FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fire has caused extensive damage at a strip mall in Fargo. Authorities say the three-alarm fire broke out in Bodyworks Physical Therapy Tuesday afternoon and spread to Gigi’s Playhouse which serves individuals with Down syndrome. Fire officials say a firewall between Gigi’s and another business slowed the fire from spreading further. Damage beyond the firewall was limited to a mechanical room. Authorities say the blaze burned through the roof at the two businesses and caused heavy water damage elsewhere. Crews from West Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota were also called to the fire. One firefighter suffered a minor injury, but no civilians were hurt.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The judge handling the case of a man accused of killing four people at a Mandan property management business has denied a request by more defense attorneys to quit the case. But Judge David Reich gave the attorneys more time to prepare by pushing trial back to August. Chad Isaak is accused of killing a co-owner and three employees of RJR Maintenance and Management in 2019. Robert Quick was allowed to withdraw as lead defense attorney after Isaak filed a disciplinary complaint against him. Several attorneys hired by Quick as secondary counsel also asked to withdraw on Monday. Reich rejected that, saying the attorneys should have expected they might take over the case because they entered their appearances as co-counsel.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The House chamber at the North Dakota Capitol will be used as a courtroom for a pair of high-profile criminal trials this spring, in part to ensure social distancing. The two trials had been scheduled in courthouses in Burleigh and Morton counties. The trial of two people charged in the death last year of a Bismarck man is scheduled to begin Monday. Separately, the trial for a man accused of killing four people at a Mandan business is set to begin June 7 at the Capitol.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A jury in Burleigh County will decide if a Moffit man charged in a fatal stabbing committed murder or was acting in self-defense. Forty-eight-year-old Arthur Funk is charged in the June 2020 death of 53-year-old Kevin Stockert, of Mandan. Prosecutors say the two men fought when Funk, who had been staying with Stockert’s girlfriend, failed to return her car. Prosecutor Chase Lingle says Stockert was stabbed numerous times, suffered a broken rib and was left to die with Funk making no attempt to call for medical help. Defense attorney Scott Rose told jurors that Funk was still in the driver’s seat of a car when he was punched by Stockert, the two struggled and Stockert had no other option but to defend himself.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — Police have made another arrest in the fatal shooting of a cab driver in Moorhead. A 17-year-old girl is accused of driving the car that was used when taxi driver 24-year-old Abdullahi Abdullahi was killed last week during an alleged armed robbery. The girl is being held in the West Central Juvenile Detention Center on possible charges of aiding and abetting three charges, including second-degree murder without intent. Eighteen-year-old Willie Sparkman Jr. is charged n Abdullahi’s death. A criminal complaint states investigators connected Sparkman and the 17-year-old to Abdullahi’s death via phone records.

NFL-FAVRE-REPAYMENT

Mississippi says it awaits $600K repayment from Brett Favre

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has yet to pay back $600,000 in money received from the state of Mississippi for multiple speaking events he never showed up for.

The former athlete had previously said he would pay the state after an audit revealed $1.1 million had been paid to Favre’s company, Favre Enterprises. Auditors said that was just a part of $94 million in welfare spending that was “questioned” in an audit last year, meaning auditors saw clear misspending or could not verify money was lawfully spent. Favre made an initial payment of $500,000 a year ago. He has not been accused of a crime.

Report: U. of Michigan missed chances to stop doctor’s abuse

The report has acknowledged Anderson’s abuse but hired the law firm for a comprehensive review. Some university officials at the time took no action despite being aware of complaints.

HORSE RACING-MEDINA SPIRIT-BAFFERT

Medina Spirit could run Preakness

BALTIMORE (AP) — Medina Spirit is set to run in the Preakness on Saturday to go for the second leg of the Triple Crown, as long as the Kentucky Derby winner passes a series of additional drug tests.

Maryland racing officials have reached an agreement with trainer Bob Baffert to allow Medina Spirit and his other horses to enter races this weekend at Pimlico Race Course subject to extra testing and monitoring.

Baffert says Medina Spirit was treated with an antifungal ointment containing the steroid betamethasone that may have caused the horse to fail a postrace drug test.

Baffert says Medina Spirit was treated with the ointment for dermatitis once a day leading up to the race and that experts have told him this could explain the test results. Baffert says the horse tested positive for 21 picograms of the substance, which would lead to a disqualification if upheld with another test.

In world and national news…

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Rockets streamed out of Gaza and Israel pounded the territory with airstrikes. The most severe outbreak of violence since the 2014 war took on many hallmarks of that devastating 50-day conflict, with no endgame in sight. Gaza’s Hamas rulers and other militant groups have fired barrages of hundreds of rockets that at times have overwhelmed Israel’s missile defenses, causing air raid sirens and explosions to echo across Tel Aviv and other cities. Israeli airstrikes have leveled two multistory apartment towers in the Gaza Strip, where 2 million Palestinians have lived under a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade since Hamas took power in 2007.
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that an independent public inquiry into the handling of the coronavirus pandemic will be held next year. He told lawmakers Wednesday that the inquiry will have wide-ranging statutory powers and that the government has a responsibility to learn lessons from the pandemic. Families of those who have died during the pandemic have been calling on Johnson to call an inquiry since last summer, but the prime minister consistently said the time wasn’t right. The U.K. has recorded Europe’s highest virus-related death toll with more than 127,500 people dead.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two senior Trump administration officials plan to defend their actions during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol when they appear before Congress. Former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller plans to say he stands behind every decision he made that day. In prepared testimony obtained by The Associated Press, Miller says he was concerned before the insurrection that sending troops to the building could fan fears of a military coup and cause a repeat of the Vietnam-era shootings at Kent State that killed four students. Former acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen will also testify before the House Oversight Committee.
