From St. John’s Academy Principal, Jeff Trumbauer

Jamestown  (SJA) St. James Basilica  and St. John’s Academy have announced the Academy will offer middle school education beginning in the fall of 2021.

Originally a boarding school, St. John’s Academy opened in 1890 and offered education through high school for 75 years until the closure of the middle and high school after the 1965-66 school year. The school will resume offering Catholic Christian middle school education beginning in the fall of 2021 with the addition of seventh grade and with eighth grade in the fall of 2022.

A proposal was approved by the Academy’s school board, the Basilica of St. James Parish Finance Council and future pastor the Rev. Neil Pfeifer.

Pfeifer says,  “Adding seventh and eighth grade was a part of the vision that Monsignor (Jeffrey) Wald had for this parish and for St. John’s Academy.  Furthermore, it supports the mission of the Basilica of St. James and Academy.”

The decision comes with the encouragement and support of the Bishop John T. Folda of the Fargo Diocese, who holds a deep belief in the importance and value of Catholic-Christian education.

Folda says,  “I’m very pleased that St. John’s Academy will add seventh and eighth grades in the next two years.  This will be a great blessing for our students and their families, who already trust St. John’s to pass on an excellent education and formation in the Catholic faith.”

Pfeifer noted that since 1890, the mission of St. John’s Academy has been to educate and spiritually form the children of the community through “rigorous academics built on the firm foundation of Catholic-Christian faith.”

He adds, The decision to proceed with adding grades 7-8 was made with a “firm belief that education within a Catholic-Christian school is both valuable and necessary for passing on the faith to the next generation. In other words, it is impossible to educate a child fully and properly without bringing Christ into the conversation.

St. John’s Academy Principal Jeff Trumbauer said educating middle school students at the Academy will not only enhance the academic experience for children will greatly contribute to the formation and development of the whole child.

He says, “The ability to present Christ to middle school children during their formative years is very important.  We understand that there will be challenges to face, but through Christ all things are possible, and it is in him we put our faith. We are excited to offer this incredible, faith-based education that has become the standard at St. John’s Academy to seventh and eighth grade students. We appreciate the input and support of our stakeholders and ask for the prayers of this community as we embark on the next chapter at St. John’s Academy.”

Bismarck  (CSi)  The North Dakota Department of Health  (NDDOH) released the following statement Monday regarding the new mask guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

NDDOH State Health Officer, Dr. Nizar Wehbi, says, “The CDC has announced that fully vaccinated individuals can resume activities without wearing a mask indoors and outdoors. Therefore, we, at the Department of Health, are aligning with the CDC recommendation,” said

Studies have shown that vaccines are highly effective against symptomatic disease and hospitalization in the general adult populations. In North Dakota, 99.9% of those vaccinated are protected from COVID. Less than 0.13% of those fully vaccinated have contracted COVID-19.

NDDoH Chief of Disease Control and Forensic Pathology Section, Kirby Kruger, says, “Breakthrough cases will continue to be seen, but as we have learned from experience with historical vaccines such as polio and varicella (chickenpox), the spread is greatly diminished in communities as more people participate in vaccination efforts.   According to the CDC, vaccines for chickenpox are between 88%-98% effective. COVID-19 vaccines have very high level of effectiveness. This is encouraging news. North Dakotans are slowing and can stop the spread of COVID-19 by continued and expanded participation in vaccination efforts.”

The decision not to recommend masks for those who have been vaccinated is based on the latest research, showing that the vaccines are working and are highly effective. The risk of being infected or spreading COVID-19 once fully vaccinated is very low, and therefore wearing a mask if you are fully vaccinated is no longer a recommendation.

Individuals are considered fully vaccinated two (2) weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or two (2) weeks after a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

A recommendation remains that everyone wears masks when they are in a health care setting, when they are traveling on public transportation, including airplanes, and when they are in a business or employer that chooses to require masks. Also, vaccinated people who have weakened immune systems should consult with their physician to determine the best course of action for them.

Wehbi adds, “North Dakotans have come together throughout this pandemic to keep our communities safe, first through mitigation and now through vaccination.  Wehbi. More than 50% of adults in the state have already been vaccinated and this number continues to grow. We are grateful for all the hard work and sacrifices made to get us to this point.”

Guidance for individuals and businesses is being updated on the NDDoH website to reflect these recommendations from the CDC.

The NDDOH is working with regional local public health and medical providers to expand access to vaccines. Vaccine information and locations can be found online at www.health.nd.gov/together

Bismarck (CSi)   – Gov. Doug Burgum Monday thanked Terry Steinwand Director North Dakota Game and Fish Department for his more than 15 years of transformational leadership of the agency, after Steinwand announced his retirement effective July 31.

Steinwand was first appointed Game and Fish director on Jan. 1, 2006, by then-Gov. John Hoeven. He was reappointed by Gov. Jack Dalrymple in 2010 and by Burgum in December 2016. Steinwand began his career with the agency in 1982 as a fisheries biologist for the Garrison Diversion Unit. He was named fisheries division chief in 1989.

“Terry has been a champion for North Dakota hunters and anglers for nearly four decades, spending the last 15 of those years leading a high performing team that has earned North Dakota a national reputation as a sportsman’s paradise,” Burgum said. “From expanding hunting access through the PLOTS (Private Land Open to Sportsman) program to growing the state’s fishing opportunities to more than 400 managed waters with a world-class stocking program, Terry’s love and respect for the outdoors shines through in his work every day. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and legacy of responsible, effective management of our state’s fish and wildlife resources, and we wish him all the best in retirement.”

“I’ve been blessed with a tremendous personal and professional family, and the decision to retire was not an easy one, but it’s time to spend more time with family and hunting or fishing,” Steinwand said. “ I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great people and some great governors, and I couldn’t ask for a better organization or group of people to work with than the ones I’ve had over the last 39 years. And there’s no better place to be than North Dakota.”

Under Steinwand’s leadership, the Game and Fish Department also has embraced technology to offer online options for many of its services. Most recently, the department supported the Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 2144, making North Dakota the first state in the nation to allow electronic posting of private land.

A national search will be conducted for a new Game and Fish director.

MLB…

— Nick Madrigal had three hits, including his first major league homer, and Danny Mendick launched his first career grand slam as the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 16-4. Seven players had multiple hits for Chicago, which posted season highs in runs and hits, with 18. Dallas Keuchel was the beneficiary, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. J.A. Happ was roughed up again by the White Sox.

— Pinch-hitter James McCann drove in the game’s first run with a double, Tomás Nido had three hits and the New York Mets overcame more injuries to beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1. With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Mets right fielder Kevin Pillar was hit square in the nose by a 95-mph pitch from Jacob Webb. Pillar was knocked to the ground, and blood poured from his nose when he lifted his head.

UNDATED (AP) — Logan Webb pitched six shutout innings and the San Francisco Giants backed him with three home runs, beating the Cincinnati Reds 6-3.

Wilmer Flores, Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón homered for the NL West-leading Giants. Webb gave up six hits, struck out four and walked a batter.

The Reds left the bases loaded in the second inning, but Webb didn’t allow a runner past second for the rest of his outing and induced a pair of double-play balls. Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suárez hit back-to-back homers for the Reds in the eighth.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Yu Darvish struck out 10 in seven brilliant innings and also doubled and scored, and Manny Machado hit a two-run homer for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Colorado Rockies 7-0 for their fourth straight win. The Padres are 6-1 since last Tuesday, when star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for the coronavirus before a game at Colorado and right fielder Wil Myers and first baseman Eric Hosmer were pulled from the game. A positive test was returned for Myers while Hosmer was put in the contact tracing protocol.

— Albert Pujols delivered an RBI single in his Dodgers debut, and Walker Buehler pitched seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Los Angeles’ 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pujols went 1 for 4 while playing first base and batting cleanup for the defending World Series champions, who formally signed the 10-time All-Star on Monday after the Los Angeles Angels cut him earlier this month. Eduardo Escobar had an RBI single in the eighth for Arizona, which opened a four-game series at Chavez Ravine with its fifth loss in six games. Buehler dominated Arizona except one wild stretch in the fourth.

— Eric Haase hit two home runs, Casey Mize took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1. The Tigers, who began the day 12 games under .500, have won six of eight. Seattle’s three-game winning streak ended. Mize allowed just three hits and permitted only two runners past first base in a career-high 7 2/3 innings. It was his second straight win and fourth consecutive quality start. Mize, the 24-year-old centerpiece of Detroit’s rebuild and the overall No. 1 pick in the 2018, struck out seven — that matched his career high, set in his debut last year.

— Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 13th home run and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the slumping Cleveland Indians 7-4 after star outfielder Mike Trout was injured early. Trout strained his right calf in the first inning. The three-time AL MVP was limping after running to third on an inning-ending popup. Ohtani drove Sam Hentges’ fastball into the seats in right-center during a five-run second to give the Angels a 6-1 lead. The Japanese superstar, who hit the go-ahead homer with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday at Boston, has gone deep in consecutive games twice this season.

— Adolis Garcia and Willie Calhoun homered as the Texas Rangers ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees. Texas denied Gerrit Cole’s bid to become the American League’s first six-game winner. Rangers right-hander Jordan Lyles fanned six in six innings to win for the first time in his last eight starts.

— Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward and Javier Báez homered off Jon Lester in his return to Chicago, and the Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 7-3. Lester and Kyle Schwarber, two key members of Chicago’s 2016 World Series championship team, heard loud cheers all night long in their first game against their former team.

MLB-NEWS

Dodgers sign Pujols; Yanks’ Stanton to IL

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Albert Pujols has signed a major league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 41-year-old slugger is moving 30 miles north to extend his remarkable career with the defending World Series champions after leaving the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols was unceremoniously cut by the Angels earlier this month in an abrupt end to his largely unsuccessful 10-year, $240 million tenure with the Orange County club.

In other MLB news:

— The New York Mets have placed outfielder Michael Conforto and second baseman Jeff McNeil on the 10-day injured list with hamstring injuries. Conforto strained his right hamstring and McNeil strained his left hamstring in Sunday’s 7-1 loss at Tampa Bay. Mets manager Luis Rojas says the team is “taking a week to week approach” with the two players.

— New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain. Stanton missed all three games in their weekend series at Baltimore. Stanton is hitting .282 with nine homers and 24 RBIs in 33 games this season. He is 3 for 25 since homering in three consecutive games May 4-6.

— The Houston Astros will allow maximum attendance starting May 25. The Boston Red Sox announced earlier Monday that they will fill Fenway Park to capacity as of May 29, making them one of the first teams in major league baseball to play to a full house. The Texas Rangers played to 100% capacity for opening day, and the Atlanta Braves on May 7 were the first MLB team to go to full capacity full-time.

NHL ..

UNDATED (AP) — Brad Marchand scored 39 seconds into overtime and the Boston Bruins rallied to beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 and even the East Division first-round series at a game apiece.

Marchand was Boston’s OT hero in a game in which he made more noise for taking post-whistle penalties than producing. The Bruins’ leading scorer, who ranked third in the NHL in points, looked more like himself on the one-timer he ripped past Craig Anderson in overtime. Taylor Hall tied it with 2:49 left in regulation for the Bruins. Game 3 is Wednesday night in Boston.

In other NHL playoff action:

— Nathan MacKinnon scored the tiebreaking goal 30 seconds into the third period and later added an empty-netter, Philipp Grubauer stopped 22 shots and the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 4-1 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Gabriel Landeskog also added a third-period goal by tipping in a blue-line blast from MacKinnon. Cale Makar got things started with a power-play goal in the first period. Game 2 is Wednesday. Jordan Kyrou scored his first postseason goal for a Blues team missing leading scorer David Perron, who’s out due to the NHL’s virus protocols.

— Jordan Staal scored twice and Nino Niederreiter beat Juuse Saros for the go-ahead goal early in the third period, helping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators in the first game of the teams’ first-round playoff series. Niederreiter hammered the puck past Saros from between the circles at 2:26 of the third. Staal followed midway through the third by corralling a loose puck and beating Saros. Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for Carolina. Filip Forsberg and Erik Haula scored for Nashville. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Wednesday.

NFL NEWS

Packers sign QB

UNDATED (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed Kurt Benkert in their latest attempt to add quarterback depth while MVP Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team remains unclear.

Green Bay has signed both Benkert and former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Blake Bortles over the past week. Rodgers and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love had been the only quarterbacks on the Packers’ roster. The 25-year-old Benkert has never appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

In other NFL news:

— The Patriots have signed veteran offensive linemen James Ferentz and Alex Redmond. Ferentz returns to New England, where he’s appeared in 24 games over the past four seasons. The 31-year-old also previously spent two seasons in Denver and one in Houston. Redmond was signed by Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent in 2017. The 26-year-old has played mostly at right guard and has appeared in 32 games for the Bengals since then, including 24 starts.

— The Philadelphia Eagles and four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Ryan Kerrigan have agreed on a one-year contract. The 32-year-old Kerrigan played 10 seasons in Washington and is the franchise’s all-time leader with 95 1/2 sacks. — The Indianapolis Colts’ career sacks leader, Robert Mathis, will be inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor later this year. The ceremony will take place at halftime of its Nov. 28 game against Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay. Mathis was supposed to become the 17th honoree last season but the induction was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

— The Jacksonville Jaguars signed sixth-round draft pick Jalen Camp on Monday and waived third-year running back Ryquell Armstead. Armstead spent all of last season on the COVID-19 list.. Armstead became expendable after the emergence of running back James Robinson in 2020. Under the NFL’s rookie slotting system, Camp’s four-year deal is worth about $3.64 million.

OHIO STATE-TEAM DOCTOR

Dozens more men sue Ohio State over doc’s sexual misconduct

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dozens more men are suing Ohio State over the university’s failure to stop sexual abuse and misconduct decades ago by team doctor Richard Strauss.

They echo claims filed previously by over 400 men, many of whom allege they were groped during medical exams. The newest claims were filed in federal court ahead of Monday, which marked two years since OSU released a law firm report that concluded university employees knew of concerns about Strauss but didn’t stop him. Strauss died in 2005.

The school has publicly apologized and promised a “monetary resolution” for survivors. It already reached nearly $47 million in settlements for 185 plaintiffs.

UNDATED (AP) — Bob Baffert has been temporarily suspended from entering horses at New York racetracks pending an investigation of the failed drug test by Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit.

Baffert’s ban in New York includes races at Belmont Park with the Belmont Stakes being run on June 5. The New York Racing Association made the announcement Monday. Baffert had not committed to entering any horses in the third leg of the Triple Crown but had many in consideration for other races on Belmont Stakes day.

Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for the steroid betamethasone in post-race testing and faces disqualification unless a second test comes back negative. Medina Spirit finished third in the Preakness on Saturday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police say that threats to members of Congress have more than doubled this year. And many members say they now fear for their personal safety more than they did before the siege of the Capitol by then-President Donald Trump’s supporters on Jan. 6. Several lawmakers say they have boosted security measures to protect themselves and their families, money for which will be part of a broad $1.9 billion spending bill that the House will vote on this week. A separate measure would create a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territories are on strike in a rare collective action against Israel’s policies. The move came Tuesday as Israeli strikes rained down on Gaza and militants fired dozens of rockets from the Hamas-ruled territory. With the war in Gaza showing no sign of abating and truce efforts apparently stalled, the general strike and expected protests could again widen the conflict after a spasm of communal violence in Israel and protests across the occupied West Bank last week. Heavy fighting broke out May 10 when Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers fired long-range rockets toward Jerusalem. Since then, at least 213 Palestinians have been killed in heavy Israeli airstrikes, and 10 people in Israel have been killed in ongoing rocket attacks from Gaza.

BERLIN (AP) — A report by the International Energy Agency says immediate action is needed to reshape the world’s energy sector in order to meet ambitious climate goals by 2050. This includes ending investments in new coal mines, oil and gas wells. The Paris-based agency said in a report Tuesday that there is a narrow but viable pathway for building a global energy sector with net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Several countries, including the United States and the European Union, have pledged to stop releasing more planet-warming gas into the atmosphere than can be absorbed by mid-century. The IEA report sets out 400 steps needed to transform how energy is produced, transported and used.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some companies are looking to President Joe Biden’s giant infrastructure proposal to help transform the automotive sector as electric vehicles shift from a luxury niche to mainstream America. Biden’s plan reflects an effort to accelerate certain sectors of the economy with the belief they’ll become the engines for growth in the decades to come. In Georgia, school bus-maker Blue Bird has visions of going from selling a few hundred electric buses a year to 15,000. In Michigan, Ford plans to produce an all-electric version of its F-150 pickup truck. Biden will visit Ford’s electric vehicle center in Michigan on Tuesday.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares have advanced as investors snap up bargains after recent sell-offs spurred by a worsening of the pandemic in some countries. Benchmarks in France, Germany and Britain rose in early Tuesday trading. Indexes finished higher in Japan, Australia, South Korea and China. Regional markets shrugged off data showing Japan’s economy contracted at 5.1% annual pace in the last quarter amid government “emergency” measures for the coronavirus pandemic that curtailed economic activity. Although Asia has fared better in curbing COVID-19 infections than some nations, worries are growing about a recent surge in infections and deaths.
