(UJ) The University of Jamestown softball team gave up just one run to Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University Tuesday afternoon at Trapper Field, defeating the Tigers 5-1 and 9-0 in a GPAC doubleheader.

UJ improves to 31-11 overall, 14-6 in the conference, and will close out the regular season by hosting No. 11 Morningside (Iowa) College on Saturday.

 

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the opener, as Alyssa Burke came home on a bunt by Haley Linke in the top of the third.

Mariah Wick (JR/Jamestown, N.D.) got things going for UJ in the bottom half, reaching on a one-out single and promptly stole second base. Morgan Geiszler (JR/Horace, N.D.) singled to put runners on the corners, and after Jenna Remenar (FR/Vancouver, Wash.) walked to load the bases, Wick came home on a wild pitch to make it 1-1. Kassi Ward (JR/Olympia, Wash.) also walked to once again load the bases, and following the second out of the inning, Santina Zito (SO/Boise, Idaho) lined a double to right center field. All three runners came home and the Jimmies led 4-1.

Remenar’s sacrifice fly scored Gentrey Turin (FR/Sandy, Ore.) an inning later to make it 5-1.

The five runs was more than enough to work with for Katie Merchant (SO/South Haven, Minn.) (12-6), who needed just 66 pitches to completefour five innings. She allowed one run while scattering six hits, striking out one. Kat Miska (JR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) worked the final two innings in relief.

Gracie Fisher (FR/Bemidji, Minn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate while Sydney Prussia (JR/Detroit Lakes, Minn.), Katie Reisdorfer (JR/Fresno, Calif.), and Megan Neiles (FR/Winnipeg, MB) also had hits.

In game two, Lucy Sinkkonen (FR/Cloquet, Minn.) blanked the Tigers in just her fourth start of the season and first at Trapper Field. She allowed just four hits over five innings to record her first career shutout. Sinkkonen threw just 56 pitches in five innings as UJ completed the sweep 9-0.

An RBI single by Santina Zito gave UJ a 1-0 lead in the first, and Gracie Fisher doubled home to more runs to stake the Jimmies to a 3-0 lead.

Mariah WIck drove in Steph Cota (SO/Tucson, Ariz.) with a single and Jenna Remenar doubled to plate Wick as UJ led 5-0 after two.

In the third inning, Zito and Alexa Geller (FR/Fort Collins, Colo.) executed a double steal to perfection as Zito scored to make it 6-0,

Jamestown wasn’t done scoring as Morgan Geiszler hit her eighth home run of the season leading off the bottom of the fourth, and Sydney Prussia connected on her fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot, extending the lead to 9-0.

Zito finished 2-for-3 as UJ needed just seven hits to score their nine runs.

UJ reached the 30-win plateau for the sixth straight season, not counting 2020 when only 19 games were played.
