FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State star linebacker Travis Beck has been charged with felony aggravated assault.

Beck was charged with assault Monday in East Central District Court. The charge stems from an incident late Saturday night outside a Fargo bar.

It was the second time Beck has had a run-in with the law in his NDSU career. He was fined and sentenced to 40 hours of community service after pleading guilty to underage drinking. A charge of resisting a police officer was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Beck was named the most valuable player in the 2011 Division I Football Championship Subdivision title game. It was the first of NDSU’s back-to-back national titles.

NDSU head coach Craig Bohl could not be immediately reached for comment.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A woman is in custody after an overnight standoff in Grand Forks.

Authorities say the woman was armed and apparently suicidal, and refused to leave her home. Some area residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The incident began late Sunday when emergency workers responded to a report of a person suffering a heart attack. Officers later determined that the person had been in a confrontation with the woman.

The woman was taken into custody about 5 a.m. Monday and brought to a hospital for evaluation. She was not immediately charged with a crime.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A former Fargo investment broker has pleaded guilty to bilking 19 investors out more than $900,000.

65-year-old Robert Medhus (MAY-hoos) pleaded guilty to 16 felony charges Monday in East Central District Court.

Medhus will be sentenced after a presentence investigation is completed. Prosecutors say they will ask for a sentence of eight years in prison. There is no plea agreement.

Prosecutors say Medhus forged client checks, created fake investment account statements and failed to invest client assets as promised.

Kelly Mathias is the supervisor of investigations for the North Dakota Securities Department. She says some of the investors are in their 90s.

Medhus and his attorney, John Goff, declined to comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Load restrictions have been lifted on most North Dakota highways.

Seasonal load limits guard against damage to roads made susceptible by the spring thaw. They’re lifted when roadbeds have stabilized enough to handle normal traffic.

The state Transportation Department says restrictions were lifted on most highways Monday. Some highways still have weight restrictions.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Agriculture Department has scheduled a dozen sites for this year’s round of Project Safe Send chemical collections.

The program gives state residents a way to dispose of unusable herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides and fungicides free of charge. It’s funded by fees that pesticide manufacturers pay to register their products in North Dakota.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says that over the past 20 years, thousands of people have brought more than 3 million pounds of chemicals to Project Safe Send sites.

This year’s collections begin July 9 in Underwood and end July 25 in Casselton. In between there will be collections in Kenmare, Minot, Watford City, Bowman, Ashley, Jamestown, Cooperstown, Wahpeton, Adams and Grand Forks.

In sports…

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The all-time leading scorers in University of North Dakota women’s basketball and men’s hockey are part of this year’s class being inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

Jenny Crouse led UND to three straight NCAA Division II women’s basketball titles and ended her career with 2,284 points. The UND program went 116-12 during her four years.

Greg Johnson finished his UND career with 272 points, including a WCHA-record 198 assists. He was a three-time finalist for the Hobey Baker award, given to the top player in college hockey. He went on to play a dozen seasons in the NHL, with four teams.

The hall of fame induction ceremony is Sept. 14.

In world and national news…

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – George Zimmerman has had a look Monday at the people who might decide whether he committed second-degree murder. His trial in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is getting under way with jury selection near Orlando, Fla. The first group of 100 potential jurors today filled out questionnaires, as prosecutors and defense lawyers look for six jurors and four alternates. Jury selection is expected to take all week, at least. Defense lawyers will be trying to convince them that Zimmerman believed his life was in danger when he shot the unarmed teen.

HONG KONG (AP) – Will he be safe in Hong Kong? Not necessarily. The U.S. defense contractor who says he leaked information on classified U.S. surveillance programs is hoping to stay out of U.S. custody by taking refuge there. Although it has some autonomy, Hong Kong ultimately answers to Beijing, which is often at odds with Washington. But the U.S. is one of the largest investors in Hong Kong, and there’s an extradition treaty between the two.

BERLIN (AP) – There’s another sign of the international backlash over the recently-disclosed electronic surveillance efforts of the U.S. government. Germany’s chancellor will be meeting with President Barack Obama next week in Berlin, and she’s planning to raise the issue. Germany wants to know if the privacy rights of any of its citizens have been infringed. Germans and other foreigners routinely use Internet sites based in the United States for voice and data communications.

BEIRUT (AP) – The leader of al-Qaida is looking to end the squabbling between the terror network’s branches in Syria and Iraq. He’s ordering the two groups to remain separate. An attempted merger led to a leadership dispute between them.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) – Students are back at Santa Monica College in southern California for the first time since Friday’s shooting rampage. They returned today for final exams and to retrieve backpacks, cars and other belongings that they left behind. Still off limits is the library, where police shot and killed a heavily armed gunman who they say had killed five people. A candlelight vigil is planned this evening in front of the library.
