Ethel Maulding – Friday Nov 27, 2020

Ethel Arlene (Manns) Maulding, 93 of Montpelier, ND died Friday, November 27, 2020 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND.

Ethel Manns was born on November 25, 1927 on the homestead of Albert and Olive (Tommerdahl) Manns. Ethel was very proud of the Manns name and the honor to have a township named after her grandparents. She was confirmed in 1950 in the Montpelier Lutheran Church.

She walked 1-1/4 miles to school with her sisters to Manns School #1 through the eighth grade. The next two years she went to Montpelier High School with her cousin, Dorothy, her Uncle Jack Manns daughter. Either Jack or his wife, Marie, would take them to Montpelier on Monday to stay at the Fred Nicholls home for the week. Then one of them would go back and get them on Friday. This worked for two years until the school closed the high school. To get her junior year of high school, she stayed with Inez Boelter and babysat her son, Lyle, and took care of him while she took her third year of high school by correspondence. With the high school closed her senior year she would take the train to Jamestown, then to Amenia, ND and stayed with her sister, Lillian so she could graduate from Amenia High School.

Summertime between school years she would help out on the farm driving the D John Deere plowing and digging, and riding the binder and shocking grain. It was said, when she was sent out to plant the corn that her rows were straight as any man’s rows. She loved to ride horseback. She helped out with gardening and helped with butchering and canning chickens. Her and her Mother Olive, would can chicken all the time at the farm. It always amazed people how two kind hearted women could kill and can more than 40 chickens.

In 1943, she moved with her mother and sister, Alpha, to Montpelier to live in the Presbyterian Church Parsonage. She helped her mother with cleaning of the church as payment for renting the Church Parsonage. After graduating she moved to Jamestown and worked for the Anne Carlson School.

On October 25, 1948, she married a trucker by the name of Bill Maulding. They raised six children while Bill was on the road and they still did a wonderful job. If there was a movie that the children could go to at the theatre, on the corner of Hwy 46 while Bill was out on the road, Ethel would take the children to the outdoor theatre.

They lived in Montpelier for 36 years. All those years, Ethel worked for the US Postal Service in Montpelier, plus helping driving truck with Bill hauling grain to Duluth and cattle wherever they went. She also did all the bookwork for the trucking company until 2015.

In 1982, Ethel and Bill bought a house built by the vocational students in Jamestown. The Montpelier students participated in the building of their house in their building trades class.

Ethel was very active in Lutheran Lay Renewal, Naomi Circle, Cub Scouts as a leader, Sunday School Teacher, and sang in the church choir. Along with many other church women in Montpelier they would make quilts and give to the needy. She loved flowers and raised many in beautiful gardens. She raised a huge vegetable garden every year and loved canning.

Ethel would insist every year to go on a camping trip somewhere. Those trips took them to the East Coast to Virginia, Washington, DC, etc., West Coast to Washington, Oregon, the Seattle World’s Fair, Pikes Peak, Flathead Lake in Montana to pick cherries, the Black Hills, Medora, Calgary Stampede, Las Vegas and many other places.

Ethel enjoyed the racehorses that she and Bill owned. Watching them grow up and then winning a race or two in Fargo, Billings, MT, Baker, Mt, Great Falls, MT, Des Moines, IA, Shakopee, MN, Dakota City and Grand Island, NE, Phoenix, AZ, Chicago, IL, and Indiana.

Ethel loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and their spouses. She has a few favorites, one in particular that used to haul ice cream. She loved hosting her visitors and showing the horses and their North Dakota life to their visitors from Seattle and everywhere. Everyone should love someone like that.

In 2014, Ethel developed Parkinson’s and all it brought into her life, but she did not give up and worked very hard to not let it define her.

Ethel will be deeply missed by her husband, Bill, children: Sharon Maulding, Jamestown, Dan (Judith) Maulding, Montpelier, Suzie (Dan) Koltiska, Sheridan, WY, Bonnie Larson, Jamestown, Peggy Maulding, Plymouth, MN, Donna Enzminger, San Diego, CA, grandchildren: Tara (Matt) Stockert, Ben Maulding, Brandon (Kalyn) Maulding, Tracy Maulding, Christie (Bobby) Leslie, Kelly Koltiska, Taylor Enzminger, and Sam Enzminger, great-grandchildren: Nick, Parker, Alex, and Elaina Stockert, Luke Olivia, Cecilia, and Nolan Maulding, Jaxson, Ava, and Claire Maulding.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Olive Manns, siblings: Lillian (Joe) Shafer, Albert (Helen) Manns, Frances (Lee) Hunt, Alpha (Jim) DeLair, a baby girl stillborn, nieces: Grace and Jean Shafer, Myrle Manns, and nephews: John Hunt and Tom Manns.

In February, 2020, Ethel moved into Ave Maria Village. On November 10, she tested positive for Covid-19 and was moved to the Covid Unit. She remained there for ten days symptom free and returned back to Bison Lane on Monday, November 23.

Visitation: 4 pm – 7 pm, Friday, December 4, 2020 at Williams Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Committal Service: 2:30pm, Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Montpelier Lutheran Cemetery, Montpelier.
