Harriet Joyce Meiklejohn Kartes, 92, of Jamestown, ND, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.

Harriet was born January 28, 1928, on the family farm one mile southeast of Dickey, ND, the daughter of Harry and Elsie Meiklejohn.  The doctor came from Marion and had just delivered a son to Elsie’s sister on the same day, so Harriet has a cousin with the same birthdate.  She thought her folks would have preferred a boy because they already had a girl.  Harriet spent a lot of time indoors due to her fair skin and helped her mother with the housekeeping.  She attended school in Dickey for 12 years and graduated Salutatorian in 1945.  On March 7, 1946, she married one and only, Charles Kartes.  They went on to have 6 children, one of which (Steven) passed away at 5 months and the other five (Mark, John, Virginia, Elizabeth and Thomas) where raised on the family farm.  She spent her days working on the farm and tending to her large family.  Her hobbies were cooking, canning, gardening and keeping up with the kid’s activities.  Harriet was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.  One of her most memorable times was attending a World Series game with her nephew, Keith Meiklejohn.  She also was awarded the Master Angler from Canada.

After her son Tom married and took over the family farm, Harriet and Charles moved to Jamestown.  In their retirement they traveled to the East Coast, Alaska and often to Arizona.  Eventually they purchased a condo in Arizona and enjoyed playing cards, touring and socializing with their Midwest friends there.

Harriet is survived by her children, John Kartes, Virginia (John) Kleven, Elizabeth Dietrich, Tom (Theresa) Kartes, and daughter-in-law, Corine Kartes; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Gary (Ramona) Meiklejohn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; two sons, Mark and Steven; daughter-in-law, Mary Jean; son-in-law, Gary Dietrich; and sister, Doris Martin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Assumption Catholic Cemetery, c/o James Schaub, 350 5th Street, Dickey, ND 58431
