Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 13, 2012) — Stutsman County, through an agreement with Richland County, has contracted with CodeRED to allow anyone the opportunity to receive emergency notifications requiring immediate action and weather warnings for free.

Stutsman County Emergency Manager, Jerry Berguist says, currently, only residential landline phones in Stutsman County will receive emergency notifications from the County.

Any business line, cell phone line, VoIP phone line, email address, or text messaging capable phone needs to register for the service by logging onto the Stutsman County website at www.stutsmancounty.org

Once on the site, click the link to be directed to the secured “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page.

Required information to register includes first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, and phone numbers to be entered.

An exact address is needed due to the geographically based delivery system that CodeRED uses.

The registration page also allows users the opportunity to sign up to receive emergency weather warnings.

This is an opt-in service only.

Anyone wishing to use this service must register by opting in on the enrollment page, including residential landline phones.

Users have the option to receive alerts anytime the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, severe weather warning or flash flood warning for the address entered on the enrollment page.

Only users that are registered for the service will receive the message.

In addition, you will only be warned if you live in the warned polygon that the National Weather Service has issued a warning for.

A test of the CodeRED system will be initiated for all of Stutsman County Thursday, August 16, 2012 in the afternoon. (note change).

Normal text messaging rates apply to users who decide to opt in for the text messaging service.

If there are any questions regarding the system, please call Stutsman County Emergency Management at 701-252-9093.

STEELE, N.D. (AP) – A 50-year-old man has been arrested on
suspicion of starting a weekend fire that destroyed a popular motel
in the North Dakota town of Steele.
The man had not been charged as of late Monday afternoon.
The Lone Steer Motel in the town just off Interstate 94 about 40
miles east of Bismarck burned to the ground Sunday morning.

All of the two dozen people in the building got out safely.
Ssome people had to exit second-floor windows, make a short drop to another roof and then jump into the bed of a pickup truck parked next to the motel.
Most of the people staying there are with a construction crew
working in the area.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Authorities in the Fargo-Moorhead area
are dedicating a DUI crackdown to a family killed in a July wreck.
The Deutscher family urged an end to drinking and driving Monday and
called for stiffer penalties for offenders.
Allison Deutscher; her husband, Aaron Deutscher, and the
couple’s 18-month-old daughter, Brielle, were killed July 6 when a
pickup truck driven by 28-year-old Wyatt Klein, of Jamestown,
collided with the Deutschers’ SUV west of Jamestown. Klein, who
also died in the wreck, was driving the wrong way on Interstate 94.
Lynn Mickelson, Allison Deutscher’s father, says the accident
was 100 percent preventable.
Law enforcement agencies across the nation are taking part in
the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs Friday
through Labor Day weekend.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Republican North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple
is proposing $545 million in tax cuts and says the state should
play a greater role in funding education.
The plan that would be considered in the 2013 Legislature if
Dalrymple wins election includes cuts in property taxes, as well as
individual and corporate income taxes.

It expands the homestead tax credit for disabled and senior citizens.

Dalrymple wants a 50 percent reduction in the average school
district tax levy.

He says that would save the owner of a $180,000 home nearly $1,100 in property taxes.
Democratic state Sen. Ryan Taylor, who’s running against Dalrymple, says the governor is “reacting to issues long after hearing the public outcry.”
Taylor says he released his plan more than two months ago.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Favorable weather is helping the North
Dakota harvest progress, but pastures continue to remain stressed.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its weekly crop,
livestock and weather report that barley made it to 83 percent
harvested, Durum wheat reached 36 percent harvested, spring wheat
rose to 74 percent harvested and the oats crop is 79 percent
harvested.
Canola is 73 percent swathed, compared with 10 percent last year
and the average of 29 percent.
Pasture and range conditions are rated 13 percent very poor, 30
percent poor, 34 percent fair, 22 percent good and 1 percent
excellent.
Topsoil moisture supplies are rated 13 percent very short, 39
percent short, 47 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s agriculture commissioner
says his department is placing an additional 100 Japanese beetle
traps in and near nurseries that have purchased stock from a
Minnesota nursery stock supplier.
Last week, a Japanese beetle found in Grand Forks was positively
identified by the NDSU Extension Plant Pest Diagnostic Laboratory.
More specimens were later found in traps in West Fargo.
The beetles are believed to have hitched a ride from the
supplier.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A popular walking bridge that spans
Interstate 94 in the heart of North Dakota’s largest city is
getting a facelift.
The state Department of Transportation says it plans to fix up
the decaying structure in Fargo next summer, at a cost of $600,000.
Fargo resident Jen Hoy says  people know the crossing as the “blue bridge” and calls it a staple of the city.

Hoy has started a Facebook page to promote the project.
DOT spokesman Kevin Gorder says the bridge gets a lot of foot
traffic and needs work to keep it functioning.
The project will take a couple of months to complete and will
result in some lanes being shut down on I-94.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A financial research company says North
Dakota has 13 of the nation’s safest banks.
StreetAuthority LLC says it evaluated more than 7,300 banks
nationwide.

It used a tool that considers a bank’s reserves against
loan losses, and the number of loans it has that aren’t being
repaid.
The company says the tool has been used successfully to predict
bank failures.
The Farmers State Bank of Crosby is one of the North Dakota
banks on the list of the nation’s safest banks.

President Paul Hanisch says  the bank has few loan defaults. He chalks that
up to North Dakota values. He says: “It’s nice to have customers
that are honest, and we appreciate that.”
StreetAuthority identified 359 banks nationwide as the nation’s
safest.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The possible loss of a federal tax break for
the wind industry has some North Dakota officials nervous about the
future of 800 jobs.
DMI Industries in West Fargo employs 216 people making wind
towers. In Grand Forks, 630 people work at LM Wind Power, which
supplies components for wind turbines.
The federal wind production tax credit is equal to 2.2 cents per
kilowatt hour of electricity. Wind power becomes more expensive
without the credit.
Wind energy development in western North Dakota has slowed in recent months.
The state has almost 1,500 megawatts of wind energy generation
capacity, and more than 5,000 additional megawatts have been
proposed.
A North Dakota Public Service Commission engineer says electric
demand is down because of the sluggish national economy.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s early Canada goose hunting
season opens Wednesday.
The early season is aimed at reducing local numbers of Canada
geese.

The state Game and Fish Department says the statewide
population of the geese remains high despite liberalized
regulations the past several years including larger bag limits and
expanded shooting hours.
Limits for this year’s early season are 15 birds daily and 30 in
possession. Shooting hours are half an hour before sunrise until
sunset.
The season ends in the Missouri River zone on Sept. 7. It closes
in the rest of the state on Sept. 15.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department
is asking salmon anglers to turn over fish heads to the agency so
that tracking information can be retrieved from microscopic tags
embedded in the fish’s snouts.
The agency says anglers can tell whether a fish has a coded tag
by looking on its back.

If it’s missing the small adipose fin in front of the tail, the fish has a tag.
The agency says some young salmon were tagged before being
stocked in Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River.
Salmon can’t reproduce naturally in Lake Sakakawea, so eggs are
brought to the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and fish are
raised there for stocking.

way to go to get back to the level it was at a few years ago.

2006 through 2008. In the preseason opener, Minnesota allowed 260
yards rushing to the San Francisco 49ers.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) – Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says the
decision to release six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson wasn’t
based on any single incident and wasn’t made to send a message.
Philbin said the Dolphins simply decided the fit was wrong for both
the team and Johnson.

The Dolphins terminated Johnson’s contract Sunday night, about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife.

years affiliation with the Red Sox. Unofficially, he was the club’s
goodwill ambassador.

UNDATED (AP) – Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko has
cleared a battery of post-concussion tests and will resume physical

Jarrod Dyson during a close play.

He’s hitting .316 with 18 homers and 54 RBIs this season.

LONDON (AP) – The London Olympics may be over, but it’s not too
late to take home a souvenir — perhaps a used javelin, or a
national flag from the athletes’ parade.

Officials are putting hundreds of Olympic relics up for auction online. They include a Mary Poppins costume from the opening ceremony and a 1948 London Olympic torch, along with used equipment from the competitions
themselves.

In world and national news…

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) – Energy is the focus as both halves of the
Democratic and Republican tickets campaign today in some key
states.

President Barack Obama, on the second day of a bus trip
through Iowa, is expected to call on Congress to extend expiring
tax cuts for wind energy production.

Mitt Romney’s campaign says the Republican will address what he’s calling a “war on coal” waged by the White House. Romney will be in a coal-producing region of Ohio.

LONDON (AP) – The latest economic numbers from Europe show the
continent to be edging closer to recession.

The European Union’s statistics agency says European economies shrank by a quarterly rate of 0.2 percent in the second quarter of the year.

In the first quarter, output was flat.

Europe’s stumbling economy is making it harder for other economies around the world to recover.

CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) – More homes are threatened by fire near a
small town about 60 miles west of Seattle, where officials say

buildings.

KINGS BAY, Ga. (AP) – The military is investigating after two
skydivers missed an airport and landed on a high-security submarine
base along Georgia’s coast.

St. Marys Airport officials say they were told Sunday that the U.S. Navy had two skydivers in custody after they landed at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

The base is the East Coast hub for the Navy’s nuclear-missile armed submarines.
Base security officers released the jumpers after verifying their
identities.
