at a crew camp in the western North Dakota oil patch has been

formally charged with murder, attempted murder and terrorizing.

Twenty-four-year-old Victor Lamont of Lufkin, Texas, is accused of killing 57-year-old Gerald Schild of Katy, Texas, and injuring 38-year-old Travis Lomax, of Fort Smith, Ark. Lomax was treated at a Minot hospital and released.

Authorities say the shooting happened late Saturday at the crew camp near Tioga. All three men were working for a Wisconsin-based pipeline company.

Williams County Chief Deputy Verlan Kvande (KWAHN’-dee) tells The Forum newspaper that Lamont also is accused of threatening two other company workers.

Court documents do not list an attorney for Lamont.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – After a chase that reached 100 mph,

Grand Forks Police have arrested a man sought in earlier car

chases.

31-year-old Juan Angel Robles of Grand Forks was caught Tuesday

after his car collided with a construction vehicle on a county road and got stuck on a guard rail or a small bridge west of Merrifield.

Robles was sought for a Friday chase that ended when police

called off the pursuit because of the danger to the public.

He also is suspected of eluding police after a chase Sunday in which the suspect struck an officer with a stolen vehicle and

dragged him for a short distance.

The officer fired a shot at the man but apparently missed.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – Staff at Theodore Roosevelt National

Park in western North Dakota used flashlights and horses to rescue a hiker after he became dehydrated and texted for help.

Park spokeswoman Eileen Andes says 23-year-old Andrew Sparks was well-prepared for a two-night outing in the park’s North Unit, but he lost a water bottle. The high temperature in the area on Monday was 96 degrees.

Sparks texted for help about 7:30 p.m. Monday and was brought out of the backcountry shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Andes did not know where Sparks is from.

Heather Presler died Sunday at a hospital in Turtle Lake.

The McLean County Sheriff’s Department says she died from injuries she suffered in the accident on her family farm Sunday afternoon.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man accused of selling

$1,400 worth of painkillers to undercover agents has pleaded guilty in federal court.

James Grant, of Fort Yates, is charged with two counts of

possession with intent to distribute morphine. He faces a maximum

sentence of 10 years in prison.

Authorities say Grant sold the morphine pills from his house in the so-called Boot Hill District in Fort Yates on two separate

occasions.

The first sale was for $500 for five pills on April 21.

The second sale was for $900 for 10 pills on May 22.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 17 in Bismarck.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Law enforcement officers say three people

arrested for theft of copper wire from a Bismarck business may have been

involved in similar crimes in North Dakota and other states.

38-year-old Soran Kareen Kaka of West Fargo, 31-year-old Jerry

Eugene Dean of Fargo, and 27-year-old Joel Lumbreras of Carrizo

Spring, Texas, were charged with felony burglary and felony theft

of property for a break-in last week at RK Electric in Bismarck.

According to an affidavit filed by a North Dakota Bureau of

Criminal Investigation special agent, the burglary in Bismarck is

similar to an earlier one in Fargo and others in South Dakota and

Iowa. However, none of the three suspects has been charged in any

burglaries or thefts other than the one in Bismarck.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota has its first confirmed human case of West Nile virus this year.

The state Health Department says the Dickey County man in his 50s needed hospital care.

Agency program manager Michelle Feist (fyst) says it’s a reminder how serious the mosquito-borne illness can be, especially for older people and those with weakened immune systems.

Last year, the state had four human cases of West Nile.

The virus was first confirmed in North Dakota in 2002. The highest human case total in the state was 617 in 2003.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota farm groups say they’ll oppose an anti-animal cruelty measure if it gets on the ballot.

The initiative would make it a felony crime to commit aggravated cruelty against a cat, dog or horse — such as burning, suffocating and beating to death. The punishment could be up to five years in prison.

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, the Farm Bureau and the Farmers Union are among the organizations that don’t like the idea.

Farmers Union President Woody Barth says the measure uses “inflammatory language” and doesn’t talk about the most common forms of animal mistreatment in North Dakota.

Supporters of the measure turned in more than 25,000 signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger on Tuesday. They only need about 13,500 names to qualify for the November election.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some of North Dakota’s new group of voter

initiatives had to pay people to circulate their petitions.

A consulting firm was paid $145,000 to run the

signature-gathering effort for a proposal to put some of North

Dakota’s oil tax collections into a conservation fund.

A campaign to put a medical marijuana initiative on the November ballot spent about $45,000 on petition carriers.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger says it’s uncommon for initiative campaigns to use paid petition circulators. He says the $145,000 spent by the conservation fund backers is surprising.

North Dakota law restricts how petition carriers may be paid.

They can’t be paid by the signature.

Jaeger says he believes the law helps cut down incentives for abuse.

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Supporters of the University of North Dakota’s retired Fighting Sioux nickname say they will wait until December to submit petitions for an initiated measure.

The petitioners faced a midnight deadline on Wednesday to turn in signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger in order for the issue to be placed on the November ballot.

The Spirit Lake Committee for Understanding and Respect, and the Fighting Sioux Ballot Measures Committee is proposing a constitutional amendment that says UND’s sports teams must always be known as the Fighting Sioux.

Sean Johnson, spokesman for the two groups, says the nickname supporters did not want their issue to be lumped in with other ballot measures in November.

Nickname backers have until Dec. 12 to submit 27,000 signatures in order to make the next ballot.
