ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State softball team dropped its final two games at the Presentation College Dome Classic on Saturday.
The No. 10-ranked Vikings fell 6-0 to No. 22 Morningside College in game one, and then dropped a tough 2-1 game to Dakota Wesleyan to wrap up the weekend.
The Vikings finished the tournament with a 1-3 record. VCSU will be back in Aberdeen next weekend for four more games.
Up next: Valley City State returns to Aberdeen next weekend for four more games at the Presentation College Dome Tournament. The Vikings will start the weekend at 10 a.m. Friday.
Morningside 6, VCSU 0
Morningside scored in the top of the first inning and made the early lead stand up the rest of the way in a 6-0 victory during game one Saturday.
The Mustangs tacked on two more runs in the third inning, and then added three insurance runs in the seventh to break open a close game.
Valley City State had seven different players record one hit each as VCSU finished with seven hits. Morningside collected nine total hits.
Freshman Joelle Lamontagne pitched a complete game in the circle for VCSU, allowing nine hits and six runs. She walked one and struck out two. Morningside had two pitchers – Katherine Wurtz and Hallie Misiaszek combine on the shutout.
Dakota Wesleyan 2, VCSU 1
The Vikings scored in the top of the first inning but could get no more as they fell 2-1 to Dakota Wesleyan in Saturday’s second game.
Joelle Aiello‘s one-out double in the top of the first inning jump-started the game for VCSU. Riley Perryman followed with a two-out RBI single to put the Vikings ahead 1-0.
Dakota Wesleyan tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the third inning, and then took a 2-1 lead with another run in the fourth. The Vikings had two runners on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to push across another run.
The Vikings finished with seven hits and one error. Dakota Wesleyan picked up the victory despite being held to just four hits.
Aiello, Sierra Crocker and Perryman all had two hits each to lead VCSU’s offense. Madison Gronau added a hit for VCSU.
Amber Stewart took the loss for VCSU after pitching a complete game. Stewart scattered four hits, walked seven and struck out seven.
