Valley City  (VCPS)  City Public Schools Superintendent Josh Johnson has issued an updated statement.

He said “For the past two weeks, our school district has had between 3 to 8 active Covid-19 cases involving our students and staff. Because we do NOT want our students to be excluded (as close contacts) from school, activities, prom, and graduation, we believe it is important that we continue with the current mask protocols.

He said our planning for next fall is focused on returning to NORMAL operations/functioning within our school district. In addition to the elimination of masks and other protocols, we will be excited to welcome back parents and community members into our schools in ’21-22.

Johnson also said, Valley City Public Schools will be celebrating ALL EDUCATORS during the week of May 3-7. In addition to our outstanding teachers, we will recognize cooks, custodians, counselors, paraprofessionals, aides, administrative assistants, and others during this very special week. We welcome everyone to join us in celebrating all educators at Valley City Public Schools.

Jamestown  (Kiwanis Club)  The 2021  Pancake Day is 11 am to 7 pm Monday May 3, at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children, $24 for family and preschool and under are free. If purchased in advance, bulk tickets are available for as little as $4 per person.

With the help of the community, Jamestown Kiwanis has packaged more than 1 million meals for hungry families, rang bells for Salvation Army, supported student scholarships and delivered gifts to families in need at Christmas.

Kiwanis Club President, Searle Swedlund says, “Kids need Kiwanis, especially after the year of our pandemic. And Kiwanis needs the community’s support.”

To help finance its service projects, Jamestown Kiwanis holds its Pancake Day fundraiser once a year. The club raised about $9,500 in 2019. The club canceled Pancake Day in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Kiwanis Pancake Day Co-Chair, Toni Wegenast says, “Like other nonprofits and service clubs, Kiwanis’ canceled event left a void in the community. Now more than ever, we hope the community will support this cause and give back to organizations that really need it. Wegenast, Kiwanis Pancake Day is a great way to safely spend time with family and also support area nonprofits.”

She says, again this year, Hugo’s Family Marketplace is sponsoring the event. That means every dollar raised is returned to the community.

To ensure the safety of all guests, Kiwanis is limiting seating to 50% capacity and also offering an option for to-go meals.

Searle points out, “Our mission is kids,” Swedlund said. “Offering these COVID-friendly options ensures they all stay safe.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Firefighters are making progress on two large wildfires burning in western North Dakota. Authorities said Sunday that the Roosevelt Creek Fire in the Little Missouri National Grassland and a fire on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation together have burned nearly 19 square miles of remote terrain. No injuries have been reported. The Roosevelt Creek Fire on Sunday was 60% contained, up from 10% on Saturday. The blaze grew from 1,100 acres on Friday to 4,000 acres on Saturday, pushed by wind gusts of 35 mph. The Bismarck Tribune reports that the 8,000-acre fire burning about 10 miles south of Mandaree was 50% contained Sunday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A historic bridge in Bismarck that a nonprofit tried for years to save is now being targeted for removal. Friends of the Rail Bridge wants to stop BNSF Railway from demolishing the 138-year-old Bismarck-Mandan Rail Bridge spanning the Missouri River, the Bismarck Tribune reported on Saturday. The preservation group and railroad signed an agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard in January outlining paths to either keep or remove the bridge. The Coast Guard decides on projects proposed along that part of the Missouri River. The railroad, in a letter dated Thursday, asked the Coast Guard to shift its efforts from preserving the bridge to removing it.

NASCAR-KANSAS

Birthday Boy Busch takes Kansas double

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Busch celebrated his 36th birthday by winning a two-lap sprint to the finish at Kansas Speedway.

Busch had stalked Kyle Larson all day before beating him on a late restart to take the lead. Then, after another caution in the closing laps, Busch followed up his Truck Series win Saturday night with another trip to victory lane.

Busch is the 10th different winner through the first 11 races of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

Kevin Harvick overcame a tire mishap on a late pit stop and took advantage of some chaos on the final restart to finish second. Brad Keselowski dominated the early laps before following his win at Talladega last weekend by finishing third, and Matt DiBenedetto and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five.

PGA-VALSPAR CHAMPIONSHIP

Burns gets first PGA win

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Sam Burns finally won for the first time on the PGA Tour after twice failing to convert 54-hole leads.

Burns had two big birdies on the back nine that led to a 3-under 68 and a three-shot victory over Keegan Bradley. Burns got some help from Bradley hitting into the water on the 13th hole.

Bradley and Burns were tied through 36 holes and 54 holes, and they stayed that way through 12 holes on Sunday.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

Weir wins near Houston

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Former Masters champion Mike Weir earned his first PGA Tour Champions victory when he held steady with pars down the stretch for a 4-under 68 in the Insperity Invitational.

Weir and John Daly were tied going down the stretch at The Woodlands, which was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy rain earlier in the week.

Daly was posing over his 9-iron over the water to the 18th green when it came up a fraction short and splashed next to the bulkhead. He made double bogey for a 69 and had to settle for runner-up.
