BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say one person has died in an apartment fire in Bismarck. Firefighters responded to a multi-family apartment building about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday and found heavy smoke and fire coming from a second-floor balcony. Crews began working the fire from the outside, then entered the building to attack it and found an unresponsive person in the apartment where the fire was believed to have started. The victim was pulled from the apartment and was treated by an ambulance crew, but died at the scene. Other tenants evacuated safely, but some residents have been temporarily displaced by the fire damage.

The redistricting plan is one of a dozen mandatory studies from legislation passed before adjournment. Another 72 studies are considered optional.

His daughter, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, said that throughout his life her father was “a champion of those on the outside” and used his words to stand up for people. In her bid for president, Klobuchar talked often about her father’s public struggles with alcoholism and how he helped others by sharing his story. Jim Klobuchar worked as a reporter in Bismarck, North Dakota and for The Associated Press in Minnesota before getting a sports writing job for what is now the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 1961. Virus-depleted Padres add Myers to IL

UNDATED (AP) — The virus-depleted San Diego Padres have made a series of moves to prop up a lineup that is missing outfielder Wil Myers and shortstop Fernando Tatis (tah-TEES’) Jr. after they tested positive for the coronavirus.

Myers was added to the injured list Wednesday. Joining him was first baseman Eric Hosmer, who is out for contact tracing. To take their place, the Padres recalled utilityman Brian O’Grady from Triple-A El Paso and selected the contract of outfielder Patrick Kivlehan.

In other MLB news:

— The Diamondbacks have placed starting pitcher Zac Gallen and first baseman Christian Walker on the 10-day injured list. Gallen has a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament, which is the ligament replaced in Tommy John surgery. Walker has a sore right oblique, an injury similar to the one that put him on the IL earlier this season.

— Yankees shortstop Gleyber (GLAY’-bur) Torres was kept out of Wednesday night’s starting lineup at Tampa Bay as a precaution as the number of confirmed positive COVID-19 tests among the team’s coaching and support staff reached seven. Manager Aaron Boone said he hoped to have an update on Torres after the game.

— Dodgers backup third baseman Edwin Ríos will miss the rest of the season after surgery on his right shoulder. Los Angeles also shut down top pitching prospect Josiah Gray due to a right shoulder impingement.

— Braves right-hander Mike Soroka has experienced a setback in his recovery from surgery to repair his torn right Achilles tendon. He will have a follow-up procedure next week.

— Brewers ace Corbin Burnes says he tested positive for the coronavirus last month but remained asymptomatic throughout his stint on the injured list. Burnes is expected to start Thursday against the Cardinals in his first appearance since April 26.

NHL…

— Ville Husso (VIH’-lee HOO’-soh) stopped 31 shots for his first career shutout and David Perron had a goal and two assists in the Blues’ 4-0 victory over the Wild on Wednesday night. Rangers fire Quinn, 3 assistants

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Rangers’ house cleaning has continued with the firing of head coach David Quinn and three assistants.

The move is the first major one from new general manager Chris Drury, who took over last week after the organization fired popular president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton.

In three years, Quinn posted a 96-87-25 record in rebuilding the Rangers with a much younger team that included No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere (lah-frehn-YEHR’) this past season. The Blueshirts remained in the postseason picture this year until back-to-back losses to the Islanders ignited a five-game skid.

In other NHL news:

— Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams disputes there is a disconnect between the team and Jack Eichel (EYE’-kul) on how to treat a herniated disk that has sidelined the captain since March. Adams says both sides have been in constant communication in regard to the injury and had agreed to wait until early June to determine how to proceed. Adams says Eichel has not requested a trade.

— The expansion Seattle Kraken signed the first player in franchise history today after agreeing to terms with free agent center Luke Henman on a three-year entry level contract. The 21-year-old currently plays for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the Québec Major Junior Hockey League.

NFL…

— Former Vikings head coach Jerry Burns has died at 94, according to the team. Burns became Minnesota’s head coach in 1986 and compiled a 55-46 record, including 3-3 in the postseason. He helped the Packers win the first two Super Bowls as defensive backs coach, then joined iconic Vikings coach Bud Grant as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator in 1968.

NFL-2021 SCHEDULE

Bucs to kick off season vs Cowboys

UNDATED (AP) — Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will begin their Super Bowl title defense when they kick off the 2021 season against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 9.

The game could see the return of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5 of last season. The Cowboys have missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Other highlights from opening weekend include Matthew Stafford playing his first game for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night against the Chicago Bears with SoFi Stadium welcoming fans for the first time.

Most teams are expected to be at full capacity following a season played before limited crowds because of COVID-19.

The Las Vegas Raiders host the Baltimore Ravens in the first Monday night game.

The NFL also announced it will return to London in October for its first games in the city since the outbreak of the coronavirus. The Atlanta Falcons will play the New York Jets on Oct. 10, and the Jacksonville Jaguars face the Miami Dolphins a week later. The NFL says it is ready to return to London following a successful rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in Britain.

In world and national news…

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Some of the countries that were most praised last year for controlling the coronavirus are lagging far behind in getting their populations vaccinated. And some, especially in Asia, are seeing COVID-19 cases grow. In Japan, South Korea and New Zealand, vaccination rates are languishing in the single figures. Not only do those three countries rank worst among all developed nations in vaccinating their people against COVID-19, they also rank below many developing countries, such as Brazil and India. Australia is also performing comparatively poorly. That compares to the U.S., where nearly half of all people have gotten at least one shot, and Britain and Israel, where rates are even higher.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Weary Palestinians are somberly marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as Hamas and Israel traded more rockets and airstrikes and Jewish-Arab violence raged across Israel. The violence has reached deeper into Israel than at any time since the 2000 Palestinian intifada, or uprising. Intense fighting between Israel and Hamas has echoed their devastating 2014 war. That conflict and two others were largely confined to the impoverished and blockaded Palestinian territory and Israeli communities on the frontier. But this round seems to be rippling far and wide, tearing apart the country at its seams.

CLEMMONS, N.C. (AP) — The cybersecurity attack on the Colonial Pipeline has stricken fear and stress into the lives of people in the Southeastern U.S. who have been waiting in long lines amid distribution problems and panic-buying. The company said it initiated the restart of pipeline operations late Wednesday. But it will take several days for deliveries to return to normal. The situation forced some people to face the prospect of lost wages and missed doctors appointments. Restaurants and bars may be particularly squeezed since some workers may not be able to come to work and some customers may abandon plans to eat out.

PANAMA CITY (AP) — An earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 struck Thursday in waters off the south coast of Panama, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was recorded around 9:42 GMT Thursday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) under the northern Pacific Ocean, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Punta de Burica, Panama. The USGS said little or no population was exposed to the quake. No tsunami warning has been issued and no other details were immediately available.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say reports of sexual assaults across the military increased by a very small amount in 2020. In that year troops were largely locked down for months as bases around the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials familiar with the data say sexual assault reports went up by about 1%, compared with the 2019 totals. They say the Army and Marine Corps saw slight increases in the number of reports, while the Navy and Air Force saw small decreases. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss data not yet made public.

ANNAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has approved a $577 million settlement in a lawsuit over underfunding at Maryland’s four historically Black colleges and universities. The deal approved Wednesday will provide $555 million in extra funding over 10 years, beginning in 2023, for Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University in Baltimore and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. Another $22 million will pay the legal costs of the plaintiffs who spent 15 years in court pursuing these claims. The lawsuit accused Maryland of underfunding the institutions while developing programs at traditionally white schools that directly competed with them, draining away prospective students.
