FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota U.S. Senate candidate Rick Berg
has changed a television ad to respond to objections from the YWCA
in Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.
The ad features the Republican’s role in building a new shelter
for victims of domestic violence.
In a statement Friday, the YWCA’s board said it can’t get
involved in political campaigns, and the ad made it look like the
group was endorsing Berg.
The ad features former YWCA board chairwoman Tammy Miller. After
the complaints, the spot had some text added to describe it as a
“personal testimonial.”
The text says the ad is not a YWCA endorsement of Berg.
In the ad, Miller says Berg was asked to donate to the shelter
project, and he got so interested that he ended up managing it.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Union leaders say they hope American
Crystal Sugar Co. chief executive Dave Berg will reconsider his
decision to skip a community meeting about the company’s extended
worker lockout.
The meeting is scheduled Aug. 18 at the American Legion hall in
East Grand Forks, Minn. Organizers say it’s open to sugar beet
growers, company shareholders, workers and managers.
It will be moderated by former North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Sarah Vogel.
About 1,300 Crystal workers have been locked out of their jobs
for more than a year at facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota and
Iowa.
The company imposed the lockout after contract negotiations
broke down.
Union members have voted three times to reject what the
company says is its final offer.
Union officials say the contract weakens seniority and job security rights.

The woman says Berg was approached for a donation, and he was so interested that he ended up managing the project.
Berg’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
