Jamestown def Indiana Institute of Technology -21-25,25-17,25-17,25-11
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (uj.edu) — After falling 25-21 in the first set Friday, the University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team came back to win three straight sets over Indiana Tech University for a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-11).
Jamestown led 8-7 and then tied the first set at nine before Indiana Tech reeled off seven of the next ten points to go ahead 16-12. UJ got as close as 22-21 only to have the Warriors score three straight for the win.
In set two with the score tied at 7, the Jimmies went on an 11-5 run to take an 18-12 lead and then finished the set off with the last four for a 25-17 win.
Indiana Tech led 3-2 in the third set before four straight UJ points swung the momentum to the way of the Orange and Black. The Jimmies pushed the lead to 24-12 but made five straight attack errors to make the score closer than it should have been.
The Jimmies saved their best hitting for the fourth set, making just two errors in 25 attempts for a .440 hitting percentage. Indiana Tech had five kills and eight errors in 28 attempts to hit -.107 in the set. UJ finished the match outhitting the Warriors .226-.017.
Offensively, Clark Steele (JR/Lake Forest, Calif.) led the way with 14 kills. Nick Vanags (FR/San Diego, Calif.) had 13, and Austin Jacob (FR/Houston, Texas) was also in double figures with 10.
Vanags racked up 14 digs to record his first double-double, and Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.) added 10 digs.
Jacob hit a team-high .533 in the match while Vanags hit .407.
Derek Owens (FR/Andover, Minn.) had six total blocks, including four assists, while Steele, Jacob, and Derek Correa (FR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) each had three block assists.
Correa, who entered the night leading the NAIA in assists per set (11.82) passed out 42 more against Indiana Tech, his fourth straight match with 40 or more.
Jamestown, now 3-1 this season, finishes play in the William Penn Quadrangular on Saturday with a 9:00 a.m. match against William Penn and a 1 p.m. match against Viterbo (Wis.)
