Update…

Friday afternoon:

Katie Ryan-Anderson reports, that “the 15 Jamestown nonprofits raised $1.85 million on Giving Hearts Day. That means 3% of the nonprofits raised 10% of all Giving Hearts Day dollars across North Dakota and parts of Minnesota! That’s a BIG accomplishment for our region. We are fortunate.”

Previously…

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown area goal on Giving Hearts Day was to raise $1-million.

Numbers reported on Friday showed that just shy of $2-million was raised through matching contributions, a new record going to non-profit organizations.

North Dakota officials reported that this year, a record $19,126,561 was raised by 34,574 donations.  100% is sent directly to one of the 483 participating charities.

Numerous Jamestown area nonprofits were the beneficiaries of Giving Hearts Day, Thursday.  The JRMC Foundation reporting that they received donations totaling $114,000, from nearly 330 donors, to be used for equipment purchases and needed technology.

Benefiting are JRMC Cancer Center, JRMC Hospice and the future fetal heart monitoring system for babies and laboring moms.

JRMC President & CEO Mike Delfs, says, “Integrating the new system means nurses can spend more time at the bedside and less time behind a computer.”

JRMC News Release From Katie Ryan-Anderson

Jamestown, ND, February 14, 2020 — With the help of hundreds of community members, Jamestown Regional Medical Center raised more than $114,000 for technology and equipment.

Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour, online giving event. For every $10 donated, JRMC received a match, up to $55,000.

“Community support is incredible,” said Lisa Jackson, Foundation Director. “With 24-hours of #GivingHeartsDay and your support, JRMC provides 24-hours of care, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We would not be able to care for the community without the support of so many.”

Nearly 330 donors supported causes including the JRMC Cancer Center, JRMC Hospice and the future fetal heart monitoring system for babies and laboring moms.

The future fetal heart monitoring system will replace aging equipment. It allows moms to move around, get comfortable and help labor progress naturally, said Family BirthPlace Manager Emily Woodley. The system integrates mom and baby vitals automatically into the patient record, saving nurses’ time and improving accuracy.

“Donor dollars provide innovation, technology and equipment to keep patients safe. In non-profit hospitals, our margins just don’t allow for this in our budget,” said JRMC President & CEO Mike Delfs. “Integrating the new system means nurses can spend more time at the bedside and less time behind a computer.”

JRMC was one of 15 Jamestown nonprofits to participate in Giving Hearts Day locally. Collectively, the group raised more than $1.8 million for local causes.

“This is a huge win for JRMC and the Jamestown community,” Jackson said. “Thank you to the community for their giving hearts. What you’ve done for JRMC and the Jamestown community will make THE difference in patient care.”

This Giving Hearts Day, more than 34,500 individuals gave $19 million to nonprofit organizations throughout the Upper Midwest.

“Every year on Giving Hearts Day, we talk about how gifts ‘double the love.’ When it comes to the JRMC this is absolutely true. Giving Hearts Day gifts directly affect our current patients; however, the love is doubled because those gifts help future patients too. Thank you to this community for the support. We are humbled,” Jackson said.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR-TV) — Two people are hurt and a number of people are displaced after a fire breaks out at a Grand Forks apartment building. KVRR reports the two injured were taken to Altru Hospital. Their conditions are not known. Firefighters got the call to the 18-unit building about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Crews arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the building. All residents were evacuated. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a body was found after a fire at a home near Grand Forks. The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office says someone in the home called 911 shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday to report the fire. Authorities say smoke and flames were coming out of the residence when deputies arrived. Sgt. Thomas Inocencio said a body was found inside the home after the fire was extinguished. Inocencio said an elderly woman lived at the home but authorities have not confirmed the victim’s identity. Inocencio said an autopsy is scheduled and the investigation continues.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Grand Forks man accused of starting a fire that extensively damaged a Bismarck apartment building has been sentenced to 1 ½ years of probation after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors. Eduardo Rodriguez originally was charged with arson and two criminal mischief felonies. Burleigh County State’s Attorney Julie Lawyer says the arson charge was reduced to misdemeanor reckless endangerment when lab tests about the origin of the fire were not conclusive and Rodriguez’ substance abuse on the night of the fire made intent difficult to prove. The June 5 fire caused more than $300,000 in damage to the building.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota regulators say oil production in December was down about 3% from November. The Department of Mineral Resources says the state produced an average of 1.47 million barrels of oil daily in December. That’s down from 1.51 million barrels from the prior month. North Dakota also produced about 94.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas in December, up from 94 billion cubic feet in November. Statewide, companies flared 16% of all gas produced in December, above the 12% target. There were 56 drill rigs operating Friday, up one from the December average.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Federal prosecutors have charged a Rapid City businessman in what they say was a $71 million fraudulent scheme to sell fake organic grain and seed. Court documents describe how Kent Duane Anderson used the profits to fuel an extravagant lifestyle that included a yacht, a multimillion dollar home and luxury cars. The U.S. Attorney’s Office last week filed an indictment for wire fraud and money laundering against Anderson. Prosecutors allege he sold non-organic grain and seed products as organic. Documents show Anderson made a $25 million profit from the fake organic sales from October 2012 to December 2017.

NBA-ALL-STAR GAME

Team LeBron beats Team Giannis

CHICAGO (AP) — It seems fitting that three Los Angeles-based players led an All-Star victory on a night the league honored Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Clippers forward Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard received the Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP award after scoring a game-high 30 points in Team LeBron’s 157-155 victory over Team Giannis (YAH’-nihs) in Chicago. Leonard made eight 3-pointers to finish one shy of Paul George’s All-Star record in 2016. Lakers forward LeBron James had 23 in helping has namesake squad win the All-Star game for the third straight year. Lakers forward Anthony Davis added 20 points, including a game-ending free throw.

The game format was overhauled to put in elements for charity and ensure that someone was going to hit a shot to end the game.

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) had a team-high 25 points but was shut out in the fourth quarter. Boston guard Kemba Walker finished with 23 points and Philadelphia center Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) had 22 for Team Giannis.

The league announced last week that it was renaming the All-Star game MVP after Bryant, who was among nine killed in a helicopter crash late last month. The crash also claimed the life of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna.

Jennifer Hudson wore the Lakers’ deep purple as she performed a pregame tribute to Bryant and sang “For All We Know.” Players on James’ team wore Gianna’s No. 2 on their jerseys and players on Antetokounmpo’s team wore Kobe’s No. 24 on theirs. All players wore a patch with nine stars, one for each victim of the crash.

American rapper Common also paid homage to Bryant in his pregame tribute to Chicago, saying that “even in the darkest times, you’ll feel Kobe’s light.”

NASCAR-DAYTONA 500

Daytona 500 postponed by rain

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It’s going to take another day to determine the winner of the Daytona 500.

NASCAR’s season-opening race was postponed following a second rain delay, pushing the event into Monday. It’s the second time in 62 years and first time since 2012 that “The Great American Race” will finish on a Monday.

Pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was the leader 20 laps into the race when the rain returned, sending drivers back to pit road.

The first delay lasted 50 minutes and came moments after the presidential motorcade completed a ceremonial parade lap around the 2 1/2-mile track. The second stoppage was prompted by heavier rain, further soaking a racing surface that takes hours to dry.

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL…

UNDATED (AP) — San Diego State remains the only unbeaten team in Division I men’s basketball following a resounding victory at Boise State.

— Luka Garza dropped in 24 points and No. 21 Iowa closed on an 11-0 run to pull out a 58-55 victory at Minnesota. Golden Gophers center Daniel Oturu missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw attempt with a chance to tie the game with 3.8 seconds left.

NHL…

Bruins, Pens win

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have expanded their lead in the NHL’s Atlantic Division, while the Pittsburgh Penguins have inched two points closer to the Metropolitan Division lead.

Charlie Coyle scored the Bruins’ second short-handed goal in as many days to give Boston a 2-0 lead in the second period of a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Charlie McAvoy tallied late in the first period and Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhuh-rahn) added an empty-netter to secure the Bruins’ eighth win in nine games.

Jaroslav Halak (YAH’-rah-slahv hah-LAHK’) stopped 25 shots and blanked the Rangers until Mika Zibanejad (MEE’-kuh zih-BAN’-eh-jad) beat him midway through the third period.

Darvish says Astros should lose World Series title

UNDATED (AP) — Yu Darvish has chimed in on Houston’s sign-stealing scheme, just over two years after getting rocked by the Astros in the World Series.

The Chicago Cubs pitcher says the Astros should be stripped of their 2017 championship, comparing them to an Olympian who loses a gold medal because of cheating. Darvish says he knows the Astros were stealing signs, but he acknowledged that he didn’t pitch his best during the 2017 Fall Classic.

Darvish lasted only 1 1/3 innings in both of his 2017 World Series appearances while playing for the Dodgers. He was tagged for four runs and six hits in Game 3 and was the losing pitcher in Game 7 at Dodger Stadium.

Meanwhile, commissioner Rob Manfred met with nearly half of the major leagues managers Sunday and told them to knock off any notion of get-even beanballs. Manfred’s visits come after Cody Bellinger, Kris Bryant, Trevor Bauer and Carlos Correa were among the All-Stars recently trading threats, accusations and barbs as spring training opened.

Manfred said he would personally talk to the managers of the teams that train in Arizona on Tuesday.

Suter had mostly been a starter the previous two seasons with Milwaukee before having elbow surgery in July 2018. He is expected to be used out of the bullpen this year.

— Pitcher Chad Bettis has signed a minor league contract with the Yankees, a deal that includes an invitation to big league spring training. The 30-year-old right-hander was 1-6 with one save and a 6.08 ERA in 39 games for Colorado last season.

PGA-GENESIS INVITATIONAL

Scott wins at Riviera

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adam Scott has another victory at Riviera, and this time it counts.

Scott survived a calamitous final round with just enough clutch putts to take the PGA’s Genesis Invitational. He closed with a 1-under 70 for a two-stroke victory over Matt Kuchar, Scott Brown and Sung Kang.

The victory comes 15 years after Scott won a playoff at Riviera that didn’t count as official because rain shortened the tournament to 36 holes. He earned every bit of this victory, his 14th on the PGA Tour and 29th worldwide.

Nearly a dozen players had a chance to win. Five players had a share of the lead at some point.

Portugal leaders rally around Porto player over racist slurs

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The president and the prime minister of Portugal have added their voices to a national outcry over racist abuse aimed at a black FC Porto soccer player who walked off the field after hearing monkey chants.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says he “vehemently condems any display of racism.”

Prime Minister Antonio Costa says “all and any acts of racism are a crime and are intolerable.”

Moussa Marega is a striker from Mali. He was visibly angered by monkey noises targeting him after he scored Porto’s second goal in a 2-1 win at Guimarães in the Portuguese league on Sunday. Opposition players and even some of Marega’s own teammates appeared to argue with Marega as he tried to walk off the field.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — Two charter flights carrying passengers from a cruise ship that was quarantined in Japan amid a virus crisis have landed in the United States. The first plane carrying American passengers landed at a Northern California air force base just before midnight Sunday. A second flight touched down at a San Antonio air force base around 2 1/2 hours later, early Monday. Passengers will be quarantined for two weeks to make sure they don’t have the new virus that’s been spreading in Asia. Japan’s defense minister tweeted earlier that Japanese troops helped transport 340 U.S. passengers from the port to Tokyo’s airport. About 380 Americans were on the cruise ship.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese officials have confirmed 99 more people infected by the new virus aboard the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess, bringing the total to 454. The ministry has been carrying out tests on passengers and crew on the ship, docked in Yokohama, a port city near Tokyo. The 14-day quarantine for those on the ship was due to end Wednesday. Outside China, the ship has had the largest number of cases of the COVID-19 illness caused by the virus that emerged in China late last year.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria’s military says its troops have regained control of territories in northwestern Syria “in record time,” vowing to continue to chase armed groups “wherever they are.” The announcement on Monday came hours after troops consolidated the government’s hold over the key Aleppo province, capturing over 30 villages and hamlets in the western countryside in one day and securing the provincial capital that had for years remained within range of opposition fire. The offensive, in full force since December, has displaced over 800,000 people within the shrinking rebel enclave, in one of the worst humanitarian crises since the war began nine years ago.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it’s pulling out of Australia, New Zealand and Thailand as part of a strategy to exit markets that don’t produce adequate returns on investments, dismaying officials concerned over job losses. Australia’s minister for Industry, Science and Technology said Monday that it was “disappointing” that the company only advised the government about the decision just before it’s announcement Sunday that it would wind down sales, engineering and design operations for its historic Holden brand in Australia and New Zealand in 2021. GM also plans to sell its Rayong factory in Thailand to China’s Great Wall Motors and withdraw the Chevrolet brand from Thailand by the end of this year. CEO Mary Barra says the company wants to focus on markets where it can drive strong returns.
