STEELE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are working to determine the
cause of a fire that destroyed a motel in the North Dakota town of
Steele.
The Lone Steer Motel in the town just off Interstate 94 burned
to the ground Sunday morning.
All of the two dozen people in the building got out safely, though some had to exit second-floor windows, make a short drop to another roof and then jump into the bed of a pickup truck parked next to the motel.
Police Chief David Feland says arson has not been ruled out. Two arson investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are being called in.

She thanked Coborn’s for donating profits from their root beer float stand at Crazy Days…Kemps contributed a portable soda fountain for it.
Ms Barnard pointed out that donations to the shelter are made from profits from recycling beverage cans and used batteries.
She said just bring them to Gerdau Ameristeel at 1510 10st SE, open M-F 8am-5pm. Just let them know you would like JRHS’s account credited for your drop off.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – A Jamestown man accused of killing a
Somali immigrant is to stand trial this week at the Stutsman County
Courthouse.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in the murder and
criminal conspiracy trial of 34-year-old Leron Howard.
He has pleaded not guilty in the April 2011 death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali
Ahmed, who was beaten and stabbed before his body was dumped in a
ditch near Spiritwood.
A Jamestown jury in February convicted 22-year-old Janelle Cave
on manslaughter and criminal conspiracy charges in the case.
She is required to testify in Howard’s trial as part of her sentence.
Stutsman County Courthouse security will be stepped up during the trial as it was during Cave’s trial starting at the main entrance, which will effect courthouse visitors to the main floor offices and the upper flood courtrooms.
Stutsman County Sheriff, Chad Kaiser says metal detectors will aid six officers, adding that those attending the trial should not bring handbag, or cell phones into the courthouse.
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) — A 31-year-old man sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars for shooting and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher is appealing his conviction.
Daniel Wacht is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for killing Kurt Johnson of Cooperstown.
His attorney, Steve Mottinger, indicated he will appeal state District Judge James Hovey’s denial of the defense’s attempt to suppress evidence found in Wacht’s rented house Mottinger argued previously that the probable cause provided by investigators to get three warrants to search Wacht’s van and home was insufficient.
On the third search, Johnson’s severed head was found buried under two feet of dirt in the crawl space in Wacht’s basement, with a bullet hole in the forehead.
Prosecutors said Wacht shot Johnson after a night of drinking on Dec. 31, 2010, then cut off his head. Johnson’s body hasn’t been found.
Investigators said Wacht, who was known as “Machine Gun Head” for a tattoo above his right ear, killed Johnson to show the Aryan Nation he could run a local group. Wacht was a fugitive from charges in California at the time of the killing.
A jury in Cooperstown deliberated for two hours on April 24 before convicting Wacht of murdering Johnson. Hovey sentenced Wacht on Aug. 1.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who was convicted of hiring a hit
man to kill his son-in-law is asking the North Dakota Supreme Court
to give him a new trial.
Gene Kirkpatrick is serving a life prison term without a chance
for parole for the killing of Fargo dentist Philip Gattuso
(gah-TOO’-soh).
Kirkpatrick was convicted of hiring a man to kill Gattuso.
Gattuso was found beaten to death with a hammer in his Fargo home
in October 209.
Court testimony indicated Kirkpatrick didn’t want Gattuso
raising his young granddaughter.
Kirkpatrick’s daughter was married to Gattuso when she died in March 2009.
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the case on Sept. 4.
Kirkpatrick says the trial judge shouldn’t have allowed his
statements to police to be used against him at his trial.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Supreme Court will be
deciding whether locked-out workers at American Crystal Sugar Co.
should collect unemployment benefits.
A group of more than 200 Crystal workers is appealing a judge’s
decision that North Dakota law doesn’t allow them to get benefits.
The Supreme Court has scheduled arguments in the case on Sept.
18.
State law says North Dakota workers can’t get unemployment money
if they’re involved in a labor dispute.
But an attorney for the Crystal employees says the law refers to strikes, not a lockout.
American Crystal employees have been locked out of company
factories in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa for a year.
Locked-out workers in Minnesota and Iowa were eligible for
unemployment.
Court filings say the North Dakota Supreme Court has never ruled
on the issue.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – American Crystal Sugar Co. farmers are
starting their beet harvest this week.
It’s the earliest start in the Red River Valley cooperative’s history.
The pre-pile harvest is to begin Tuesday, with growers getting just
enough beets out of the ground to get Crystal’s five processing
plants running.
The harvest is starting earlier than normal because farmers got
in the fields earlier last spring.
Crystal spokesman Jeff Schweitzer says officials will work to make sure the harvest during warmer weather doesn’t lead to rotting problems in the beet piles at the plants.
The full-scale harvest is scheduled to begin in early October,
the traditional time.
The valley’s other beet co-op, Minn-Dak Farmers, also is
starting its pre-pile harvest Tuesday.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Officials with a state-funded program that
aims to turn research on North Dakota college campuses into jobs
are touting their private donations.
The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission says the
nearly $40 million in state funds that have gone toward the program
attracted matching investments of $157 million from 185 companies
in six years.
The program has been credited with creating 973 jobs at an estimated annual payroll of $52.1 million.
Mark Nisbet, an Xcel Energy executive and chairman of the
commission, says the Centers of Excellence are supporting
businesses that are making investments in North Dakota.
Nisbet cites a decision by Caterpillar to invest $50 million to
expand its plant in West Fargo, to have access to expertise at
North Dakota State University.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The crime rate in North Dakota’s largest city
has been going down in the last five years, but police say the
trend may be changing in downtown Fargo.
Police say the number of reported crimes in the downtown
district is up 62 percent through July, compared to reports at the
same point a year ago.
Crimes against people are up 15 percent.
Police Lt. Joel Vettel says the percentage increases tend to look
bad when you begin with a low crime rate.
The statistics include reports from an area that spans from Main
Avenue going north to 6th Avenue North and from the Red River going
west to University Drive.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Officials say a new general aviation services
center in western North Dakota will allow larger planes to fly into
the heart of the oil patch.
The $2.5 million Minot Aero Center will include a building with
a lobby, offices, garage space and day rooms for pilots.
An adjoining heated hangar has a 119-foot-wide and 28-foot-high
door to accommodate larger aircraft.
Officials say the hangar is expected to be ready by Jan. 1. The building is
scheduled to be completed by May 2013.
The center offers fueling services, aircraft charter and rental,
flight instruction, aircraft repair and hangar space.
STURGIS, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Highway Patrol says nine

DAVIE, Fla. (AP)- Six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson has
been released by the Miami Dolphins one day after he was arrested
in a domestic battery case involving his new wife.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) – Marcos Ambrose passed Brad Keselowski
on the final lap, then held him off in a fender-banging duel to win
the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International for the second

Kyle Busch was in control but was leaking oil on the track and
skidded sideways coming out of the first turn of the final lap.
Keselowski’s Dodge caromed off the side of the Busch’s Toyota and
Ambrose followed Keselowski through.
Jimmie Johnson was third, followed by Sonoma winner Clint Bowyer
and Sam Hornish Jr., giving Dodge two in the top five.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – For the next three days, President
Barack Obama will be on a bus tour of Iowa — and that’s the
longest campaign visit he’s made to any one state.
He’ll be sharing the Iowa spotlight today with Mitt Romney’s new running mate, Paul Ryan, who’s scheduled to visit the Iowa State Fair.
WASHINGTON (AP) – A top political adviser to President Barack
Obama is comparing Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as a running
mate to John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin four years ago.
David Axelrod tells CBS that conservatives may be excited about
Ryan, as they were about Palin — but that the choice is “not
going to be a plus” for Romney.
He calls Ryan a “certifiable right-wing ideologue.”
VATICAN CITY (AP) – A Vatican judge has ordered the pope’s
butler and a fellow lay employee to stand trial in the scandal
involving pilfered documents from Pope Benedict’s private
apartment.
The indictment accuses Paolo Gabriele, the butler under
arrest since May at the Vatican, of grand theft.
While the Vatican had insisted throughout the investigation that Gabriele was the only person under investigation, the indictment also orders trial
for another man who is charged with aiding and abetting Gabriele.
NEW YORK (AP) – New York’s Kennedy Airport is protected in part
