Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jul 2, 2013) — The Buffalo City Tourism Foundation Board is mulling over the idea of changing the name to Tour Jamestown.

On Tuesday’s (Jul 2, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Tourism Executive Director, Searle Swedlund said, the words “Buffalo City” doesn’t define the geographical area on Jamestown, North Dakota.

He added, with the world wide web searches Tour Jamestown would give a more global sense to the area.

He said a name change would also reference outdoor, and other activities available in the Jamestown area.

The Foundation Board continues to address marketing challenges, including how tourism has an impact on economic development.

Swedlund pointed out the the Foundation Board will meet on July 15, 2013 and will hear a presentation from two advertising agencies.

He noted the web site www.tourjamestown.com is being updated with information about tourism attraction in Jamestown and the area.

Swedlund said the upcoming drag races at Jamestown Regional Airport on July 27, 28 continues to grow each year, and also has a large economic impact on the Jamestown area. The Foundation Board recently approved a grant request to help buy a stager for the drag races.

Another tourism, economic impact on the area each year is the Ft. Seward Wagon Train.

Ramrod Delno Kleinknect says this year the wagon train attracted riders from 18 states and Germany.

MANDAREE, N.D. (AP) – The body of a man thought to have drowned on Lake Sakakawea (suh-kaw-kuh-WEE’-uh) on June 22 has been recovered.

The  body was found Saturday evening in the area of Skunk Creek Bay, roughly five miles south of the Pouch Point boat ramp. That’s the same general location where a Sidney, Mont., man was presumed to have drowned after falling out of a boat while fishing.

Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson says the 49-year-old man’s name is not being released pending an autopsy and positive identification.

Officials say the area where the man went into the water is known for large boulders on the lake bottom. Access to the area also has been hampered by muddy conditions.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A McIntosh County man charged with starving to death more than 100 cattle now also stands accused of making false statements to insurance agents.

Forty-four-year-old James Schnabel earlier this year pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of mistreating animals. He’s scheduled to stand trial in late August.

He now also is charged with a misdemeanor count of committing a fraudulent insurance act and a felony count of attempted theft. He’s due in court on the new charges July 22. His attorney did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment Tuesday.

Authorities allege that Schnabel submitted an insurance claim falsely stating that starved cattle had died after being chased by wild dogs.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some neighbors say a Canadian pipeline company’s attempt to muffle noise by planting trees around a pump station in southeast North Dakota isn’t working.

TransCanada finished a tree-planting project along the Keystone pipeline near Fort Ransom last month.

Bill Kiebke lives less than a mile from the pump station. He says the tree-planting project was a failure when it comes to quieting the four, 5,000-horsepower electric turbines at the site.

Kiebke’s son, Joe, says the trees planted on three sides of the pump station are now funneling noise directly at their home. He says it has created an amphitheater effect.

TransCanada spokesman Shawn Howard says facility is operating below permitted levels but the company will continue to work toward pacifying neighbors.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A University of North Dakota aviation student and a flight instructor have successfully completed a transcontinental air race for female pilots.

The school says student Amy Warbalow and instructor Katrina Kugler finished 18th out of the nearly 50 entrants in the 2,400-mile Air Race Classic. The UND team finished sixth out of the 13 collegiate teams.

Warbalow is from Minocqua, Wis., and Kugler from Yuma, Ariz. They were the first entrants from UND in the race from Pasco, Wash., to Fayetteville, Ark.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A billboard promoting North Dakota’s business climate that drew criticism in the Fargo-Moorhead area has been moved away from the North Dakota-Minnesota border.

The billboard is part of a Greater North Dakota Chamber campaign aimed at promoting North Dakota’s booming economy and encouraging Minnesota to improve its business climate. It went up in mid-May along Interstate 94 in Moorhead, Minn., which neighbors Fargo.

It read “North Dakota. Open for Business,” and it angered some officials on both sides of the border who thought it too confrontational.

The billboard has been moved down the interstate to a spot near Fergus Falls. The Greater North Dakota Chamber says the move was planned and had nothing to do with the bad reception in Fargo-Moorhead.

In world and national news…

CAIRO (AP) – Egypt’s state news agency says the military has drawn up a plan to suspend the Islamist-backed constitution, dissolve the Islamist-dominated legislature, and set up an interim administration. That’s what would happen if President Mohammed Morsi fails to reach a solution with his opponents. The agency’s report provides the first details of the road map the military has said it will implement if a deadline it set for Wednesday runs out with no solution.

BAGHDAD (AP) – More than 50 people are dead after a new wave of insurgent attacks in Iraq Tuesday. Most of the attacks involved car bombs in Shiite areas. Al-Qaida’s branch in Iraq frequently targets Shiites, security forces and civil servants in an effort to undermine the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. But there’s been no claim of responsibility for today’s attacks.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – The Taliban are again making it clear that they have no intention of ending the violence in Afghanistan, even though they have indicated they are willing to talk peace. Taliban attackers Tuesday set off a truck bomb and killed five security guards at a NATO supplier’s compound in the capital, Kabul. A Taliban spokesman says the attack “has no link to the peace process,” and that such attacks “will continue all over the country occupied by the foreigners.”

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) – Jury selection is set to start a week from today in the trial of Army Maj. Nidal Hasan. A military judge Tuesday entered a not-guilty plea for the Army psychiatrist after he refused to enter one himself in the deadly 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas. The charges include 13 counts of premeditated murder.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – A medical examiner has testified for prosecutors in Florida Tuesday that George Zimmerman’s injuries were insignificant. Valerie Rao took the witness stand after prosecutors played a video of an interview Zimmerman gave to conservative talk show host Sean Hannity last year. Rao says the injuries to Zimmerman’s head don’t reflect that his head was being slammed with great force into a sidewalk as he claims. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin. He is claiming self-defense. Prosecutors are trying to show Zimmerman’s life wasn’t in danger when he shot Martin.
