The Valley City  Beautification Committee invites anyone to donate a tree to beautify the parks and the entire city. For more details contact the committee chairperson, Sharon Buhr, at 840-0973.

Valley City has been recognized as a Tree City USA for a number of years. The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America.  The communities that achieve this status meet four core standards of sound urban forestry management:  maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

One tree, an Autumn Splendor Buckeye, was donated by Jeff Moe, to remember his uncle, a long time resident, Lloyd Miller. Lloyd was very active member of the town, being involved in numerous organizations and on the Valley City Public School Board for 12 years.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota will issue more deer hunting licenses this year than it has in the past 10 years. The Game and Fish Department will make 72,000 licenses available to hunters, the sixth consecutive year the number has increased and up 3,150 from last year. The department has been moving toward a goal of issuing at least 75,000 licenses annually. The number issued this year might have been higher, but drought conditions persist across the state, affecting reproduction. The deadline to apply for a license is June 2. North Dakota’s 2021 deer gun season opens Nov. 5 at noon and continues through Nov. 21.

Box Score

FREMONT, Neb.  (UJ)  —The University of Jamestown softball team won twice on Wednesday to advance to the Midland bracket championship on Thursday, defeating Northwestern (Iowa) College 3-2 and Midland University 1-0.

In Wednesday’s first game, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jordyn Kramer doubled, and Madysn Grotewold bunted. Kat Miska (JR/Pequot Lakes, Minn.) fielded the ball but her throw was off-line, allowing Kramer to score and Grotewold to advance to second. Miska got out of the inning by striking out Payton Schwiesow.

UJ rallied in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Mariah Wick (JR/Jamestown, N.D.) reached on a one-out single and stole second base. Kassi Ward (JR/Olympia, Wash.) walked to put runners on first and second, and Jenna Remenar (FR/Vancouver, Wash.) followed with a double to left field, scoring Wick and moving Ward to third. Sydney Prussia (JR/Detroit Lakes, Minn.) singled to center with two outs to score Ward and Remenar.

Northwestern got one run back in the top of the sixth on Emily Strasser’s double, which made it 3-2.

Miska (17-2) struck out 12 while going the distance in the circle. She gave up two runs, just one of them earned, on four hits, and walked two.

Prussia and Wick each had two hits, and Wick stole a pair of bases.

Katie Merchant (SO/South Haven, Minn.) turned in perhaps her best outing as a Jimmie in Wednesday’s second game, holding Midland to a first-inning double over six shutout innings as Jamestown defeated the No. 25 Warriors 1-0.

Merchant (13-7) threw only 62 pitches in six innings, and faced just two batters over the minimum. She struck out four of the five final batters she faced before turning the game over to Kat Miska in the seventh. Miska set down the Warriors in order for her first save of the season.

Midland starter Aliyah Rincon (19-3) kept the Jimmies off the board until the top of the sixth. Jenna Remenar reached on an error, and Lauren Diemert (FR/West Fargo, N.D.) came on to run. Santina Zito (SO/Boise, Idaho) put down a sacrifice bunt to move Diemert into scoring position. Sydney Prussia delivered a single to right-center, scoring Diemert. Gracie Fisher (FR/Bemidji, Minn.) followed with a single to put Jimmie runners at first and second with one out, but Rincon retired the next two UJ batters to get out of the inning.

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Rangers weren’t too happy when Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson avoided a suspension for his role in Monday’s brawl at Madison Square Garden. Oshie’s first two goals came with Pavel Buchnevich (booch-NEH’-vihch) in the penalty box, two days after Buchnevich was crosschecked in the back by Wilson.

Wednesday’s game had six fights in the first period, commencing with a center-ice brawl right off the opening faceoff. Wilson was involved in a fight in the opening minute and received a 10-minute misconduct later in the period.

NHL-NEWS

Rangers dump Davidson, Gorton

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Rangers have stunningly fired president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton with three games left in the season. The dismissals come after Davidson and Gorton assembled an excellent collection of young talent that makes the team’s future look very promising.

The news also comes less than 24 hours after the team ripped the league for fining but not suspending Washington’s Tom Wilson for his role in a scrum Monday night that injured Rangers star Artemi Panarin (ahr-TEH’-mee pah-NAH’-rihn).

It was not immediately clear if the front office shakeup had any connection to the criticism of the league.

In other NHL news:

— Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (GAHS’-tihs-behr) has received a two-game suspension for boarding Penguins defenseman Mark Friedman during Pittsburgh’s 7-3 victory on Tuesday.

— The Devils have signed goaltender Nico Daws to a three-year, entry-level contract starting in the 2021-22 season. He was the team’s third-round pick in the 2020 draft.

UNDATED (AP) — The Major League Baseball season is barely a month old, and there already have been three no-hitters thrown, four if you include Madison Bumgarner’s seven-inning gem.

Baltimore Orioles ace John Means has authored the third while facing the minimum 27 batters in a 6-0 shutout of the Mariners in Seattle. The Mariners’ only baserunner reached first by striking out on a wild pitch that got away from catcher Pedro Severino, but the runner was thrown out at second.

Means struck out 12 and threw 79 of his 113 pitches for strikes.

Means lowered his ERA to 1.37 and became the first individual Orioles pitcher to toss a no-hitter since Jim Palmer in 1969.

Trey Mancini provided the big blow with a three-run shot off reliever Aaron Fletcher in the eighth inning.

Also on Wednesday’s major league schedule:

— The Yankees picked up their fifth straight win as Giancarlo Stanton homered and collected four RBIs in a 6-3 downing of the Astros. Stanton finished 3-for-4 with a walk and has 17 hits in his last six games, raising his batting average from .205 to .314.

In world and national news..

(AP)  President Joe Biden will push the case for his $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan in the reliably Republican state of Louisiana. Biden is directly challenging GOP lawmakers who say low taxes for corporations and the wealthy will fuel economic growth. A White House official says when Biden visits Louisiana on Thursday he will pose a basic question to voters about whether tax cuts for big companies and CEOs will make the country stronger than programs to bolster the middle class. The Democratic president plans to speak in the city of Lake Charles in front of a bridge that is 20 years past its designed lifespan.

(AP) French President Emmanuel Macron is joining the Biden administration in saying that he backs the sharing of the valuable technology behind COVID-19 vaccines. But Macro is also insisting that the immediate priority for wealthier countries should be first donating more doses to poorer countries. Speaking Thursday on a visit to a vaccine center, the French leader said he “completely” supports opening up intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines. But he also argued that even if patents are waived, pharmaceutical companies in places like Africa aren’t currently equipped to make COVID-19 vaccines. Macron says donations of doses should be prioritized instead.

BEIJING (AP) — China has rejected criticism of its human rights and economic record by foreign ministers of the Group of Seven major economies and accused them of meddling in its affairs. The Foreign Ministry also rejected an appeal by the G-7 diplomats for Taiwan, the island democracy Beijing claims as part of its territory, to be allowed to participate in the World Health Organization. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson says the statement Wednesday by G-7 diplomats in London made groundless accusations. The officials from the U.S., Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Canada said they were deeply concerned about Beijing’s treatment of Uyghur and other minorities.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are mixed on cautious optimism that upcoming company earnings reports will reflect a gradual recovery from the damage of the pandemic. European indexes fell in early trading Thursday while U.S. futures were little changed. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 finished higher in the first session after its Golden Week series of national holidays. Although the vaccine rollout is progressing slowly in Asia compared to the U.S. and Europe, the global recovery is raising hopes for improved exports and earnings of companies doing business overseas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — No. 3 House Republican Liz Cheney is clinging to her post as party leaders are lining up behind an heir apparent for her job. Former President Donald Trump issued a statement Wednesday giving his “COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement” to New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik. No. 2 House GOP leader Steve Scalise is also backing Stefanik.
