that struck late Tuesday. After 300 emergency service workers were called to the site in Van province, which borders Iran, a second avalanche on Wednesday killed many rescue workers.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say four people have been found fatally shot inside an apartment in Indianapolis. Police say that officers responded about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to reports of shots being fired and found three men and one woman with apparent gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Names and details about the circumstances of the deaths weren’t immediately released. Information about a possible suspect or suspects also wasn’t released. Indianapolis police Assistant Chief Chris Bailey called it “a tragedy for our community.” Investigators were at the apartment complex early Thursday collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

MOSCOW (AP) — An International Space Station crew including NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who has spent more time in space on a single mission than any other woman, has landed safely in Kazakhstan. The Soyuz capsule carrying Koch along with station Commander Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency and Russian space agency’s Alexander Skvortsov touched down on Thursday afternoon. Koch wrapped up a 328-day mission on her first flight into space. She has given researchers the opportunity to observe effects of long-duration spaceflight on a woman. NASA needs such data since it plans to return to the moon under the Artemis program.
