North Dakota health officials are reporting a dramatic drop in hospitalizations because of the coronavirus, due mostly to finding and fixing a computer glitch. The state Department of Health said Wednesday that the adjustment was made after officials resolved a problem with the flow of data in the last week from caseworkers to the state’s reporting system. The result was a drop from 88 hospitalizations to 55. The last time hospitalizations were that low was late August. The state’s hospital tracker shows there are 48 staffed intensive care unit beds and 381 staffed inpatient beds available in North Dakota.

North Dakota’s rate of positive examinations for COVID-19 remained low in the health department’s daily update, which included its usual sparse amount of processed tests from the weekend. The update Monday included 69 new cases from 2,194 tests, a positivity rate of 3.63%. The COVID Tracking Project reports that North Dakota’s rolling average number of daily new cases over the past two weeks has decreased by more than 27%. A total of 95,934 people have tested positive since the start of the pandemic. The state has seen a steady decline of daily cases since peaking in mid-November and ranks 48th per capita in the country for new cases over the last two weeks. No new deaths were reported Monday.

The North Dakota Department of Health  reported Sunday that vaccine priority groups originally announced on Dec. 31 will remain in effect. The reminder was issued in response to the federal government’s recommendation earlier this week that states expand the range of individuals immediately eligible to receive the vaccine, while noting it remains the state’s decision.

North Dakota health officials are reporting a drop in hospitalizations due to the coronavirus and a low percentage of positive daily tests as the state prepares to end its mask mandate and ease business restrictions. The Sunday update showed that hospitalizations were down 10 from Saturday, to 85. Officials say 152 of 4,781 tests processed in the last day came back positive, for a daily positivity rate of 3.61%. There were three new deaths. Data released Saturday by The COVID Tracking Project showed about 371 new cases per 100,000 people in North Dakota over the past two weeks, which ranks 49th in the country per capita. One in every 658 people in North Dakota tested positive in the past week.

North Dakota’s COVID-19 update showed no deaths for a third straight day. That’s a mark that hasn’t been seen in nearly six months although health officials noted that virus reports are typically sporadic over the weekend. The two previous days of no fatalities did not change the state’s death toll ranking by Johns Hopkins University researchers. They show North Dakota at sixth highest per capita in the country at about about 178 deaths per 100,000 people. A total of 1,352 people have died from complications due to the coronavirus. Health officials have confirmed 16 deaths this month, after 272 on December and 494 in November.

North Dakota reported an additional 125 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday and zero new deaths, as the state is seeing some loosened restrictions on business capacities. Overall, more than 94,000 people have been infected with COVID-19 and more than 1,300 have died in North Dakota since the pandemic began. The new figures come a day after the state lowered its risk assessment from high risk to moderate risk. The state had initially raised its risk assessment in early November, as cases of COVID-19 were surging. But numbers began decreasing after a statewide mask mandate and business restrictions were implemented.

Please note: as of 12/26/20, daily COVID-19 updates on the weekend will be delivered through the NDDoH web dashboard; the social media map & numbers will be published Monday-Friday.

Health departments are asking people who test positive for the coronavirus to warn friends, family and co-workers themselves. Health officials say do-it-yourself tracing is not ideal, but with infections and hospitalizations soaring nationwide, it’s likely the most effective way to reach people who may be at risk. Health officials say it’s taking too long before tracers learn of positive tests. What’s more, many people won’t pick up the phone or refuse to answer questions when tracers call. Sometimes, there are simply too many positive tests to call everyone. Officials fear transmission will only get worse as people gather for the holidays.

COVID-19 Test Results
The results listed are from the previous day. Additional data can be found on the NDDoH website.

On Wednesday, Dec. 16, the North Dakota Department of Health reported a net decrease in hospitalizations of 117 individuals. Hospitalizations in our state have fallen rapidly in the past few weeks, and while much of this difference reflects newly discharged cases, part of this drop reflects a quality control effort as case workers catch up with these changes following a recent surge in cases.

Of the 146 hospitalizations whose status was changed from current to discharged, 74 had been discharged in the past two weeks and the remainder were discharged prior to Dec. 1. This was due to a variety of factors, including case managers catching up with follow-up work after a surge of new cases in November; lags in reporting between when patients were actually discharged from facilities to when the NDDoH was notified of the discharges through the Health Information Network; and inconsistent data entry.

“The team took time yesterday to verify every individual currently marked as hospitalized and found a number who had been previously discharged,” said Disease Control Director Kirby Kruger. “In the future, the team will be working more actively with facilities to ensure the information is up to date and accurate and will continue to check the Health Information Network daily for hospitalization information.”

North Dakota health officials are reporting 13 additional deaths due to complications from COVID-19 and 340 new positive cases. The North Dakota Health Department’s report Tuesday comes a day after the state received its first doses of a coronavirus vaccine and quickly set about giving it to hospital workers on the front lines of the fight against the disease. The deaths confirmed Tuesday bring the statewide virus death toll to 1,170 since the pandemic began. The state’s death count ranks 41st in the country but is the fifth highest per capita at 152 deaths per 100,000 people.

COVID-19 Test Results
The results listed are from the previous day. Additional data can be found on the NDDoH website.

A couple of things to note:

  • The NDDoH is following the guidance from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) – the independent professional body that determines case definitions for the country. CSTE guidance and the CDC indicate that someone who has a positive antigen test for COVID-19 should be considered a probable case. Probable cases receive the same level of case investigation and follow-up as cases confirmed using a PCR test.
  • PCR tests and antigen tests are displayed separately on the first page of the dashboard and are broken out into daily and cumulative totals on the second page. For the rest of the graphs and maps, totals include both PCR tests and antigen tests combined.
  • Antigen tests are not taken into account in the percent positivity. Some testing facilities are not reporting all antigen testing. As a result, we do not know the total number of negatives and total tests completed to be able to calculate a positivity rate.
  • Positive antigen tests have been added to the totals. The past positive antigen tests and 12 deaths reported yesterday are reflected on the dashboard on the actual day they were resulted. So, the daily new positives reported today are the PCR tests and antigen tests reported from yesterday, as is usually done.

COVID-19 Test Results
The results listed are from the previous day. Additional data can be found on the NDDoH website.

The team continues to work on a solution and is hoping to have all of the pages up soon. For now, you’ll find the first page of the dashboard on the website.

A couple of things to note:

  • The NDDoHis following the guidance from the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) – the independent professional body that determines case definitions for the country. CSTE guidance and the CDC indicate that someone who has a positive antigen test for COVID-19 should be considered a probable case. Probable cases receive the same level of case investigation and follow-up as cases confirmed using a PCR test.
  • PCR tests and antigen tests are displayed separately on the first pageof the dashboard and are broken out into daily and cumulative totals on the second page.

Previously

North Dakota health officials are confirming 30 new deaths and 24 new hospitalizations due to the coronavirus, a reality check from the last two weeks when the positivity rate of COVID-19 tests has steadily fallen. The state Department of Health also announced that its daily update of virus cases will now include people who take the rapid antigen tests, not just the nasal swab tests that have been employed since early in the pandemic. A dozen people who took the rapid tests eventually died but the health department does not consider them part of the daily report because they were spread out among the last two months. The daily high for deaths was 37 on Nov. 24.

COVID-19 Test Results
The results listed are from the previous day. Additional data can be found on the NDDoH website.

Rapid antigen tests (BinaxNOW, etc.) will be added to the website today. We’ll issue an updated news release when the website is live – your patience is appreciated.

• PCR tests and antigen tests are displayed separately on the first page of the dashboard and are broken out into daily and cumulative totals on the second page. For the rest of the graphs and maps, totals include both PCR tests and antigen tests combined.
  • 1,871 antigen tests have been added to the totals. In addition, 12 deaths of individuals with COVID-19 who had tested positive with an antigen test. The past positive antigen tests and deaths are reflected on the dashboard on the actual day they were resulted. So, the daily new positives reported today are the PCR tests and antigen tests reported from yesterday, as is usually done. New deaths added to the dashboard:

  • Antigen tests are not taken into account in the percent positivity. Some testing facilities are not reporting all antigen testing. As a result, we do not know the total number of negatives and total tests completed to be able to calculate a positivity rate.

BY THE NUMBERS

1,193,850 – Total tests completed since the pandemic began

11.18% – Daily Positivity Rate**

4,774 – Total Active Cases

+16 Individuals from Yesterday

2,287 – Individuals Recovered from Yesterday (561 with a recovery date of yesterday****)

Please note that 19 of the 30 deaths were outside the typical 0-3-day lag in death reporting.
