A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Helen Oberlander was born January 9, 1924 on a farm home near Napoleon, N.D., the daughter of Adam and Christine Oberlander. She attended grade school and graduated from Napoleon in 1944 where she taught country school from 1944-1945. She married Harold G. Schmuhl in 1946. They farmed near Jamestown and she continued to teach country school for three years. In 1960 she started to work for J.C. Penney. She retired in 1985.Helen married Melvin Burleson in 1983 in Jamestown and worked for the James River Senior Center for several years. She was a member of the Presbyterian church since 1953 and served two terms as a Deacon. She enjoyed sewing, basket weaving, Red Hats, and having coffee with friends.She is survived by son; Dean (Jean) Schmuhl, Jamestown, step daughter; Jolleen (earnest) Weick, Rochester, MN, step son; Lynn (Ritagail) Burleson, Bartlesville, OK, daughter-in-law; Sue Schmuhl, Jamestown, brother; Larry Oberlander, Plain Valley, CA, four grandchildren; Kurt Schmuhl, Moyock, NC, Todd Schmuhl, Jamestown, Joey Schmuhl (Rob Burg), Wahpeton, ND, Jay Schmuhl, Fargo, ND, 11 step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several step great grandchildren.Helen is preceded in death by her parents; Adam and Christina Oberlander, Husbands; Harold Schmuhl and Melvin Burleson, son; Darold Schmuhl, sisters; Mary Haid, Emma Bellon, Frieda Carstensen, Ester Pfeifle, Brothers; Theo, Alvin, Walter, Otto, and Edwin Oberlander.

Helen’s memorial service will be scheduled for the summer of 2021.
