Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News May 29, 2013) — The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers on Wednesday (May 29, 2013) at noon, decreased the Jamestown Dam release from 1,000 cfs, to 850 cfs.
Bob Martin in Jamestown says, the reduction stems from the forecast of possible heavy rainfall amounts in the James River basin in the next few days.
Martin says, the reduction in releases from Jamestown Dam is for an unspecified period of time.
The release from Pipestem Dam remains at 200 cfs, for combined release of 1,050 cfs, down from 1,200 cfs.
The reduction from Jamestown Reservoir drops the James River level downstream of the confluence by about 9 inches.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Tax Commissioner Cory Fong says the state’s strong economy is leading to continued record growth in taxable sales and purchases.
Fong says taxable sales and purchases in the state during the last three months of 2012 totaled about $6.7 billion, up nearly 10 percent over the year. For calendar year 2012, the number was $25.2 billion, up about 29 percent.
Fong says all industries in North Dakota reported growth in 2012.
In the region, taxable sales and purchased for the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, were;
By County:
Barnes $23,182, 502…up 9%
Foster $22,460,460…up 39%
LaMoure $20,413,623..up 5.5%
Stutsman $78,239,899..up 1.54%
By City:
Carrington $22,173,554…up 40%
Jamestown $75,084,140…up 1.5%
Valley City $20,725,562…up 5.6%
The most explosive growth is coming from western North Dakota’s oil-producing region. Taxable sales and purchases in oil-rich Williams County totaled $4.6 billion for the year. That’s up more than 43 percent.
North Dakota Retail Association President Mike Rud (rood) calls the state’s economic growth “mindboggling” and “unprecedented.”
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – There’s a good chance that Devils Lake will rise this summer to within a half-foot of its 2011 record elevation of 1,454.3 feet.
The National Weather Service says there is an equal chance the lake will hit 1,453.8 feet this year. That’s half a foot higher than an outlook released in early May.
The increase is attributed to heavy rains that dropped more than 4 inches on parts of the Devils Lake Basin over the past week and a half. And more rain is expected this week.
Devils Lake rose about 32 feet and quadrupled in size between 1992 and 2011, devouring an estimated 161,000 acres of farmland.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An arrest warrant has been issued for a former North Dakota State University football player accused of not serving his community service time that was ordered after he admitted forging signatures on an election petition last fall.
Twenty-one-year-old Don Carter was one of 15 defendants who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of faking signatures on failed petitions seeking statewide votes to establish an outdoor heritage fund and legalize medical marijuana.
He’s accused of not completing his court-mandated community service.
Carter was due in court on Tuesday, but a spokeswoman for the Cass County Attorney’s Office says he didn’t show up. Authorities then issued an arrest warrant.
An arrest warrant was issued last month for another defendant who is also accused of failing to complete his community service.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Two North Dakota men have been sentenced to prison for driving while drunk and killing another driver or passenger.
U. S. Attorney Timothy Purdon announced Wednesday that 36-year-old Louis John Dunn was sentenced to three years and five months in prison. Dunn pleaded guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter in March.
Prosecutors say Dunn was driving drunk last October when he drove into the lane of on-coming traffic and struck Andrew Greywater, who later died from his injuries. The incident occurred on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation.
Purdon also announced that 38-year-old Jamie Lee Belgarde, of St. Michael, was sentenced to two years in prison. Belgarde pleaded guilty to rolling his vehicle after driving drunk and killing a passenger, his brother Donald Belgarde Jr.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A preliminary medical examiner’s report says a man who died several weeks after he reportedly hit his head during a scuffle outside of a Fargo strip club died from blunt head injury.
Thirty-eight-year-old Christopher Barr was allegedly pushed by a club employee during a fight at the Northern Gentleman’s Club on April 13. He died about a month later.
Fargo Deputy Police Chief Pat Claus says the investigation into Barr’s death remains open. Claus says he would not release details of the death, including the manner of death or whether Barr had alcohol or drugs in his system.
CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) – It will be weeks before a dollar figure is placed on flood damage in northeastern North Dakota’s Pembina County.
Emergency Manager Andrew Kirking tells KFGO radio that it’s easy to see that there’s “a ton of damage” to infrastructure, but officials are still tallying how much. And farmers aren’t able to get into their fields yet to check on damage.
The flooding was caused by five days of steady rain. Water overwhelmed the small town of Crystal, and pressure on a dam on the Tongue River prompted the precautionary 2 1/2-day evacuation of the city of Cavalier.
Dennis Reep with the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service says the chain of 10 earthen retention dams on the Tongue River withstood the flooding with only minor damage.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Funeral services have been scheduled for former North Dakota state Rep. Gordon Berg.
Gilbertson Funeral Home says Berg died at a Devils Lake nursing home on Saturday, four days shy of his 86th birthday. His funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, followed by a burial in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
Berg served seven terms in the state House as a Democrat, from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. He also was active in water issues in the Devils Lake Basin for many years.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Dickinson truck driver has been sentenced for illegally dumping salt water in the western North Dakota oil patch.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm) says it’s the first criminal conviction for a violation of state Industrial Commission rules. He says the group that regulates the oil and gas industry in the state wants to send a message that anyone who intentionally pollutes the environment will face serious consequences.
Salt water is a waste product of oil production. Benjamin LeBaron was accused of illegally dumping it in Williams County last August.
LeBaron pleaded guilty to a felony charge and was given a one-year suspended jail sentence, ordered to pay $1,025 in fines and fees, and ordered to complete 50 hours of community service. His attorney calls it a fair sentence.

Syria’s main opposition group has demanded Assad’s departure top the agenda of peace talks, tentatively planned for next month in Geneva. In an interview with a Lebanese TV station, the Syrian foreign minister says his government would attend the talks “with every good intention,” but any deal reached would have to be put to a referendum.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is declining to confirm reports that a U.S. drone killed the Pakistani Taliban’s second-in-command. But spokesman Jay Carney says if the reports are true, the death of Waliur Rehman (wah-lee-UR’ REH’-man) would deprive the militant group of its chief military strategist who he says was involved in “horrific attacks” against America at a CIA base in Afghanistan and against Pakistani civilians and soldiers.
BAGHDAD (AP) – Iraqi police say evening bomb attacks at two Baghdad markets have killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A federal investigation of a truck stop chain owned by the family of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (HAZ’-lam) has produced a pair of guilty pleas. A regional sales director and an accounts representative for Pilot each pleaded guilty to conspiracy in U.S. District Court in Knoxville, Tenn. Prosecutors allege members of Pilot’s sales team deliberately withheld rebates to boost Pilot profits and pad sales commissions. The company is run by the governor’s brother, Jimmy Haslam, who also owns the Cleveland Browns.
