Jerry was born on February 27, 1936 in Valley City, ND to Frank and Mary (Puhr) Loibl, the middle of three sons. He attended Fingal School and graduated in 1954. In his teen years he worked for various farmers. He served in the U. S. Army from 1955-1956. He then worked 43 years with the Barnes County Highway Department. He had his hand in building many of the roads in the county, and also plowed much snow in the winter time.
In 1964 he married Gertrude Koller in Fingal. They lived for a short time in Valley City, and then moved to Fingal where they continued to live until his death.
Retirement did not mean slowing down. For quite a few years he worked as a farm helper in the spring and in the fall first for Kohler Farms and then for Darrell Holm, and these were times he truly enjoyed. He also spent countless hours outside – either in his garden (which seemed to get bigger the older he got), on his lawnmower, or toodling around town on his 4-wheeler. In the winter he was usually the first guy in town to be out with his snow blower, often times even before the snow was done falling!!
Jerry was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings, and would proudly wear his Vikings cap and jacket after a victory. He also kept up on most NFL games, and could sit and watch any of them. Toy tractor collecting was his hobby, and all the shelves at home are full of his treasures.
Holidays were always a highlight of the year, as that brought the kids and grandkids together at the house. He really enjoyed the 4th of July, and was usually starting to light off fireworks before it was even dark.
Jerry was a member of the Fingal American Legion, Fingal Wildlife, Donald J. Trader Last Man’s Club (now dissolved), Willis W. Weber Amvets and Color Guard, VFW Post 2764, VC Eagles, and the SAD Sacks. He also was a council member for many years for the City of Fingal.
He moved to Fingal at a young age, living almost his entire life there and was very proud of his small town.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Fingal; daughter, Marietta (Lyle) Behm of Fingal; daughter-in-law, Cindy Loibl of Rogers, ND; grandchildren, Rusty Loibl of Fingal, Lindsey Loibl of Valley City, Casey Behm of Fargo, ND, Jesse Behm of Wichita, KS, and Brady Behm of Valley City; and great grandson, Collin Loibl of Valley City; brother, Robert (Loretta) Loibl of Branson West, MO; in-laws, Cecelia Koller of Fingal, Mike Koller, Jr. of Fingal, George (Marilyn) Koller of Fingal and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Loibl on September 26, 2020; brother, James Loibl; parents, Frank and Mary Loibl; and father and mother-in-law, Mike Sr. and Mary Koller.
A memorial mass for Jerry will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fingal. Military honors will be done at that time and he will be buried in the spring at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery just north of Fingal.
