He was raised on various farms until 1951 when the family purchased a farm south of Cleveland. He attended Country Schools until 8th grade, then attended Cleveland High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1949. Orlo was very involved in 4-H, Baseball, and Basketball. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954, serving in Fort Maddox, NY and attaining the rank of Sergeant.

After being honorably discharged from the service Orlo returned to the family farm and continued his lifelong commitment to being a steward of the land as a farmer.  He farmed with his father and uncle, Lynn Oleson.  He took great pride in his livestock, milking cows, herding cattle, and raising sheep.

He was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and bowling.  He met the love of his life, Shirley Wilen, and they were married on February 16th, 1980.  Together they lived in the house Orlo built with his father and brothers in law on the family farm and continued to farm and ranch there.  They traveled to many locations, returning with stories to share with family and friends. Orlo and Shirley welcomed several foreign exchange students into their home and family, over the years.  The coffee was always on for visits from family and friends.

Orlo was a long-time board member of the Dakota Valley Rural Electric Cooperative and served as Sinclair township supervisor for many years.  He was active in the Gackle Country Club, bowling leagues, and pool leagues.  He was a member of the American Legion.

Orlo was an amazing Husband, Son, Brother, and Uncle.  He was an excellent example of what a gentleman should be.  His nephews and nieces were blessed to have him as a mentor, and role model.  They never saw him angry, heard a cross word, or heard him cuss.  They can tell you countless stories of fishing trips, gopher hunting, carpentry, woodworking, gardening, farming, and ranching with him.  He was a man of unending patience, loyalty, and understanding.  He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
