Bismarck  (CSi)   – Gov. Doug Burgum Monday joined ADM in announcing plans to build North Dakota’s first dedicated soybean crushing plant and refinery in Spiritwood, N.D. The $350 million crush and refining complex will create 70 permanent jobs and have the capacity to process up to 150,000 bushels of soybeans per day. It’s expected to be completed prior to the 2023 harvest, according to ADM.

Burgum says, “This soybean processing plant is a gamechanger for North Dakota farmers, adding value and expanding the market for this important crop closer to home while also supporting the production of products such as renewable green diesel right here in North Dakota.  Now, with innovative leader ADM and collaboration with local economic development and multiple state agencies, this exciting value-added project has come to fruition. We’re deeply grateful for ADM’s investment in our state and our highly productive farmers as well as the tireless efforts of so many who helped make this happen, including the Office of State Tax Commissioner, the Jamestown/Stutsman County Development Corp., North Dakota Department of Commerce, North Dakota Department of Agriculture, Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford, the state Legislature, and our entire congressional delegation.”

North Dakota was ranked ninth in the nation in soybean production in 2020, producing over 190 million bushels of soybeans, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Cass County was the nation’s top soybean producing county as recently as 2018, and Stutsman, Richland and Barnes also have ranked in the top 20 soybean-producing counties in recent years.

Senator John Hoeven says, the plans include redeveloping the former Cargill Malting plant for use in processing soybeans into oil and meal.

The initial announcement does not include a construction start date but anticipates completion in 2023.

He says, “We’re pleased that this new plant will be open in 2023, as it will provide a significant new market for North Dakota soybean growers, while creating good jobs and economic growth.  We appreciate the work of ADM, as well as the governor, the other members of the delegation and the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation for their efforts on this exciting new opportunity.”

Valley City  (Chamber 5-10-21)  On Monday, Valley City Mayor, Dave Carlsrud has issued a new weekly message to residents

Hi There,

We have certainly had a variety of weather here! In places like Arizona, weather has very little change, comparatively speaking, so we have many more opportunities conducive to discussing weather. Can you imagine how boring it is watching weather forecasts in those places?

It has been nice enough to be out enjoying the good air and some sun; I hope you have been out there.

Sue and I have been walking quite a bit, her more than me of course.  Anyway, there seems to be less litter and more drivers yielding right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks. Kudos to you who are helping.  You DO make a difference.

A request. Someone is continually throwing banana peelings on the west hospital boulevard ……. If it is you, will you please refrain from the practice? Thank you.

We have many amenities in Valley City, the Gaukler Wellness Center, swimming pool, libraries, parks, golf courses and great schools to name a few.  We are a smaller community and don’t have resources to be as independent as some may like. Perhaps partnering can help solve some of the challenges. Sue and I partner with our neighbors, sharing yard work, mechanical challenges and security. We are not very mechanical, but we can mow lawn for our neighbors and they help us with some mechanical projects. Take a little time to visit with your neighbors, you may be pleasantly surprised and find some partnering opportunities too.

Al LaFave, VCSU President; Josh Johnson, VCPS Superintendent; Bill Carlblom, Barnes County Commission Chairman and I as Mayor meet once per month to share needs and discuss ways in which we might utilize partnering.

Our Ministerial Association is another example of partnering. You get the idea. Larry Robinson says, “Let’s join hands, the answer is somewhere in the middle”.

Our City Employee Appreciation Night was held Friday evening. We are fortunate having the employees we do; they do great jobs for us. Thanks to each of you.

COVID-19 Vaccine is making a difference. Our CCHD has vaccine on hand and welcome walk-ins for vaccinations. To minimize your time, please call ahead, 845-8518. Having immunization is comforting.

MLB-METS-DEGROM

DeGrom on IL

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom will be placed on the injured list by the New York Mets with tightness in his right side. The move will keep the ace from taking the mound until May 20 at the earliest. The Mets say an MRI on Sunday night was “clean of any issues.”

The Major League Baseball team said Monday it was granted a waiver by the city to expand its ticket distribution at Nationals Park to up to 36% of capacity as of Friday. The Nationals currently are allowed 10,000 fans per game — about 25% of what their outdoor ballpark holds.

As of last month, the NHL’s Capitals and NBA’s Wizards have been allowed to host 10% of capacity at their indoor arena downtown, roughly 2,000 people. That will rise to 25%, about 5,000 spectators, on Friday.

In other outbreak related sports matters:

— The Philadelphia Flyers and Penn Medicine partnered to make the one-shot Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine available to fans before Monday night’s game. The Flyers said about 75 fans received a shot. They received vouchers for two tickets to a game and Gritty stickers and T-shirts incentives to get their shot.

— New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that Nassau Coliseum will have a fully vaccinated fan section when the New York Islanders open the Stanley Cup playoffs. Half of the arena will be used as a fully vaccinated fan section with attendees spaced approximately 3 feet apart with an unoccupied seat between each party. I

— The Nashville Predators have reached an agreement that will allow for a crowd of 12,135 inside Bridgestone Arena for home games played during the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs. The Predators will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, and all home games will see approximately 70% of the arena’s 17,159 seats filled.

NFL-TEBOW-JAGUARS

Tebow to play for Jaguars – as tight end

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer are apparently getting back together, this time in the NFL.

The NFL Network reports the former Florida star and 2007 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback is expected to team up with his college coach by signing a one-year contract to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The league-owned network says the deal “could be official in the next week or so.” The 33-year-old Tebow would be returning to the NFL after four years in the New York Mets’ organization and he’d be playing for Meyer for the first time since his senior year in 2009. This reunion would come with a twist: Tebow is switching to tight end.

In other NFL activity:

— Two people with direct knowledge have confirmed to The Associated Press the Indianapolis Colts have signed Eric Fisher to play left tackle. Kansas City selected Fisher with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft, but the Chiefs released their longtime starter in March. Fisher missed last season’s Super Bowl after tearing his Achilles tendon in the AFC championship game. The two-time Pro Bowler could replace Anthony Castonzo in Indy’s starting lineup. Castonzo retired in January.

MEDINA SPIRIT-PREAKNESS

First-place Derby finisher heads to Baltimore, without trainer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit is headed to Baltimore for the Preakness Stakes while trainer Bob Baffert says he won’t attend the race to avoid being a distraction in the wake of scrutiny following the colt’s failed postrace drug test.

Medina Spirit’s Derby win by half a length over Mandaloun gave Baffert his record seventh victory in the sport’s premier race. That milestone is now in jeopardy following Baffert’s announcement that test results revealed the horse had more than twice the state-allowed amount of the steroid betamethasone. Baffert is appealing the positive test and a part of the original sample will be re-tested.

PGA-BYRON NELSON-JOHNSON

Johnson withdraws from Nelson with knee discomfort

MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) — One week before the PGA Championship, Dustin Johnson is having knee pain. The world’s No. 1 player withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson on Monday.

He cites occasional discomfort in his knee and says his trainers have advised him to stay home and get healthy. Johnson had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after the 2019 season that caused him to miss three months. He says he was not happy about having to withdraw and pledged to return to Dallas. Johnson has gone six consecutive tournaments without a top-10 finish. That’s his longest such stretch since before his 2019 surgery.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has set a Wednesday vote for removing Rep. Liz Cheney from her No. 3 Republican leadership post. The California Republican sent a letter Monday to GOP lawmakers saying it was clear that he and his fellow Republicans “need to make a change.” McCarthy’s letter did not mention Cheney or former President Donald Trump by name. But the move comes after Cheney repeatedly challenged Trump’s false assertions pinning his November reelection defeat on widespread voting fraud and criticized Trump’s role in encouraging supporters’ Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Cheney seems all but certain to be tossed from her leadership job.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials are seeking to soothe concerns about price spikes or damage to the economy from last week’s cyberattack on a major fuel pipeline. Officials stress the fuel supply has not experienced widespread disruptions. The pipeline company says it’s working toward “substantially restoring operational service” by this weekend. The White House says it’s monitoring supply shortages in parts of the Southeast and President Joe Biden has directed federal agencies to bring their resources to bear. Colonial Pipeline delivers about 45% of the fuel consumed on the East Coast. The FBI says the criminal syndicate whose ransomware was used in the attack is named DarkSide, whose members are Russian speakers. Russia denies any involvement.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel has unleashed new airstrikes on Gaza, hitting the high-rise home of a Hamas field commander and two border tunnels dug by militants. Meanwhile, Hamas and other armed groups fired dozens of rockets toward Israel. The escalation early Tuesday was sparked by weeks of tensions in contested Jerusalem. Gaza health officials said that 24 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most by airstrikes, since cross-border fighting erupted. They said nine children were among the dead. The Israeli military said 15 of the dead were militants. During the same period, Gaza militants fired more than 250 rockets toward Israel, injuring six Israeli civilians. In a further sign of rising tensions, the Israeli military said it is sending troop reinforcements to the Gaza border.

MOSCOW (AP) — A gunman attacked a school in the Russian city of Kazan and Russian officials say eight people have been killed — seven students and a teacher. They also say 21 others have been hospitalized with wounds. Tatarstan Gov. Rustam Minnikhanov said four boys and three girls, all eighth graders, died in the shooting. Russian media said some students were able to escape the building during the attack, while others were trapped inside. The governor said the shooter was 19, has been arrested and a firearm was registered in his name. Authorities said additional security measures were put into place in all schools in Kazan, a city 700 kilometers (430 miles) east of Moscow.

(AP) The Biden administration is holding tens of thousands of asylum-seeking children in an opaque network of some 200 facilities. The Associated Press has learned that those facilities are spread across two dozen states and include five shelters with more than 1,000 children packed inside. Confidential data obtained by the AP shows that the number of migrant children in government custody has more than doubled in the past two months and that this week the federal government is housing around 21,000 kids, from toddlers to teens. A facility at U.S. Army post Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, had more than 4,500 children on Monday.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares have dropped in Europe and Asia after selling of several Big Tech companies dragged benchmarks on Wall Street lower. Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Hong Kong declined while Shanghai advanced after the Chinese government reported a moderate increase in producer prices. On Monday, the S&P 500 lost 1% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq gave back 2.5%. Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google’s parent company fell. Despite reassurances from the Federal Reserve and a much weaker than expected U.S. jobs reading last week, investors have refocused on the potential for surging prices to compel central banks to cut back on massive stimulus and raise ultra-low interest rates.
